UNCHARTED Movie Is Being Rewritten By AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Producer; Will It Tie Into The Games?

As suspected, the upcoming Uncharted movie will indeed serve as an origin story but just how closely will it connect to the video games? Producer Charles Roven talks about that and some ongoing rewrites.

The Uncharted movie has been in development for a very long time but it's finally starting to take shape with a director in the form of Shawn Levy (Real Steel) and a lead star in Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming). The casting of the Marvel actor came as a surprise to some because he's so much younger than the Nathan Drake from the games but we quickly learned that this will be an origin story.

If you've played pretty much any one of the four PlayStation exclusive adventures revolving around the action hero, you'll know that Nate's origin story has already been well explored but comments from producer Charles Roven (Justice League) point to the movie actually standing apart from those.

"We’ve come up with a wonderful origin story but it’s still based on the Uncharted video game. It doesn’t take place during any of the time period of any of the Uncharted video games. It actually takes place when Nathan Drake (who’s the lead of that game) and Sully, I guess you’d call him his surrogate father, were much younger. It’s an origin story that evolves out of the game but is not from the game. Shawn Levy is going to be directing it and a young writer Rafe Judkins is currently writing the screenplay."

It definitely sounds like the movie will be inspired by the game but not a direct prequel to them as it "evolves out of the game but is not from the game." That makes sense for a lot of reasons and it's interesting that the project is undergoing another rewrite, this time from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. producer Rafe Judkins. Uncharted still has no release date so we'll have to wait and see when it lands.

I don't get it you get called out numerous upon numerous times with those numerous times on top of another set of numerous times for your BS headlines on your articles, yet you still do it- You had me thinking they were getting rid of tom holland and rewriting the movie from scratch. Especially with will it tie into the video game series? Come the [frick] on Wilding you know what you were doing your [frick]ing sick man.

this could be a solid fun adventure.........or a disaster and they should go nuts with the action but without losing the human element

I love Holland but I still don't get his casting. There are dozens of talented actors who fit the part of Nathan Drake & they managed to find one who doesn't. The fact that the only info we know about this (his casting) is something that's pretty different from the games concerns me, but I'm hopeful it'll end up being really good. I love those games, so much potential for a film franchise.

The next video game movie fail in the making. The people behind these always try to recreate the story instead of just making the game into a movie. Do a direct adaptation, or don't do it.

Jeremy Renner for Nathan Drake, though I like the Chris Evans casting as well.

I have a really bad feeling about this movie. I hoped rewritings would mean they would drop the idea of an origin story.
I loved Uncharted games, and I think one of the best things about Nathan Drake is that his past is shady. He presents himself as Sir Francis Drake descendant but even the spectator/player doesn't know if he's lying. We didn't learn a thing about his past before the third game and damn, the second one was a masterpiece. An origin story is not the right way to introduce Nathan, he needs his secrets to be something else than the typical adventure movie hero.

"We’ve come up with a wonderful origin story but it’s still based on the Uncharted video game"... Shouldn't that be the point?

Also, I think George Miller would've been an ideal director for this movie. The Uncharted games all have at least one giant over-the-top action set piece and I think Miller is one of the best at filming those without making them seem laughable.
