NEW MUTANTS Compared To THE SHINING And A Haunted House Movie With Horny Teenagers

The tone of the X-Men movies has never really changed but New Mutants is clearly going to change that in a major way. Not much is known about the spinoff right now beyond the fact that it will delve into a lot of horror elements but 20th Century Fox CEO Stacey Snider has revealed just how different the movie is going to be after she was asked about audiences suffering from superhero fatigue.

Needless to say, it sounds like this will be a very different sort of adventure for Fox's mutants characters and while an R-Rating is never actually mentioned, it definitely sounds like that's a real possibility.

"Great effort has been put into making sure they’re differentiated. New Mutants is about these teenagers who are just coming into their powers. It’s like watching mutants go through adolescence and they have no impulse control, so they’re dangerous. The only solution is to put them in a Breakfast Club detention/Cuckoo’s Nest institutional setting. It protects the people on the outside, but it’s strange and combustible inside. The genre is like a haunted-house movie with a bunch of hormonal teenagers. We haven’t seen it as a superhero movie whose genre is more like The Shining than 'we’re teenagers let’s save the world.'"

So, it sounds like these mutants will be calling an institution of some sort home rather than being in Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. That's a good setting for a horror movie and makes sense when we've heard that New Mutants is being made for a relatively small amount by the frugal studio.

When the movie was first announced, it was widely reported that it would fit into the Young Adult genre but it now seems as if director Josh Boone is heading down a more adult route. How do you guys feel about that and Snider's remarks? As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
