After years of essentially being stuck in development hell, Sony Pictures' live-action Uncharted movie is finally picking up some serious steam and according to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has given the film a prime holiday release date, slating it to open on December 18, 2020.

Spider-Man: Far From Home star Tom Holland is set to star as the young Nathan Drake while 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg is attached to direct with a script most recently turned in by Jonathan Rosenberg and Mark Walker.

At the moment, Uncharted will open opposite Steven Spielberg's West Side Story and Paramount's Coming 2 America. Disney's Cruella and Universal's The Croods 2 are slated to open the following week.

Why is this site so slow in reporting these news?

@DwightKGroot - Redundant articles, future speculations of franchises, and lists no one asked for take precedence.

How fitting is it that the best Spider-Man actor is also one of the best videogame protagonists of all time.

@knocturnalzen10 -

Very true, even though I did enjoy TOmb Raider, there still hasn't been a great video game movie.

Have high hopes for the upcoming Mortal Kombat.

@SimplyAz - rue the recent tomb raider wasn't horrid ... i actually enjoyed the original MK but i was younger so i think that was more age comparable to it being a qt film.

@SimplyAz - if you play the last few games they've retconned several things , so they have a few options to go with story-line wise . hopefully it's good thanks for the info good sir

@knocturnalzen10 - I'd put Detective Pikachu as "pretty good". I also personally enjoyed Mortal Kombat, but I guess on a technical level, it wasn't especially good.

@knocturnalzen10 - I fear this is gonna be Holland's first real critical failure. Oh well, every actor has one

Tom Holland seems like a weird casting choice to me. You need someone with a bit more self-assuredness for Drake, someone like a Tom Cruise in Risky Business or Top Gun, or like Bradley Cooper or Chris Pine. Nothing I've seen from Holland's really showed that so far. It's better than when Mark Wahlberg was attached, at least.

@tmp3 - Yeah, I like Holland as Spidey and in other movies, but I just can't see him as Drake, not even as young Drake.

This movie might succeed by pure lack of competition.

@TheUnworthyThor - More studios are gonna put films on the Christmas date since Avatar 2 moved. This is probably gonna be the Bumblebee of next year, before some of the bigger films are moved around.

@tmp3 - I’m not so sure about that Sony isn’t going to move anything else there because they won’t want to take away from their own Uncharted. Same with Disney with Cruella. And I don’t know what Universal, Paramount or WB really have move around. Push Dune back a month? Probably not. Try to rush out Mortal Kombat for Christmas release? Probably the wrong fit. It would be cool to see Dungeons and Dragons releases then, sounds like a perfect fit, I don’t think it will be ready though. I don’t know what bigger than Uncharted movie is out there in secret, maybe there is one. The month is actually fairly crowded with big properties, I was really just looking at how they are musicals and kids movie and how only Uncharted (as of now) fills that big spectacle with action need.

I think it's a risky move having Tom Holland as the lead but think they went for him as he is agile and trained.

Fans of the game love the Nathan Fillion Fan Film though, so shows that it can be done.

Although I had forgotten Mark Wahlberg was meant to be Nathan Drake at one point.
