EDITORIAL: VENOM --- A tie-in to the new SPIDER-MAN Franchise?

With rumours surfacing that Josh Trank is in talks to direct a VENOM movie, I speculate about it's involvement, if any, to THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, and how the overall Spidey Franchise could develop.

Okay, we don't have much news on the movie yet, so this won't take long.

But basically, my thoughts on a VENOM movie are this: If you're making a movie about a villain from a superhero's movie universe, surely you'd connect it to the hero's movie?

VENOM was originally announced around the time of SPIDER-MAN 3, and then talk quickly went quiet after the fourth movie in the series went down the pan. So, why is it being revived now? I'm pretty sure it's involved with TASM, it just makes sense. I find it hard to believe they'd make a movie about (arguably) Spidey's biggest nemesis without tying him to the hero. And I highly doubt they'd continue down the path they set out in the third movie.

What I can see happening is this: TASM is released. It's going to be great. It'll feature Rhys Ifans as the villain, and that'll be that. I can see a Nolan-esque turn of events at the end, either featuring Captain Stacy - If he survives the movie - or maybe just a newspaper clipping from the Bugle, showing a report of a massive black 'beast' lurking around the city - queue Venom as the villain for Spidey 2.

But what about the VENOM movie? Destroyer14 recently mentioned in an editorial, which I'll link to below, about a Venom comic series written by Daniel Way. The series initially features the symbiote in the Arctic with a bunch of scientists/explorers. Destroyer14 believes the movie should be a one-shot, but I think his idea could easily be incorporated into the franchise. This is how I'd like to see it going down:

These scientists work for OSCORP. The Venom movie sees the symbiote lurking in the shadows of this base, slowly looking for a worthy host, killing those that aren't. OSCORP calls in military help, and a small infantry are deployed to find the source of the murders. Among the infrantry's ranks is Flash Thompson, who's signed up after being inspired to serve his country by his hero Spider-Man. the symbiote senses Flash is worthy but sees this nobleness within him, and seeks to destroy it by both killing off his comrades and using them to brainwash him into feeling this sense of isolation and betrayal from his government, and ultimately Spider-Man, who inspired into walking into his own imminent death. The symbiote eventually reveals itself, and with Flash seeing it as his only means of survival, embraces it. The Venom movie ends with Flash/Venom returning to NYC to seek out his new-found nemesis.

Spidey 2 (or is that 5?) would see Spider-Man facing off against Venom, who all the while is being courted by Norman Osborne to work for him, after seeing all the shit that went down on his base. The trilogy would ideally end (for me, anyway) with Spider-Man having to face both the Green Goblin and Venom, ultimately leading to Gwen Stacy's death and leaving the franchise open to continue.

Truthfully, I really want to see Flash Thompson as Venom, if the character has to be featured. I prefer the black-ops look/approach, to the monstrous Eddy Brock version.
Preferably, Venom won't be featured at all, though.

TASM is a reboot, so how can Venom exist when he hasnt even tried to bond with Spiderman? The symbiot acquires its powers (webs, strength, spider symbol on his chest) through trying to bond with Spiderman. It was so close to permanent bond that when Parker got it off, it kept the powers when it bonded to Brock.
It would just be a symbiot if it hadnt bonded to Spiderman initially.

@felixxx, taken from Marvel's own website: "The first individual to bond with the symbiote was Edward Brock, seeing as Peter Parker did not allow it to complete the process. Naturally the symbiote chose to endow Eddie with most of the powers Spider-Man had, but the symbiote via Brock's innovative mentality managed to create some new powers and even mutate over time."

So I don't think the symbiote actually needs to bond to Spider-Man to obtain it's powers. It's an alien symbiote after all, it's not just useless black goo.

I know Eddie was the first to FULLY bond but it was the powers the symbiot took from Spiderman that makes him Venom(it call itself that because it believes that its Spidermans "venom", his death bringer). Im not saying he would just be goo, it would bond with a human or an animal but wouldn’t have any “spidey” powers like he does now. It could develop its own but with no Spiderman first, why would it have Spideys powers? Venom is the anit-spiderman. His whole existence evolves around Spiderman. Im all about a Venom movie since I like him better than Spiderman anyway, but it has to try to bond to Spiderman in order to actually be Venom and not just a symbiot bonded to a human. You would have to change his whole origin for your tie in to work and in doing so you would eliminate what makes him Spidermans greatest enemy. Also need to remember that the symbiot told Eddie that Parker was spiderman. Eddie hates Parker, Venom hates Spiderman=ultimate nemesis.
Im not knocking your idea, but unless they make a movie based off Spiderman 3, in which the symbiot survives and restores Eddie from little peices of smoking meat, we wont see Venom till TASM 3 or 4 if were lucky. Now you could do your own symbiot story with this orign and develop a whole new character, that would be sweet but Venoms original orign is improtant to his character and his relationship to Spiderman.

a very interesting idea, i would see that, although a found footage venom movie would be really cool 2, sort of in the style of blair withc project, venom would be a great horror film if done right

If you want the movie to be in the style of the Thing then go watch the Thing (classic version). I don't care if the host isn't Brock I'd rather see them take inspiration from Remenders series. But Venom well wouldn't be venom if he didn't bond with Peter in the first place no spider-like powers nothing, so it makes no sense what so ever to call the movie Venom if its going to be like the thing. However I do like the idea of Flash Thompson being the host but what ever its too [frick]ing early to talk about how the movies going to go down as far as I am aware the director hasn't signed on yet he's just negotiating

TAS2 should include the symbiote with peter and eddie brock have spidey beat them, end with a scene of the black glob slipping away. Makes the venom movie about the symbiote attaching to flash, with him becoming a hero by the end. Then TAS3 could have a venom cameo (and hopefully ben riely/scarlet spider), before v2 with a spidey cameo.
