Venom: Let There Be Carnage arrives exclusively at UK cinemas from October 15, and as we're sure you'll know from the trailers and clips that have been released by Sony Pictures, the relationship between Venom and Eddie Brock will be a major part of the plot. At one point, the characters engage in a brilliantly choreographed battle in Eddie's apartment.
Putting that sequence together was no easy feat, which we learned during a recent conversation with director Andy Serkis. The filmmaker talked us through how he pitted Eddie against Venom and credited Tom Hardy's work as being key in helping this hilariously memorable encounter come to life.
"Yeah, the thing is, the performance side of it is all down to Tom’s brilliance as a physical performer. His process of creating Venom was recording all Venom’s lines first to himself and then play it in an earpiece so he could improvise with 'Venom' and his own timing," the filmmaker explained.
"That’s the way we started every scene, but that one grew as an idea. It was scripted as a bit of a slap fight, and then we extended that as we realised this was turning into something major. It ended up being a lover throwing another lover’s clothes out in this relationship moment," Serkis continued. "That was a really exciting part of the process to build and work with the stunt guys. They did such a fantastic job. With the visual effects team, just working out exactly the special effects because a lot of what gets thrown are real things. It was a huge thing to choreograph."
The first movie didn't do the greatest job of exploring Venom and Eddie's dynamic beyond a surface level, but with these two clashing in this movie, the stage is set for things to potentially change in a big way for them moving forward. What form that will take is hard to say, but Serkis did recently talk to us about developing Venom's status as a "Lethal Protecto" in Venom 3.
