How Long Will STRANGER THINGS Last? The Duffer Brothers Weigh In

Netflix struck gold with the sci-fi horror series Stranger Things so logically, they'd want the show to continue on until audiences get tired of it, right? Or is there already a planned ending?

It's probably safe to say that not even The Duffer brothers (Matt and Ross), expected the runaway success and pop culture obsession with their sci-fi Netflix drama, Stranger Things.  With season 2 set to drop on October 27, many fans are wondering just how long the series will last?

With Netflix cutting a bevy of shows and looking to tighten its fiscal budget after reports of a $20 billion dollar deficit led to a slight dip in its stock price, it would probably be in the company's best interest to keep the show going as long as it remains this popular.  However, that's not what Matt and Ross currently have planned.  In fact, they know exactly when they want the show to end.

"We’re thinking it will be a four-season thing and then out," said Ross to Vulture.com as his brother added, "We just have to keep adjusting the story.  Though I don’t know if we can justify something bad happening to them once a year."  Ross continued, "They’re going to have to get the f*%k out of this town!"

Whether they feel the same two years from now as a potential fourth season looks to air on Netflix remains to be seen.  Especially with the rising frequency of popular shows having their final run of episodes split and spread across an additional season.

Was thinking they were gonna say for as long as people keep watching.

Glad they're going this route. It can't keep up the same things over and over otherwise it's the Walking Dead. Extremely dry.

@Nightmare - I kind of felt it should have been a new story with new characters each season. Where each season exists within the same continuity as one another.

Season 1 being about Eleven and the Demagorgon.

Season 2 being maybe about a town that's been invaded by Aliens but nobody knows because they have taken the forms of humans.

And so on and so forth. Something fresh each season. But I did love the cast of the first season.

@Nightmare - I disagree on The Walking Dead. But only because the source material is still ongoing, and the basic premise was a "zombie movie" that never ends. Plus, until Kirkman steps out, or the show runs longer than the comic, it still remains my favorite Comic Book TV Show. Supernatural, on the other hand, that's a show that has long since needed to go. The series finale was supposed to be in the fifth season. But they are still going, and I have no clue why.

I like that they've already thought ahead about how to bring the series to an end. I know that writers change, new ideas are thought of daily, and internal pressures from Netflix to continue performing are always a factor, but it's good to, at least, have a template for how to conclude something.

Barb dies every season, she's basically treated like Meg

Unless they expand the show into something completely different, there's really no possible way it could go further than 4 seasons. So I'm glad they know to stop while ahead.

Smart men. Go out with a planned bang like Breaking Bad, not an overdrawn tedium like The Walking Dead

That makes sense. Drawing it on too long wouldn't be smart unless they change it into an anthology series or something. Hopefully, Season 2 can match the quality of Season 1.

Not gonna lie. Would be cool to see Hellboy go up against the Demogorgon

Eh...Not gonna lie. I'd be satisfied if they stopped at Season 2. Keep it short and Classic

I'm not opposed to having longer than usual hiatus's between seasons to kind of offset the notion its happening repeatedly year after year.

I can't even imagine the kids growing into young adults. Hopfully the show ends when they're still young.

@MasterMix - what about a fast forward to adulthood, "It" style

It didn't hook me, but not a bad show.

It'd have been cool if each season was an anthology season, so they could tell smaller, more contained stories with a better sense of closure in each finale.

4 seasons is a good run, the kids would be 15 or 16 by then
