THE LAST OF US PART II Will Be Adapted Over Multiple Seasons; Showrunner Reveals Season 2 Episode Count

It's been confirmed that The Last of Us Part II will likely be adapted across as many as three seasons, while we also have comments from showrunner Craig Mazin about season 2's shorter episode count...

It's already been over a year for since The Last of Us wrapped up its first season and, thanks to last year's Hollywood strikes, the series now won't return until 2025.

Today, it's been confirmed it will be back with fewer episodes than season 1. In an interview with Deadline (via SFFGazette.com), co-creators, executive producers, showrunners and directors Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann confirmed season 2 will consist of seven episodes. On the plus side, they'll boast longer runtimes.

The story, which adapts The Last of Us Part II video game, is also expected to continue into a third and possibly fourth season!

"The story material that we got from Part II of the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons," Mazin tells the trade. "When you do that, you look for natural breakpoints, and as we laid it out, this season, the national breakpoint felt like it came after seven episodes."

"We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we’re taking our time," he continued, "and go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in Season 1 too."

"We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that - as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television - Season 3 will be significantly larger."

"And indeed, the story may require Season 4. One thing is absolutely for sure, I don’t see how we could tell the story that remains after Season 2 is complete in one more season," Mazin concluded.

These comments will likely only fuel concerns among fans of The Last of Us games that HBO will stretch this story out a little too much due to the first season's success. Telling the second game's ambitious story over seven episodes would be impossible but three seasons suggest a lot of original content will be added.

On the plus side, this may mean Pedro Pascal's Joel gets a bigger role in the story.

The Last of Us season 2's returning cast includes Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, and Rutina Wesley as Maria.

Previously announced new cast members include Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac. Catherine O’Hara also guest stars.

The show is written by showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. The series is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television and is also executive-produced by Carolyn Strauss, Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Evan Wells.

The Last of Us season 2 will premiere on HBO in 2025.

@UniqNo - I think that's the best approach. Season 2 will be a long drawn out introduction of the newest characters and their daily missions for food and supplies. It will also show us why Joel and Ellie aren't speaking. But I do believe it doesn't end with that "shocker". I feel like that's Episode 6. Episode 7 will be about Ellie venturing out with Dina and Shimmer and reaching the city that. Season 3 will be about Abbie as you said and end with Abbie and Owen at the Aquarium and Season 4 will be about Ellie going to town on all of them. I think season 5 will be split with 4 episodes going to Abbie and Liv reaching California and episodes 5-8 with Ellie reaching California.

@SonOfAGif - Personally i don't see it going over 4, unless TLoU part 3 is Naughty Dog's next game.

It may happen in ep 6 as you said as that's when big events tend to happen (an ep before the finale). but it's defintiely going to happen (imo) end of s2 or 1st ep of season 3 at latest. We know Pascal is in demand already so i'd imagine his screen time is already less this time around to get the audience prepared so he's not overly missed. Kind of like they did Ned Stark in the latter episodes of GoT season 1

Called this ages ago!

S2 will end with that shocker from the game.

S3 will be from Abbey' perspective and 4 will be Ellie in lead.

@UniqNo - this is perfect

@UniqNo - They should do Senator Abbey Armstrong's perspective along with the current story, the problem with part 2 (among many many other issues) is that fans did not give a shit what happened to Armstrong after witnessing him play golf with Joel. No amount of dog petting could subside that shit.

@HashTagSwagg - lol
@bobevanz - I feel what the game tried to do with Abbey didn't work because it was just one entry and the players were already invested in Ellie and Joel, but now as a viewer with no control over the character you're able to just sit back and take it in. Depending on how good and actor the Abbey girl will be, i feel getting a better understand of her POV and motivations can only lead to an emotionally powerful final season.

@UniqNo - I think they should switch between protagonists each episode. Think if they do one season focused on one character, most people will probably skip Abby's perspective.

@bkmeijer1 - Well maybe not just solely Abby, but her and her groups, showing that they're very much the same as Ellie and hers. And if we're doing it from her pespective, there couple be potential for Joel to show up still (kind of like a season 2.5 rather than a season 3 in some respects).

@UniqNo - true, but I'm not sure people will stick around when a show changes protagonist midway through

@UniqNo - Season 4 will probably be Game 3. Considering Season 2 isn't even out until 2025, it's likely we get Game 3 sometime in 2026

I liked season 1. most video game adaptions I have not liked much.

Pascal makes it work. I'm all in for season 2.

Makes sense, the second game is significantly longer than the first, plus it gives a bit of time for Ellie to age up a little

@harryba11zack - I think this is quite true. Especially for those who weren't too aware of the game. Season 2 he'll have less screen time and they're going to bring in new actors to hopefully captivate the audience for the future seasons.

Sounds like they don't have faith in the story they wrote for the game so are changing it. I thought they were so proud of the second game. They were attacking the customers that didn't like it and were calling them terrible names all over social media and the tv while praising themselves. Now they are backing down?! Bunch of cowards.

I bet they wished they thought about splitting the first game into two seasons

Think a good breaking point is the end of the Jackson chapter. They could do all the flashbacks and that chapter in chronological order, leaving the entirety of Seattle for S3.

Good! #2 is so long I’m glad they’re taking their time with it and spreading it out. You can’t fit the entire game in one season.
