In 2010, director Kevin Tancharoen surprised everyone with a "dark and gritty" fan film of Mortal Kombat titled Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. The short re-imagined Mortal Kombat in a hyper realistic world.

Warner Bros. were impressed with Tancharoen's work as well as the response the short recieved and hired Tancharoen to direct the web series, Mortal Kombat: Legacy which would be used as promotion for NetherRealm Studios own reboot, 2011's hit video game Mortal Kombat.

Tancharoen followed up with a second season before leaving Mortal Kombat in 2013, after which he would go on to direct episodes of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Flash.

Tancharoen was at one point scheduled to direct a new Mortal Kombat feature film with Oren Uziel attached as writer. Obviously, the project fell through, but the director recently shared concept art for the character Mileena on his Instagram account.
