Will THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY Return For Season 2? The Showrunners Know How The Ongoing Comic Series Ends

Netflix has yet to renew The Umbrella Academy for season 2 but if it does, the showrunners already know the overarching themes and ending for the ongoing Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá Dark Horse comic.

First announced back in July 2017, Netflix's adaptation of Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá's ongoing Dark Horse series was something of a surprise hit when it debuted on February 15.  With Netflix and Marvel/Disney now competitors, the streaming giant will need to look elsewhere to satisfy its fanboy subscribers.

Speaking to Collider, Way and Bá revealed that they gave co-showrunner Steve Blackman an outline of the entire series, including where the unreleased volumes will head.

"What I did for Steve Blackman (the showrunner) and the writers in that first writers room was to create an eighteen-page document that laid everything out. Even of the graphic novels that haven’t come out yet. Which should equal eight when we’re all done. So I gave them the blueprint for what happens, because you do want to seed certain things in there for future series and the hope is that it’s a success so that you do a lot more of these. They’re very curious what Gabriel and I are doing next. We always send them the new comics. They really want to know what’s happening."

With the live-action Marvel TV shows departing for Disney+ and The CW Arrowverse shows also potentially leaving for its own parent-company streaming platform, are comic book adaptations like The Umbrella Academy enough for you to maintain your Netflix subscription? It will be a while until I watch the series but I am glad the series is getting great views. Hopefully, more Dark Horse stuff gets adapted on Netflix.

Hope Ellen Page's role is minimized next season. Or recast her. Really really did not like her in the show. Luther and Five were the best, followed by Klaus.

@HeavyMetal4Life - i gotta disagree bud. Her role worked the way she played it...at least for me. Also still havent watched ARQ ive been stuck on a bunch of old ass slashers flicks. Slumber Party Massacre and Microwave Massacre. Ill keep you uodated on my progress though.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I hope so too. I felt like I was watching Ellen Page versus watching White Violin. I just didn’t really enjoy it. and I agree I enjoyed Luther and Five. I enjoyed Klaus and actually told my wife I think a small series just focusing on him would do well since if I could see dead people, Id be a junkie too haha I enjoyed Diego even though it felt a lot like what I expected Dick grayson in Titans.

@MrCamw1 - fair enough, to each their own I guess.

And haha no worries, sounds good! Whenever you get to it. Speaking of slashers, I watched this movie called "You Might Be The Killer." Its a bit of a meta horror comedy that makes fun of slasher tropes. Its not a great movie per say, and it doesn't take itself too seriously, but its interesting and fun and VERY bloody. Also just rewatched the new Halloween, so good :-)

@DarkArrow19 - exactly! Yeah, that's how I felt, she just annoyed the hell out of me after a while. Didn't care for the writing of her character, let alone how Ellen Page portrayed her. And she just looked and felt like she was in a different show. And since the season centered around her (she has top billing in the credits), that was a problem for me. I wanted Allyson to pull the trigger (if you know what I mean).

Luther imo had the most development as a character, the most emotional depth. I really felt for him, and he was kind of just this big lovable ape bear, lol. Five was just all kinds of awesome, in his power set, his fighting skills, his intellect. Klaus became good to me in the back half (essentially once he goes to Vietnam), but I wish that he was written better; his character arc kept being reset almost every episode with the will he, won't he use drugs. That got a bit old for me after a while, and I felt like they finally got him right in the last couple episodes. Other than those 3, I really liked Hazel.

@HeavyMetal4Life - By no.means are the two movies i mentioned good, but theyre enjoyable enough so You Might Be A Killer may be uo my alley. Halloween 2018 Ill have to rewatch soon as well.

@MrCamw1 - you sound like a fan of slashers so I think you'll appreciate You Might Be The Killer. Its meta and has a twist or two. Just the kind of bloody slasher film that you can sit back and watch and enjoy.

@HeavyMetal4Life - yeah that plot device with Klaus will he won’t he do drugs was old. I agree with you that they definitely got him right after he went to Vietnam.

And yeah Number 5 I think is my favorite. Just the writing of him looking like a kid but with history and just overal knowledge, I think that kid did an amazing job.

And lastly, Luther. I enjoyed his arc going from leader to basically a huge lie. And him being disappointed with how he thought their dad was sending him on a real mission. And he just feels obligated to take care of the team both on missions along with emotionally. To me he had almost a captain America vibe.

@DarkArrow19 - I hope we get some exploration of what happened to Ben. One of many mysteries that the writers/showrunners just didn't bother explaining.

Yeah that kid did a phenomenal job as Five. True standout. Agree with all you said, just a true badass that acted like he was better than everyone else, because he was!

Yeah I agree about what you said regarding Luther. I really felt for him and kept cheering him on. He was just trying to do the right thing- certainly Cap-esque.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I'm so glad to hear I wasn't the only one who didn't think Ellen Page was the weak link in the show. The sad part is she has been great in other stuff, but I just didn't like her in this show.
