Wonder Woman 1984 is currently filming and the first set photos reveal that Steve Trevor is returning. A potentially reliable source has claimed that the Steve in this movie is in fact the “real” Steve Trevor. There are numerous theories out there on how Steve makes his return. This editorial takes a jab at considering factors that would maximize cinematic appeal to audiences, while embracing specific themes set forth in the first film such as love and time.

One of the more compelling theories is that Steve will return due to his exposure to magical Amazonian water. Director Patty Jenkins has previously implied that the Amazonian bath Steve bathed in will not contribute to his resurrection.

THEORY:
First, let’s acknowledge that the production title for Wonder Woman 1984 is “Magic Hour.” Second, keep in mind that based on the storybook in the first Wonder Woman film, Ares only killed about 10-12 gods- probably depicting to the 12 Olympians.

The assumption is made here that Hades, who is in some versions of Greek mythology not listed as one of the twelve Olympians, was not wiped out by Ares, but simply “out of the picture.” Perhaps Wonder Woman makes a deal with Hades to revive Steve for a “magic hour.” Alternatively, it’s possible that another Greek god with revival powers, such as Asclepius (god of medicine), revives Steve for a “magic hour.”

This could lead to wonderful parallels with the first film. If you recall, there was a sequence in the first film where Steve helped Diana dress “appropriately” for the time/place. In the sequel, it would be Diana who helps Steve dress the part of a 80s fellow. This would certainly explain Steve’s VERY 80s appropriate attire- fanny pack and all!

This could be the set up for a very heartwarming dynamic between the two characters. In the first film, Diana was very much a fish out of water, whereas in the upcoming flick, Steve will take on that role by being misplaced in time. Diana would teach Steve this time around! Notice the ice cream shop in the picture of Steve at the mall. Perhaps Diana can show Steve ice cream in the 80s. This would allow the movie to revisit themes like love and time from the first film and make for a fun time.

This may be way off or there might be other parallels that we can point out as we learn more about the production. Feel free to comment your theories or discuss why you think this theory may be inaccurate. I’d imagine the reason they released those official photos was to get fans speculating!

That's a pretty spurious guess. It wouldn't surprise me if you were on the money. I just hope they make the second one more interesting and explain why she didn't involve herself in WWII...which was the result of WWI.
