Following the departure of Rupert Wyatt from Showtime's live-action Halo television series, executives at the network have acted swiftly to find a replacement for the director and executive producer.

On Thursday, Showtime announced that Otto Bathurst will helm multiple episodes while also serving as executive producer, writer, and showrunner for the series based on the popular Xbox video game franchise.

Production on the Halo series is scheduled to begin "later this year." The initial episode account also appears to have been reduced from the original 10-episode order to nine.

Bathurst, a British TV vet, has an extensive resume that could lend itself nicely to the sci-fi universe. He directed 2018's Robin Hood, multiple episodes of Peaky Blinders, and the infamous "National Anthem" episode of Black Mirror.

We don't have specific plot details yet, but Showtime did provide a general overview of the series.

In its adaptation for SHOWTIME, HALO will take place in the universe that first came to be in 2001, dramatizing an epic 26th-century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant. HALO will weave deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future.

Showtime's Halo TV series does not yet have a premiere date.

In the meantime, while we're on the subject of live-action adaptations of video games, you might want to check out Neill Blomkamp's Conviction - An Anthem Story, a live-action short (well, more of a trailer) that was created for BioWare's newly released sci-fi game, Anthem.

All I wanna know is who they'll put in the suit. Honestly I hope they take an unknown actor for it. Maybe that Rico Verhoeven guy from Jean-Claude van Damme's Kickboxer movie

@MalseMarcel @Soos - If they do cast someone and plan on showing him, he better have red hair:

"If you went down into that line and found a nerd with a deep canon Halo t-shirt and said describe the Master Chief to this police sketch artist, that police sketch artist would then produce a perfectly accurate rendering of an older man, almost painfully pale, almost albino white, with pale blue eyes, reddish hair, close cropped to a skin head, and maybe the last remnants of freckles he had when he was a kid."

@Soos - Yeah, that's also what I was basing it off of. In one of the Halo Fall of Reach books the cover is a split-screen of MC's helmet and a young-ish MC, and he is depicted similarly, with a buzzcut and reddish-brown hair.

Dude has been living off of the few good Black Mirror episodes he has directed. Robin Hood, which I watched for shits and giggles online a month ago, was one of the WORST FILM I'VE SEEN IN THE LAST DECADE.

@BlackBeltJones - So you're gonna focus on one flim when the rest of his track record is solid? Also this a tv show and the highlights of his career have been tv shows.

@BreakTheCode - A Halo series should be a bit more cinematic yes? I dont want to discount the good work he has done, 3 episodes of Peaky Blinders and one of Black mirror, but Halo is a world of bombast and grandiosity, even this being a tv show I would assume it will be more akin to GOT, and his most recent credit being a blockbuster film, has those characteristics.

He didn't do too well with that.

@BlackBeltJones - I watched it a couple days ago. It’s almost so bad it’s good, but it’s mainly just bad.

I need to know if this show will have Martin O'Donnell being the composer or not, because if not this isn't Halo. His music helped set the tone of the series and without him, Halo isn't Halo.

That movie was not good but the action was great so maybe with better writing and a better concept this could still be great. Maybe?

@chewie - I did. It's a competent enough movie. I guess I expected more due to it being a big studio release, JJ's Bad Robot producing and all the secrecy that usually goes with his movies.

But it's OKAY. Really didn't need all the secrecy, it's pretty straight forward and kind of forgettable.
