THE NEW MUTANTS Sequel Would Have Included Warlock And Karma; Antonio Banderas Was Cast As The Villain

Entertainment Weekly recently caught up with The New Mutants director Josh Boone, and the filmmaker confirms that before the Disney/Fox merger, his hope was that this would be the first chapter in a trilogy. There have, of course, been rumblings of some sort of Mister Sinister appearance for a while now, but it turns out Boone's plan was actually a lot different.

In a post-credits scene which was never actually shot, Antonio Banderas would have made an appearance as Emmanuel da Costa, the father of Henry Zaga's Roberto. Just like in the comic books, he was set to be a member of the villainous Hellfire Club, and the sequel would have dealt with Sunspot returning to Brazil to reunite with his archaeologist mother, whom Emmanuel is trying to kill.

"We always intended to do New Mutants: Brazil as the second movie," Boone says. "It was intentional that we didn’t shoot it. We had always planned to have a tag at the end of the movie that introduced the villain for the next movie. We even had an actor cast, but because of the merger and because Marvel owns X-Men now and is going to do their own thing, there was no reason to go shoot it." That's not exactly the Mister Sinister tease fans expected or were hoping for!

Still, it definitely had the potential to be cool, and there was lots to look forward to in the sequel.

"Karma was always going to be the villain in the second movie that would be absorbed into the group by the end," Boone explains. "We had always wanted to bring Karma and Warlock into the second one when we couldn’t do it in the first one. For us, we wanted that initial core team [for the first movie]. We just couldn’t swap out Illyana. We felt like there was no reason to do [the movie] if we couldn’t bring that character to life in the first one."

"In our heart of hearts, we hope [The New Mutants] makes a bunch of money so that we can go make the second one," the filmmaker admits while acknowledging that it's unlikely. "We’re all just bummed at everything that happened. Just the merger and everything else. It had nothing to do with us personally and had an impact on every single movie at Fox at the time."

It definitely sounds like Boone had some cool ideas for the franchise moving forward, but the chances of them ever coming to fruition are slim (especially with a pretty dismal predicted opening weekend). With any luck, though, The New Mutants will be a better send-off for the X-Men franchise than Dark Phoenix was!

Yeah and they were planning Dark Phoenix as a two part movie too

Can't wait to see how Feige introduces the Mutants in the MCU

@WakandaTech -
What is certain is that it will be well considered and well planned.

It's actually an enticing idea, but not one I would've wanted to see Fox develop.

Idea isn't bad but Fox might have bungled it. Why not Mr. Sinister? Teased him for nothing I guess.

Boone seems like a humble guy. He realizes his dream trilogy wouldn’t pan out but is grateful for the opportunity to make an X-Men film. He seems like a genuine fan of the source material. I plan on checking out The New Mutants because I’m just curious about the result of the final product.

I think Marvel will introduce mutants into the MCU by way of Deadpool 3. That could establish their place in the universe and an X-Men movie will follow.

@MovieMonster - Boone seems alright. If I was Feige, I would see if he wants to play with the X-Men a bit in the MCU; depending on what exact plans he has.

That trailer alone proved Boone understands Magik on some level.

I wouldn't hate it if this movie was good, they kept these characters and did a trilogy

I'm most curious to find out how they keep Illyana from just teleporting out.

@Reeds2Much -

I'm gonna guess mutant collars of some kind. If not, it will be some far fetched "just go with it" explanation.

I'm guessing no teleportation at all or she develops it later in the film.

@BlackBeltJones - I was guessing that weird IV drip from the trailer or shots of some sort would have something to do with holding back all of their powers. Really, I'll settle for pretty much anything that isn't "Oh, she doesn't have teleport powers."

But did they ever guarantee she would have teleportation powers in the film version or is this something you expect to be there because of the comics?

I wouldn't go int expecting a literal translation from the comic books. I'm sure like many comic films that most of their abilities will differ. Illyana has many abilities outside of teleportation so it's not exactly crucial and removing teleportation from the film is as likely as a 6ft Wolverine, Kitty Pride having time powers, or a venom-less Bane.

As I said, she'll either not have teleportation (as it could break the film), get it near the end, or as Jones said it could be technologically or chemically repressed.

With Hamm as Mister Sinister originally going to be in the post-credits scene, I thought they were going for Banderas as Sinister, which would have been... interesting.

@WeaponXCII - I believe the initial report about Hamm/Banderas said Hamm was Sinister but Banderas in the new post credits was a different character. This report lines up with that pretty well.

Sometimes I hate going on these threads about Fox X-men movies. this site usually just turns them into a MCU/Kevin Feige circle jerk.

@LastAvenger99 - it doesnt really matter the movie. Every article ends up that way. Or at least when they arent complaining about the next button.
