In 2016, fans of Showtime’s Penny Dreadful said goodbye to the Victorian London-set series after three seasons. Now, after nearly four years, creator and writer John Logan is set to return with the spiritual successor to the Gothic horror show: Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.

Unlike the original series, City of Angels is set in Los Angeles during 1938 and will explore Mexican-American folklore rather than iconic characters from British and Irish Gothic fiction.

In addition to adopting a new setting and style, the upcoming series will also be bringing in a new ensemble cast that includes the likes of Natalie Dormer, Daniel Zovatto, Jessica Garza, Johnathan Nieves, Adriana Barraza, Nathan Lane, Kerry Bishé, and Rory Kinnear.

Created by John Logan, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is scheduled to premiere April 26, 2020 on Showtime.

A spiritual descendant of the original Penny Dreadful story set in Victorian-era London, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and his partner Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.

Looks interesting, but not really compelling aside from Dormer as the Angel of Death.

Looks really cool. I loved the first series. More Natalie Dormer is never a bad thing.

Miss the Gothic feel of the first show with the classic monsters, but ill give it a shot. Wonder if he can expect crossover, there were a 2 or 3 immortal characters in the first series, plus one character has the same actor as the Frankenstein Monster

Never could get into the original series, but this does look interesting enough to give it a try

The original series with Eva Green was so, so good. This trailer? I'm not impressed, and I see, from the trailer, SJW plot lines that I have no patience with.

@GeneralZod - If you mean the historically based plotlines such as the the Zoot Riots, the widely reported rampant racial discrimination and corruption in the LA police Department, and the German American Bund movement which was surging through out the United States just prior to WW2. Those are not SJW plot lines those are dark stains on the history of this country that when ever mentioned gets all you fragile lilly white males egos so butt hurt. Deal with it, read a book maybe then you learn patience for other people's plights other than your own.

@MarvelnDCLover - you're absolutely right. A lot of these white folks don't want to hear about Colored people being mistreated. They don't care or want to know or learn about people of color in America. It makes them feel uneasy.

@MarvelnDCLover - shhh. Don't be dropping verifiable facts. Idiots like him hate when you do that.

@MarvelnDCLover - Ahh. The mere mention of "SJW" in an innocuous comment and those that espouse diversity of race and ethnicity let themselves get triggered over those with diverse opinions. By the way, did I falsely disclose to you that I am a white male? Or did you incorrectly assume I am white male?
GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 1/14/2020, 9:44 AM
@Bryanferryfan - So you think I am "white folk"?
Dunejedi

@GeneralZod - Innocuous means not likely to offend, so it’s hardly appropriate in classifying your comment. The terms ‘SJW’ and ‘triggered’ are troll culture: 101. They’re reductive and dismissive towards valid ethical states that are intended to offend. When you go looking for a fight, you aren’t being victimized when someone stands up to you.

On topic: I’m getting a’True Detective season 2’ tonal shift vibe from this trailer. Other than Dormer, there’s not a lot here enticing me. I’ll give it a couple episodes to grab me.

@Dunejedi - "SJW" and "triggered" are "troll culture"? SMH. Substitute "politically correct" for "SJW" and "upset" for "triggered". Had I worded my comment with those Charmin-soft words, would you not have been offended?

@GeneralZod - Did I falsely disclose to you that I was offended, or did you incorrectly assume it?

@GeneralZod @dunejedi - Come on man don't try to back peddle now. You obviously knew your comments were inflammatory and that "SJW" is a common troll word. You yourself gave Dunejedi (great handle btw) alternative words that you deemed "Charmin-soft" therefore knowing that you original comment was inflammatory and trollish. So pause with all that.

To your other point about getting triggered. I didn't get triggered or upset I just simply pointed out that the plotlines that you identified as SJW issues are historical events that took place during the time period and locale in which the series will be set. What bothers you is that those racial plots lines will be used as a backdrop to tell a larger story. It's that larger diverse story is what got YOU triggered because you have no "patience" for the broader story of this country.

As far as diverse opinions I'm willing to discuss any opinion in a respectful manner. Discourse is the only way to deal with these issues.

And yes I do and will continue to assume you are white until proven otherwise.

@Dunejedi - Fact: you were offended.

@MarvelnDCLover - "And yes I do and will continue to assume you are white until proven otherwise." This is as ignorant and plain dumb (not to mention borderline racist) a comment as I've ever read from a CBM user.

"Discourse is the only way to deal with these issues," unless a person disagrees with your POV, in which case you get worked up (i.e., triggered) and, here, play the race card ("you fragile lilly white males egos"), which backfires on you because the person that offered a differing POV isn't even white. (I will give you credit for guessing gender correctly.)

Through experience and ongoing lessons in life, your mind will open and you will one day actually become tolerant of others.

@GeneralZod - "Through experience and ongoing lessons in life, your mind will open and you will one day actually become tolerant of others."
HAHAHA. I can't believe YOU had the nerve to write that

You are just laughable dude.

You know I see a lot of people on this site coming @ you. Calling you this or that, you ever wonder that maybe it's not everyone else who has a problem that in fact, it might be you? Think about that. I'm done with this conversation.
GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 1/16/2020, 9:49 AM
@MarvelnDCLover - "I see a lot of people on this site coming @ you." Flattering, but false. I will continue to freely voice an opinion about a movie or TV show I like or don't like for whatever reason, such as "SJW plot lines that I have no patience with." That's my opinion. You can disagree with it, but when you and your ilk get sufficiently triggered to cross the line with racially-charged statements ("you fragile lilly white males egos"; "I ... will continue to assume you are white until proven otherwise") and name-calling, that's simply wrong. Eventually, you will abate playing the race card. It's part of your learning process.

MarvelnDCLover - 1/16/2020, 6:43 PM
@GeneralZod - Wow you are delusional and ironically so easily "triggered". In this thread alone you have been called an idiot and a racist and not by me, ha. But hey You do you and go ahead and live in your angry myopic little world and me and my ilk will be right over here living in reality.
GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 1/16/2020, 9:48 PM
@MarvelnDCLover - "I'm done with this conversation." Obviously not, son.

Another user called me an "idiot" solely because that user found my "SJW plot lines" statement on this thread to be disagreeable and perhaps upsetting. Think carefully (I know that might be challenging for you) who the real idiot is under those circumstances. But look: I give you credit for not refuting that you played the race card -- not once, but twice ("you fragile lilly white males egos"; "I ... will continue to assume you are white until proven otherwise") -- against me.
