Given the success of the Halo franchise on Xbox, it's crazy that Master Chief has never received the big screen treatment but considering the fact that video game movies have such a spotty track record, it's easy to see why they've seemingly been reluctant to move forward with an adaptation of any sort.

However, the franchise is now on its way to television (finally) as Showtime is developing a series which has been confirmed for a ten-episode first season with Kyle Killen (Awake) serving as showrunner.

Now, it's been confirmed that the show is going to feature fan-favourite character John-117, a.k.a. Master Chief. "It took us a long time to get the script but we felt like we had something that was really interesting and felt like it belonged on Showtime in terms of its character depth, and it’s going to be a big show," Showtime President and CEO David Nevins said after confirming Master Chief.

As for what made Killen a good fit to write and take charge of the series, Showtime President of Programming Gary Levine added: "We made a conscious decision to hire a writer not known for sci-fi and not known for big battle movies because that’s already baked into the Halo franchise, and we will service that, but we also wanted to ensure that we were getting beneath the formidable armor of the Spartans and really getting inside the team drama so it felt like it belonged on Showtime."

It's previously been reported that the Halo TV show will feature multiple leads and multiple planets, so it's good to know that a place has been found for Master Chief. What do you guys think of this news?

Well duh, god forbid it wasn’t Mario or Sonic the Hedgehog leading this show 😂😂
Never really played the games, but what I’ve seen looks very cinematic, primed for something with a long-format television series

If warcraft hadn't underperformed then wed probably be getting a halo movie instead. With the amount of money they've made i don't understand why they can't pay for script rewrites until they strike gold. However, i'm glad their focusing on character for this show, they need to emulate marvel, who have mastered adapting the heroes journey to a variety of uses. It could be good like starship troopers if they get it right, and pave the way for a big screen adaptation at last. One of these video games has to break the curse, its just basic probability.

@Presto76 - They've tried and theyre willing to spend money, the issue was the movie companies not wanting to work with Bungie/343 closely to make sure it was accurate.

No shit, who else should have been the main character? Kratos?

@BootyPeep - Have you played Halo 5? :p

On a serious note, I would not have said no to a Band of Brothers kind of ODST show in this style:

@Floke - I only played Halo 2 and Reach. Was never a huge fan of shooters.
But now that you mention it, that ODST series could have been really interesting.

@BootyPeep - In 5, out of the 10 levels, you only play as the MC for 3 of them lol

Well that’s a relief. It was actually something I was worried about in regards to the show. Very much looking forward to this show

If this looks like it’s shaping up to be good, I just may sign up for showtime for it! They just better include the Flood and give those pieces a sci-if horror feel, like the game did. The Flood is creep AF.

Wish they'd let Blomkamp direct a HALO film. After that short film he did, I really wanted a feature-length production of that. If you haven't seen it, check it out, it's a great short film:

I don't know why people are saying "No shit." They could have easily done the show without Chief. Anyway, I can't wait for this. Showtime is a great network. I love Homeland.

If it can be of the same epic quality as these, then it would be the greatest thing ever.
