MORTAL KOMBAT Sequels And Spinoffs Reportedly In The Works At Warner Bros.

The recent Mortal Kombat reboot performed reasonably well for Warner Bros. (it's still one of the most viewed movies on HBO Max), and a new report indicates that sequels and spinoffs are in the works.

The Mortal Kombat reboot had a decent enough run at the box office all things considered, but the R-rated movie performed a lot better on HBO Max, and is still one of the most viewed films on the streaming service. Now, we're hearing that a sequel - and possibly several other spinoffs - are in the works.

We don't have a whole lot to go on, but in Variety's report on Dune being released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously and the chances of a sequel being greenlit, the trade mentions that "Warner Bros. looking to develop other installments in its Mortal Kombat universe." Based on this, we can probably assume that nothing is officially in development yet, but it certainly sounds like we can count on a direct sequel at the very least.

Mortal Kombat left itself open to a follow-up by setting up the debut of klassic kombatant Johnny Cage, with Cole Young (Lewis Tan) setting off to Hollywood to enlist the cocky movie star for "Team Raiden" in the battle to come.

One of the biggest criticisms aimed at the first film was that it didn't actually feature a tournament, but we expect that to be rectified in the sequel. Though nothing has been confirmed, other fan-favorite characters who could potentially appear include Baraka, Kitana, Sindel and Shao Khan. Plus, although Sub-Zero was killed off at the end of the movie, Joe Taslim has hinted at his possible return as Noob Saibot.

What do you guys make of this news? What would you like to see from a Mortal Kombat sequel? Let us know in the usual place.

Perfect! I was getting anxious that they didn't plan a sequel.

My hopes:
2023 - Mortal Kombat 2: the story of the first tournament. Introducing Johnny Cage, Shao Kahn & Kitanna (prefferably played by Ryan Reynolds, Arnold Schwarzenegger & Sissi Stringer).

2025 - Mortal Kombat 3: The Invasion of Shao Kahn of Earth. Introduces Stryker and Fujin.

Then they can try some prequel spin-offs introducing Quan-Chi and Shinnok as the antagonists of the sequel trilogy.

That's good news, I enjoyed the movie.
First played MK on my Cousin's PC in the early 1990's and played MK11 a lot during lockdown.

More Liu Kang please, want the focus to be on him. Hopefully they get some better writers though.

What we all need is a spin-off centered around the wooden Mr. Literal Plot Armor

It was an enjoyable movie (Still not as good as the 1995 one though) but lots of unnecessary changes & tampering for the sake of doing it.

Sequel I'll take them retconning the Arcana bulls*t (Seriously, why & what was that all about), Needing the Dragon marking to be chosen or entered into the tournament (More bullsh*t to retcon) & kill Cole Young (I like Lewis Tan, but not a fan of this character & was no need to create him).

Fix all those for the sequel & I'm in! Cole to be killed with a gruesome Fatality in the tournament from whatever already established MK character they feel killing him off with. Put him up against Khan for the hell of it & let him bring the Hammer down!

awesome, i thought the movie was great, i did expect an extended cut on blu-ray though as some parts just seem to jump from 1 thing to the next with no connection and could of done with being fleshed out.

there were some good parts that set up certain things for a sequel too.

i thought the cast was pretty good for the most part, the only character i felt didnt really come across as should was raiden , whether its because of lamberts portrayal or something else he just didnt shine for me .

people shit on cole but i didnt mind the character at all, watched it with my son n its his favourite character.

Few things didnt make sense like with hanzo talking in 3 different languages, would of liked to have seen the feud between hanzo and bi han in more detail, but overall really enjoyable so looking forward to it .

Bring back kano with his cybernetic eye, and i didnt realise how in love i am with jessica mcnamee until this so the more of her the better too.

I didn't hate it, but I felt like this movie was two-steps back in a lot of ways (people get magic powers because they steal a tattoo from someone else... really?) and a lot of the central characters were super bland.

The appeal of a fighting tournament is the weird and wacky personalities bouncing off of each other, and aside from Kano and Kabal(?!) there wasn't much of that happening at all. And I kind of hated the overall hyper-textured aesthetic of the weirder costumes and the video game backgrounds.

I just feel like if you're going to do a "not actually a Mortal Kombat tournament" movie, you could stick to real world, grittier locations and probably save some money.

A movie about Kano, Kabal and Efron Black vs Sonya, Jax and special forces could be pretty great. Show how Kabal got burnt and how they got Kano into their custody. Make it in a John wick style

A movie about the original Mythologies Sub Zero game setting up Shinnok, Quan Chi and the war between the Lin Kuei and Shirai Ryu, which can be a little more Kurosawa type.

A movie about Liu Kang and Kung Lao training under Raiden and Bo Rai Cho, in the vain of classic Hong Kong martial arts movie.

Then round it out with the actual Tournament movie which takes place after the new reboot.
