Many of us spent our childhood years tracking down the fictional thieving villain known as Carmen Sandiego across the world. But in Netflix’s upcoming animated series based on the beloved franchise, the streaming service is interested in answering another question: “Who is Carmen Sandiego?”

Premiering this month, Netflix’s animated educational series offers us a peek into Carmen Sandiego’s past, but also slightly reboots what we did know about the red-coated thief. The educational video game franchise originally painted Carmen Sandiego as the ringleader of the criminal organization, V.I.L.E., which players traveled the globe to track down. Netflix’s show, however, instead sets her up as a thief who only steals from other thieves in an effort to stop V.I.L.E.

A master thief who uses her skills for good, Carmen Sandiego travels the world foiling V.I.L.E.'s evil plans -- with help from her savvy sidekicks.

Carmen Sandiego will premiere on Netflix on January 18. Gina Rodriguez (Jane The Virgin) will star as Carmen while Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) portrays Player, a role usually assumed by the person who would play the game. As a reminder, Netflix is also planning a live-action adaptation of Carmen Sandiego, which will see Gina Rodriguez return to the role.

They made her good? Why?!

@TruePunishment - Didn’t she always feel as not much of a malicious bad guy?

Throughout all the games, the TV game show, the other cartoon..she never really struck me as evil.

@IronGenesis - no, she was a master thief. She didn't use her skill for good. She stole monuments and priceless artifacts, while taunting her opponents. She did give due credit when caught, but she was no hero.

@WAKANDABATMANFOREVER - Those are some nice fan art pieces. I recognize Paul Hosteter's style in the second one. (Who's Paulson?)

Looks fun, but being called Diego it annoys me how the singer promounces Sandiego, either way it gives me Kim Possible vibes

@AndrewHolland - Got a similar vibe. Didn't like She Ra, but this looks like something that I might like

So are they completely forgetting that this was supposed to be educational? I didnt see anything about this teaching you about geography or anything. Looks more like they're just trying to make carmen sandiego into another female superhero.

@Origame - Really most kids arent going to watch it anyway, so no point of making it educational , just tell a good story and you'll get the people who grew up on the original show, and maybe some older kids

@dracula - but you arent gonna get the people who grew up on the original. Because people who watched the original probably watched it because they liked what they were learning. This was always an educational series, going back to even the first appearance with the video game and the game show. Both of those were all about geography. THE NAME OF THE SHOW IS EVEN MEANT TO BE A GEOGRAPHY QUESTION!

Ugh.
Lame. Why not just call it something else if you're not being true to what it is? Oh yeah, money.
Also, I thought a live action Carmen should be Hispanic with an accent. I can't remember if they identified her as such on the show.
