HALO Live-Action Series Is Finally Happening As Showtime Orders 10 Episodes Of Video Game Adaptation

It's been a long time coming but it's been confirmed today that a live-action Halo series is indeed in the works at Showtime as the premium cable network has ordered ten episodes. Read on for details...

There's been talk of a live-action Halo adaptation for years now and more than four years after it was first put into development, Showtime has officially announced that they've picked up ten episodes of the scripted drama from showrunner Kyle Killen (Awake) and director Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes). The filmmaker will actually helm multiple episodes and also serve as executive producer.

Production is expected to commence early next year so it could be a while before we get any casting or story details but Showtime has a great track record so we can probably expect good things all round

"Halo is our most ambitious series ever, and we expect audiences who have been anticipating it for years to be thoroughly rewarded," says Showtime CEO David Nevins. "In the history of television, there simply has never been enough great science fiction. Kyle Killen’s scripts are thrilling, expansive and provocative, Rupert Wyatt is a wonderful, world-building director, and their vision of Halo will enthrall fans of the game while also drawing the uninitiated into a world of complex characters that populate this unique universe." It's unclear if the plan is still for it to later arrive on Xbox Live.

Halo stands a very good chance of rivalling HBO's big Game of Thrones plans and Amazon's The Lord of the Rings series but video game adaptations have a spotty track record and fans of the games will have very specific ideas about how this one should play out. What do you guys think? Do you think Halo will be well suited to television? As always, share your thoughts on this news in the comments section.

Yeah... No it really doesn't.

@Jcool - If it’s actually good....yes it really can.

@Jcool - lol. Seriously wtf is that exec smoking?

Halo is cool and all but has nowhere near the global and cross cultural appeal of LOTR or GOT. GOT right now is more popular than LOTR.

@DTor91 - Showtime isn't big enough to make a show to rival something on HBO or Amazon. Remember Amazon is spending like 500M on LOTR and HBO spends close to 100M on each GOT season.

@Comicbookart - A Song of Ice and Fire(you know, though probably not, the book series GOT is based off of) was nowhere near a cultural phenomenon until the show came out. The book series was popular in fantasy book circles but that's it. Halo probably has an equally sized fanbase as that. LOTR is kinda tired by this point, The Hobbit having squandered quite a bit of good will with it's blatant money grab in turning what should have been a 1 film, 2 max movie into three. So yes, if they throw enough money at this, and if it turns out to be any good, it has the potential to compete quite well with those two franchises.

MCC finally fixed (I know, four years too late, whoop-de-doo!), Chief back in his classic look for Halo Infinite, and now this.

Looks like 343 is finally turning this ship around once and for all, but I'm still gonna remain cautious.

@ThatAlexDude - What was wrong with the Chief's new look? I thought it looked good.

@TexasAvenger - It's sort of a jab at the new art style 343 developed for their former Halo games. I personally don't mind it, but plenty of fans grew a strong distaste to it.

I don't mind Chief's look from 4 and Guardians, but personally his look from 2 and 3 are his most iconic. The only reason they brought the classic look back is because of fan outcries.

@TheMisfit138 - No story? Watch this video about ONE Halo installation. This barely scratches the surface of the lore.

Halo is cool video game series and that's pretty much it. The lore is weak. They haven't delivered on the promises of the lore with the games yet. So I'm not really hype for this.

The Halo lore is huge, the stories are good, the design is cool, soundtrack is great - why would that not work on screen??? The biggest reason video game adaptions hasnt worked so far is because they make them as such crappy movies - not because the lack of story in the source material.

@Grodd87 - Wow i never even cross my mind that Fallout could be a show, but when u look at the lore it has everything it needs to be a successful TV show. Yh i would definitely watch that. Are you getting Fallout 76 ??

Showtime is a great network definitely in the top 5. If you're not watching Billions, i suggest you do. I am excited for this just hoping they give it the right budget for a property like Halo. man the thought of seeing live action Spartan amour makes we want to sing

ThatAlexDude - 6/28/2018, 12:02 PM
@JohnGotDaJuice - Yes. All these story-driven games nowadays have potential to work as shows and movies.

Uncharted, God of War, etc. If done right with the right direction and the right kind of people, videogame-to-movie/tv media could become killer hits.
