James Wan Updates The Status Of The MORTAL KOMBAT Reboot

Currently, Aquaman helmer James Wan will only produce and not direct the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot for New Line Cinemas although he says he has a special affinity for the longstanding fighting game.

At the Summer TCA Press Tour to promote his new Magyver reboot on CBS, James Wan also touched on the Mortal Kombat reboot  in addition to dishing on his Aquaman plans.  Said Wan, "It's still cooking away. With that particular project, that's a really cool property that I loved growing up as a kid. Besides the game, even the movies as well, I kind of enjoyed them for what they are."

Head over to our sister site, GameFragger.com to read more from Wan on his plans for the reboot and what old-school martial arts flick he likens the film to.

With Wan busy at work on Aquaman, it stands to reason that he won't have a ton of time to devote to Mortal Kombat.  With him in the producer role, it will be interesting to see who he hires to lead development on the project.  Perhaps  David F. Sandberg, who's directing Anabelle 2 and who just had a successful debut with Lights Out ( a film that Wan produced)?

Those movies were a disaster back in the day... Be interesting to see a new take on it.

@MarkJulian - I agree... I got giddy when Scorpion and Sub-Zero first walked in. But the acting was horrid. I hope they don't feel the need to "update" the suits, but I know they will.

Warner Bros. gives James Wan key to their Mortal Kombat Universe (70 characters, 24 years of History). That's a big win for Hollywood. Well Deserved.
Glad they're not rushing it because I want this to be good!

Fun fact: his cinematographer from Dead Silence to Insidious 2 (and director of Conjuring spinoff Annabelle) was the director of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

How would you rather see a Wan helmed MK than Wan helmed Aquaman??????

If there is one person that could make the movie great, its James Cameron. If one could make it bad ass, its James Wan.
