Studio Moving Forward With X-Men: First Class Sequels?

We've heard about Thor 2 and a start date for The Wolverine, but what about a sequel to X-Men: First Class? It seems that internal discussions are going on at the studio. Check it out!

Superhero fans have been waiting to hear where the X-Men franchise is heading next. We know about The Wolverine spin-off starting filming this October, but what about other movies in the pipeline?

X-Men: First Class left the door open for follow-ups if 20th Century Fox chooses to continue the series. And it seems they are talking about where to take it next.

According to the Coventry Telegraph:

We've learned that the studio is "discussing sequels internally." While there is not yet any formal announcement of a follow-up, it does show interest in continuing First Class rather than leaving it as a standalone origin tale. Executives are said to be very pleased with what Matthew Vaughn achieved with the film. It scored an 87 per cent overall rating on the review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes and has, to date, amassed $335million worldwide in just over four weeks on release. The budget is reported as $160million, reduced by tax concessions to about $135m, which has now been recouped from domestic (USA) earnings.

First Class is hands down one of the best CBMs out there. Right next to Thor. Hopefully Vaughn will return for the sequel! Bring it!

Just got my hands on the soundtrack today and it makes me want go watch First Class again.

Granted, it did have some flaws, and I felt that some bit's were a little too 'cartoon-styled' (particularly Angel's powers). But I truly hope Fox continue working with Vaughn as he managed to resuscitate a franchise which was, in my view, dead. As much as i liked wolverine as a kid, i'd rather watch an Xmen movie without Jackman as the main protagonist - heck i wanted more magneto + xavier and less mutants :P

Not to mention they managed to make this little jewel of a cbm in a year or so if i'm not mistaken?

I'd like myself some more Xmen back in the 60's and 70's in 2013!

I think the character choices were largely because they wanted it to be a prequel (even if it doesn't connect all the dots)

The big question is whether they could ignore the existing films now (by bringing in Storm, Cyke, Jean - or re-creating the exact Original Five) and whether the audience would accept it.

To be honest, i don't think the exact line-up matters, it's whether the characters themselves feel right.

Well, of course they're "discussing" it internally... That's nothing like decided to go forward with it. I know we all tiptoe around it, and Green Lantern crashing and burning makes XFC's box office look better, but overall it's been pretty limp as a performer. It's still $100m behind Thor's totals, worldwide. Hopefully it still has another $50m or so in it, otherwise, it's squarely in "Fantastic Four" box office territory, and that can't excite the studio.

They will have to start introducing Scott and Jean, I know they are not big on continuity, but Charles does say at the start of X-Men 1 that Jean and Scott "were SOME of my first students" But who would play them? Beast could leave due to the government "wanting him" that leads into X-Men 3, and Havok could die or something. Banshee could leave, or stay, either way. And introduce a young Storm, I would love, to see something set in Africa with the Shadow King. I also would love Zac Efron and Karen Gillian to play Scott and Jean. And Jennifer Lawrence has her own "headlining" series, The Hunger Games, now, so its doubtful she will return.

I think there is some positivity to be found in them "discussing" sequels. They could just as well have said 'it's too early for any discussions' or something like that, which would be far more negative.

Yes, X-MEN 4 and 5, possibly filmed back-to-back is also announced too!! :-) :-)
From the very same Coventry Telegraph article:

"And producer Lauren Shuler Donner has also revealed that an X-MEN 4 (leading directly into X-MEN 5 and set after 2006's X-Men: Last Stand) is in the pipeline. Nothing more is known about X-Men 4 at present, though the LA Times reported that Shuler Donner had pitched it to Bryan Singer, presumably for him to direct."

As for a First Class sequel, I enjoyed the origin, but I'm not sure how much I want to see Prof X's team fighting Team-Magneto for the upteenth time (even if set in the past)??

I hope with all my heart that once this trilogy is over, that they will make an age of apocalypse movie, lets say anywhere from 2015-2020. They can introduce mister sinister in this next one and then bring on En Sabah Nur

X-men First Class deserves a sequel.. It´s a great movie.. I´ve seen it in Brazil..

I think they have to creat some links now... Like use character like sabertuth,toad, blob, cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm.. even some of this character show up as just kids in the x mansion...

I thin Fox could thing about another X-Men movie, with Storm as leader, Professor X returning and maybe even Fênix... Maybe using Gambit as a "new wolverine" to continue the series..

Any say that they'd better have the original team, yet...? Lol... I personally hope they don't make another. As much as I didn't care for first class, I like vaughn. I just see it as a great film maker given a bad project. They were well onto pre-production before vaughn even signed on. If all the movies are set in the past centered around historic events, then that's just more horrible ideas. Every movie going forward would be like a prequel because we already know how the historic events play out. Boring...

given how it will end earning $350 mil im not surprised,despite the great reviews it didn't really light up the domestic box office but thanks to overseas it did earn a good sum

but now that everything is like in x men it won't be a prequel any more.

Xmen will have to team up with Magneto to fight the Sentinels. They were already in X3 and never introduced. After the Cuban Missle Crisis the government will be afraid of the mutants and create the Sentinels to stop the Xmen.

Even if they did, Marvel won't get round to doing anything with it. Marvel's plate is full with Avengers, Thor, Capt America, Doctor Strange, etc etc.

I'm with @DickMastaFlex I highly doubt Vaughn will return. He'll be signed to it but then he'll quit weeks before filming starts. Then Bryan Singer will take over & gay it up on the director's seat.

Xmen was the cbm movie of the year, THor was great but damn did Xmen blow me away, poor DC. They made the Dark Knight, then turned around released a pile of shit like Green Lantern. tsk.tsk.

Don't forget that Prof X was resurrected right after the end credits of X3, as witnessed by Moira.

Also, I never thought that Cyclops was dead for a minute, you know, with the off-screen disappearance and no dead body etc (Maybe a time-traveller swooped by??)

I think the X-Men 4 + 5 news is great - I think they should get an older actress to play Moira in the present though.

Shadow King for the main villain for the sequel. With Prof X team & Magneto team in an uneasy alliance. Probably ending with Prof X & Magneto finally becoming "enemies"

I totally agree with Videogameboy. FC was great - I want a sequel, preferably one that breaks away from the original movies a bit. Don't jump right into a bald Prof. X. Focus on bringing in Cyke and JG and forming a 'real' team. And lose the gay leather. The militaristic blue and yellow was sooo much better. And just to clarify, X-Men 3 was an effing abomination. period. One of the worst CBMs of all time.
