The REAL problem with the Apocalypse design

The REAL problem with the Apocalypse design

I know i'm late on this, but I don't think no one has realized the true problem (or you have, and I just didn't notice).

JULY 11, 2015

During Comic-Con weekend, director Bryan Singer posted the first poster for the highly anticipated X-MEN: APOCALYPSE! Many fans loved this poster as it gave us our closest look to Apocalypse (or En Sabah Nur) at the time. After many casting rumours (Tom Hardy, The Rock, etc.), critical darling Oscar Issac was cast. What was even better was knowing they were using practical effects. Plus after DoFP, fans loved the Fox/Marvel universe again. People were excited for this. They were excited for Deadpool (hasn't changed a bit), Channing Tatum was set to play Gambit (that changed, but for just two days), and more and more people were finally getting excited for the Fantastic Four reboot (Oh God, did that change). And with Apocalypse on the way, fanboys had complete faith in Fox for the X-Men films.

FIVE DAYS LATER...

Me:
Why is everyone so upset?
Random Person: The first look at Oscar Issac as Apocalypse.
Me: I'm sure it's not that ba...

...

Me:

Me: Really though, show me the design that can't be the real thing.
Random Person:

Me: Well, at least it looks a bit like the comics if you look close enough. I'm sure it will get better with time.

ALMOST TWO MONTHS LATER...

THE DESIGN IS STILL STUPID! (Although, not as stupid as Doom). And I never gave my two cents on it, so here I go. I've seen complaints about Apocalypse, but all of them I've seen talk about the same two things:

1. HIS SKIN IS TOO LIGHT.
2. HE LOOKS NOTHING LIKE THE COMICS.

Now before I talk about my problem with his design, I want to talk about these two complaints. First, his skin is too light. In the comics, he usually a bit of gray, a bit of dark blue. He was dark. But the REAL reason people have is that his skin is such a light shade of blue, that he looks like Ivan Ooze. Second, he looks nothing like the comics. Now, this is not entirely true. If you look closely, you can see his helmet, and the blue lines that go through his mouth. Although if they went with the comics look one of two ways:

IT WOULD LOOK COOL IN LIVE-ACTION...

OR SILLY...

(JUST NOT AS SILLY AS FANT4STIC'S DOOM)

Anyway, while these are legit problems to have. There is one problem that no one has addressed...

THE TRUE PROBLEM WITH THE DESIGN IS...
THE EYES!

I know, it sounds dumb. Just here me out. That fact that they gave him human eyes was dumb. He doesn't look like something with god-like powers. The eyes just make him look like a normal guy with blue facepaint. As seen in the pictures above, they could have given him blank eyes (which would look badass), and or red eyes (which would also look badass). Oh wait, they DID give red eyes. Only it just looks like he didn't get enough sleep.

However, Oscar Issac is a great actor and i'm not letting this design get in the way. After all, Heath Ledger was also a great actor and people were furious when they first saw his offical look at the Joker. He ended up being the second person to win an Oscar for acting after his death!

So, let's look past this design and admire this fan-art of Issac as a dark-skinned, blank eyed Apocalypse!

I have no idea who did this, so I can't give that person credit, but I don't care, because this is badass.

Nice article man.I honestly never really thought about the eyes, but they are indeed the worst part about the design.Btw that fan-art is pretty badass and terrifying at the same time!

Even though it might not be his final design it looks lame, as something that you will have to see on screen, as Apocalypse has always been intimidating.

You might be right be right about the eyes, and I wonder why no one has done the blank eyes yet?

The irony of this article and the fact that you have DOFP Quicksilver as your avatar.

I agree so much. his eyes are ridiculous. Should be glowing pupil-less whitish blue eyes. He looks sorta sad and pathetic in the pic all because of his eyes.

He probably will have whited eyes by the movie's release. His eyes are whited on the poster, it's just pain for actors to wear contacts during shoots, so it'll probably done in post.

The problem with his eyes is that eyes show humility. Like a shark- blank soulless eyes alienate you from the character. His eyes make him look less menacing because the eyes. For me however, the problem is his stature. His silhouette isn't menacing. He's smaller than the GOD DAMN JUGGERNAUGHT! Make his like 15 feet tall. This is a fundamental problem with his design because it takes away from his character, and makes his less imposing both physically and psychologically (because he's not as intimidating).
