DEXTER Sets Limited Series Return For This Fall; Check Out The First Teaser

After a lengthy self-imposed exile, it looks like Dexter Morgan is back to his old tricks, and Showtime has officially confirmed today that the series will return this Fall for a limited series.

Dexter Morgan is officially back.

After being formally announced last October, Showtime has confirmed that the upcoming ten-episode limited series revival of acclaimed Golden Globe-winning drama Dexter will indeed arrive this Fall, with Golden Globe-winner Michael C. Hall set to return as the titular serial killer.

Original showrunner Clyde Phillips, who worked on the series from the beginning right through to the jaw-dropping season four finale, is also back in the driver's seat, which should be welcome news for fans.

During a recent interview, Phillips shared a few details about the new season, reiterating that the new limited series won't be retconning anything from the original series.

We’re not undoing anything. We’re not going to betray the audience and say, ‘Whoops, that was all a dream.’ What happened in the first eight years happened in the first eight years.

There's still no word on any new or returning cast members, but the teaser confirms that production is finally underway. However, from what we can tell, it looks like the setting, at least initially, will be exactly where we last saw Dexter: deep in the woods, living out his days as a mild-mannered lumberjack, and seemingly back to his old tricks.

They'll probably kill Dexter off in this like they originally planned to

As a die-hard original Dexter fan, I have no interest in this. The thing that made the show so compelling were the people that tethered Dexter to relative normalcy, and kept him from being a true monster. All those people are gone. Even at the end, they made a point of Harry no longer being part of Dexter's inner monologue. Deb's dead, Harrison is in South America, Aster is almost definitely on a stripper pole somewhere.

@clornelas - season four literally ended in a good spot. It’s like the show runner closed it off before he left just in case it all got f-Ed up. Watch the first four seasons and forget everything else...

@clornelas -
1. It's from the showrunner of Season 1-4. Him leaving and Scott Buck taking the reigns is literally the reason it went downhill.

2. This is a second chance to give the show a better ending.

Also, this is a self-contained miniseries and not a multi-season revival.

@MrDandy - This. 100% agree. Hello Kyle!

@Darkknight2149 - they already said they're not retconning anything, so idk how you fix killing deb

They ruined this show in the final two seasons and now is not the time to attempt fixing it. I'll watch it, probably hate it even more and pine for the days of quality writing.

@Gizmoduck -
This is from the showrunner who did Season 1-4. I.E. the guy who left right before Scott Buck took over and the show went downhill. If you want that quality writing back, chances are, you got it.

Dexter ended with S4. Can’t say I’m not excited with this return though. Helps to have the showrunner from the first four seasons back, this show just took so many missteps idk if it can be corrected.

@regularmovieguy - After S4, a final season would have been perfect. Several years in the future, Harrison is not true to code. Dexter has failed and he must kill Harrison. Dexter must kill the reflection of himself.

After that piss poor last season I'm glad this show is coming back for the chance at a more solid ending.

The last few seasons actually made me hate Dexter (the character).

@NegativeNerd - Scott Buck took over as showrunner in Dexter from season 6 to the finale. You know, the guy that was showrunner for Iron Fist Season 1 and The Inhumans... Clyde Phillips left as showrunner after he completed season 4, so I am hoping for a return to form.

@TanukiTrooper - That explains why I didn't hate season 5. It wasn't anywhere close to 1-4 but wasn't as awful as the later seasons.

@TanukiTrooper - Yep, he definitely has a track record.

This was such a good show. It did fall off in later seasons and the ending could’ve been better. But it made me happy. Looking forward to more.

Season 1-4 are great and ended in a perfect dark place with season 4 finale. Just watch those and ignore the rest.

No idea how they could even begin to salvage the disaster of the last 4 seasons. Thanks Scott Buck!
