Uncharted has all the makings of one of 2022's best blockbusters, though it's still too soon to say whether putting the franchise in the hands of Zombieland and Venom director Ruben Fleischer was a wise choice. There's been a lot of backlash surrounding the decision to cast Mark Wahlberg as Sully, though Tom Holland does appear to be a perfect fit for the role of a younger Nathan Drake.
Total Film recently spoke to the actor about his involvement in finding a director to helm the project.
"Some of [the directors] came in, and had ideas that we didn’t like, that just didn’t fit the characters, and we had to move on to other people. We took inspiration from everyone," Holland recalls. "There were very different variations of Drake, and very different variations of Sully. Some people preferred to make the game, some people wanted to make it completely different to the game. It was an interesting process – one that I wouldn’t like to be in again. It’s quite stressful looking for a director."
We're not sure how they settled on Fleischer, but the filmmaker says he believes it was at least partly due to a long-standing relationship with Sony Pictures that saw him helm Venom and Zombieland: Double Tap back-to-back. "I was firing on all cylinders from a production standpoint," he admits. "I was just really in the rhythm of making movies."
Two new stills from Uncharted have also been released, highlighting Holland as Nate and Sophia Ali as Chloe Frazer. Visually, the movie does look in line with the games, so we're hoping to be surprised.
Uncharted is set to arrive in theaters on February 18. In the UK, it arrives a little sooner on February 11.
