MORTAL KOMBAT: Listen To A Remixed Version Of The '90s Movie's Iconic Theme, "Techno Syndrome"

The Mortal Kombat reboot is shaping up to be a very different adaptation to the '90s movie in many respects, but one thing that did carry over is The Immortal's banger of a theme tune. Have a listen...

Mortal Kombat (1995) still holds up as one of the best video game adaptations of all time for many fans of the long-running fighting game series, and the infectious techno theme is one of the reasons the movie is still so fondly remembered.

The upcoming reboot is shaping up to be a more serious affair altogether, but director Simon McQuoid and composer Benjamin Wallfisch both felt that the spirit of The Immortals' EDM classic "Techno Syndrome" should live on.

“Ben and I both knew that we needed to use the classic Immortals track ‘Techno Syndrome’ as source material for the entire score of Mortal Kombat," said McQuoid. "But along with that, we knew that an updated, elevated version of the song also needed to be created, and Ben certainly delivered. I am so excited by this new 2021 version of the track; when I first heard it, it blew my mind. Actually, Ben kind of blew my mind on a daily basis through the making of this film, so we can all thank Benjamin Wallfisch for his genius and passion in creating ‘Techno Syndrome 2021.’”

Have a listen to the remixed version of the track, which was produced and performed by Wallfisch and mixed and mastered by Tom Norris (Skrillex, Gaga, Zedd). WaterTower Music will release the full Original Motion Picture Soundtrack on April 16, 2021.

In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld's Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family's safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark.
Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?

Mortal Kombat is set for a simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max on April 23.

Hmmmm not exactly an improvement. The classic one oozes with a vibe of Kombat and destiny. But not this one.
Although I have to say the version used in the launch trailer for MK11 comes pretty close.

As a drums & bass fan I quite like it, although I thought an epic orchestral rendition of the theme would have been more appropiate for this film.

I don't hate it. But they could have just got skrillex to mix it. From the middle part you could tell that's the around they were going for

The OG is more techno. This is more dubstep... and what cable once said about dubstep applies to this day.

That first minute is absolutely fantastic, drops down after the name drop, picks back up half a minute later, then back down after the ‘Finish Him!”. It’s good, but it’s missing something, like the fighter names are almost obscured under the beat, I don’t know. I could easily see this remix playing in clubs, the full video even, if they have a screen to project it.
