Neil Burger No Longer Helming UNCHARTED; Video Game Adaptation To Get A Rewrite

After David O. Russell dropped out, Neil Burger looked set to helm the big screen adaptation of the popular Playstation 3 video game. He's out, and the duo behind have been hired to rewrite the screenplay.

Variety reports that Marianne and Cormac Wibberley (National Treasure, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle) have been hired by Sony Pictures to rewrite the big screen adaptation of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Neil Burger (Limitless) is no longer attached to helm the best-selling video game to live-action film project, and the studio will now reportedly look for a new director once this latest draft of the script has been completed. Uncharted has had a troubled production up until this point, especially as fans panicked when they discovered that David O. Russell's take would not have been at all faithful to the beloved series. Now that Burger is no longer attached, it might be a while until Nathan Drake makes his movie debut. As well as three games from Naughty Dog, characters from the franchise recently appeared in a DC Comics miniseries.

First, the writers of National Treasure are hacks. Both movies sucked. Give it to someone like Jon Favreau (he knows how to intertwine action and comedy at the flip of the hat like he did in Iron Man).

Second, you want a good Nathan Drake.

Why not get the guys from Naughty Dog to write it? They do a great job on the games...

Well it's official. This movie has gone down the shithole. @BattlinMurdock get busy writing. @FriendlyJoShFest right on man! The games play like a movie and they completely F'd up my 2nd FAV game franchise of all time. Resident Evil movies suck.

I agree, not EVERY video game should be turned into a movie. Like I said the other day, video game movies need the same treatment as most CBMS that have been released in the past few years.

Ah balls. The games were awesome. For real, get Naughty Dog on the script. You're tellin' me they're gettin the people who wrote Charlie's Angel's and National Treasure to re-write this amazing video game? Ya shattin me? ARE, THERE, NOOO, OTHER, BETTER, WRITERS, IN THE WORLD?!

all three games can be translated to the big screen, especially Amongst Thieves. Like santoanderson says, get the writers from Naughty Dog....and I also could see Matt Bomer as Drake

Good! Let it stay in development hell. And add Halo, God of War and Gears of War to the list of really great games that Hollyweird need to stay away from.

Video game movies fail for either 3 reasons.
1. Some try to adapt the story of the game, instead of instead making the film a prequel, if you try to put an 8-10 hour game into a 2 hour movie then that's going to affect the quality. Make an original story that's takes place in the game's universe. For example the Silent Hill movies. Instead of just using story elements and characters from the games, why not create an original story with a new protagonist that fits into the video game universe. Or make the film a sort of spiritual successor that has the feeling, ideas, and atmosphere of the games. So then they can create new monster designs and the like.

2. They stray too far from the feeling of the games. Resident Evil is more of a straight up zombie action movie now than a legitimately scary movie.

3. Make sure the movie is good movie IN GENERAL. Having the best video game movie isn't that much if a bragging right since the standard is so low. Focus less on trying to include stuff from the game and more time actually making a quality movie.

Directors keep dropping out, because the script isn't good.

I enjoyed the first National Treasure. I also watched *cough* Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle *cough*.

Their writing credits are a bit hit and miss. That makes me concerned for the script, because I want this movie to be great.

I like the idea of Emily Rose reprising her role as Elena and Campbell as Sully...but Fillion as Drake? Seriously?

Maybe ten years ago in his Firefly days, but not now.

The dude who plays Jason Stackhouse on True Blood as Nathan Drake's body frame & movement. No joke.

Thank God!! I thought Mark Wahlberg was going to play as Drake but this is great news!!!
As a die hard fan of these games (the second and third are the best in my opinion) this is something good to hear. But I hope it does not fail just like other movies based on VGs...

So...BRING IT!!!

WHY DO PEOPLE WANT NATHAN FILLION TO PLAY DRAKE! NO WAY IN HELL!!! I WOULD BOYCOT THAT SO FAST!

I never thought of Mat Bomer as Drake, I like it, aswell as Ryan Kwanten... Nathan Fillion in his prime I would suggest it, now he gained alot of weight that I could not see it happening. Honestly if they really want to they should get the cast of the game, each character's appearance is based off the voice actor...

And honestly for Sully I would get Eric Dane he plays Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey's Anatomy.

Goddamnit, just let this project die...! I don't know anybody who actually wants this to happen, and that's not even considering that everything they came up with so far was plain ridiculous.

The games itself are basically movies so yeah i dont really see a point to make them into movie. Of course the movie could have its own new adventure but like someone previously said better get mother[frick]ing amazing writers and amazing director behind it.

I would prefer a fourth game from Naughty Dog thou. That would be hundred times more entertaining!:)

Treasure themes for the fourth game:
Third Crusade / Fight for Jerusalem, Revolutionary War, Aztec treasure or temple / El dorado, Lost Pyramid or Pharaoh´s coffin (something which takes Nathan in Egypt, Atlantis, King Arthur legend, Ancient China dynasties, North Viking treasures, Pirate treasures / Blackbeard legend, Tsingis Khan legend or Ancient Romania / Vlad The Impaler legend (That would bring that cool horror aspect to the story which the first one had)

@JillValenfield Yah, thankfully Mark Wahlberg was dropped as Nathan Drake after David O. Russel left the project. He got the gig, because David and him worked on The Fighter together.

I don't own a PS3(sometimes being a Xbox 360 owner has its drawbacks), so I haven't played the games.

I've heard so many great things about them though. And I love adventurer heroes. I really hope this movie raises the bar for movie based video games.

Seriously the first one was scary occasionally. Those mother[frick]ing cursed zombies crawled under your skin.
Second and Third had the magic side too but they werent that scary.

I'm a huge fan of the games, but damn, I am sick of hearing about this movie. I agree with pretty much everyone else here when I say the games are cinematic and well written enough.
And to all the people saying 'Nathan Fillion!!!'; listen, I love my Captain, but he's too old for this part now.

Great games I've platinumed all of them but I don't think the movie would be any good.
