Logan is a really good superhero movie, but given the way its placed far in the future of the X-Men Unvierse's convoluted timeline, we perhaps should have expected it to be surrounded by unanswered questions. As the movie kicks off, we don't really know how Wolverine has got to this point, and over the course of two hours, not too many answers about that or any other queries are provided.
Looking back over the movie, it's fair to say that it features a lot of unanswered questions which could be deemed frustrating, and what you'll find here is a breakdown of the six biggest examples.
From the lack of Mr. Sinister and Essex Corp. to the future of X-23 and Wolverine himself, we delve into all of Logan's biggest plot holes and unresolved threads here, attempting where we can to even provide some answers. With no sequel on the way, most of these will probably never be resolved, but there's at least a chance that the X-Men Universe could still address them in some form...
6. What Exactly Happened To The Rest Of The X-Men?
Logan reveals that Professor X killed at least seven of the X-Men when his mind started deteriorating and his psychic powers were unleashed and it's no doubt that which led to him being deemed a weapon of mass destruction. However, what the movie doesn't address is how exactly those mutants died when the hundreds of civilians similarly affected did not. Why were there so few members of the X-Men left when that tragedy happened anyway?
Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters was crammed full of mutants when we saw it at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past, and while it's possible this event led to them disbanding, the talk of mutants being so few and far between makes that seem unlikely. Perhaps Zander Rice's genetic manipulations can be blamed for that, but it would have been nice to get some clarification and learn what the fate of mutants like Cyclops and Jean Grey was.
5. Is Caliban Going To Return?
Before he's gunned down by Wolverine, Zander Rice requests that the charred remains of Caliban are kept in order to use them to presumably create a clone with his abilities to track down his fellow mutants. Was that a tease for him to show up somewhere down the line? The character has gone through many iterations over the years, though he at one point took on the monstrous form you see above.
He'd fit in well in X-Force for example as a minion of Mr. Sinister's, and while Stephen Merchant wouldn't necessarily have to return to the role (understandable, but a shame considering how great he was), this could be an interesting way to link Logan to whatever comes next in the X-Men Universe. Whether or not it will happen remains to be seen, but this movie definitely appeared to leave Caliban's future open in a very deliberate way despite the fact that he pretty much blows himself up during the final act.
4. Will Wolverine's Healing Factor Save Him?
Logan makes it clear that the Adamantium covering Wolverine's bones is poisoning him, with his healing factor feeling the brunt of that. By the time he's been slashed half to death by X-24 and impaled on a tree branch, it's clear that the hero may have gone through too much to come back from, but it's not all that hard to imagine it could somehow kick back in and slowly resurrect him, leading to Wolverine clawing his way out of that grave.
That leaves the door open to Hugh Jackman being able to return, but perhaps that's just wishful thinking on my part! I also cant't help but wonder if X-24 is really dead and gone. That Adamantium bullet blew half of his head off, but could his brain and skull grow back? Probably not seeing as he relied on a serum to heal, but I can't help but wonder if the character's healing factor could play into Logan one day showing up in X-Force or even a future Deadpool movie.
3. What's Waiting Up North For The Young Mutants?
After finding Eden, it becomes clear that X-23 and the young mutants have been told that they must travel across the border into Canada in order to remain safe. Is that because it's independent from the United States, a country which has cracked down on mutants, or is there something/someone waiting for them there? It's recently been reported that an Alpha Flight movie is in the works, so perhaps the answer lies there, but I definitely feel like this is a plot point which will be touched on down the line.
These kids can't just wind up in Canada and make a life for themselves, so someone must be waiting for them and this is something pretty much any future movie can address and that might be why James Mangold was deliberately vague with the specifics. Still, it's frustrating that we don't get any solid answers about what's next for the young mutants and what exactly they're hoping to find up North!
2. Why Didn't Logan Just Kill Professor X?
As Professor X killed the X-Men and nearly hundreds of civilians, it's genuinely quite surprising that Logan didn't just kill the failing mutant as he started losing control of his powerful mind. After all, he didn't hesitate to take out his great love Jean Grey in X-Men: The Last Stand, so why not do the same to Charles? There are any number of reasons we could just assume were the case, but the movie fails to provide any solid answers and it's almost like Xavier is just here to service the plot and nothing more.
That's not a complaint about his role here, but it would not have hurt Logan to delve further into this. My theory is that Wolverine just couldn't bring himself to do it, hence why he wanted to take his mentor out to sea until his death and then blow his brains out to finally bring his hard life to a close. What a depressing thought, eh? Either way, Wolverine does eventually take him out...well, a Wolverine clone, that is!
1. Where's Mr. Sinister And Essex Corp.?
It needs to be addressed in some form, that's for sure, and Sinister being revealed as the man who was indirectly responsible for the death of Wolverine would make him a bad guy fans will hate from the very start. It's a real shame that Logan never even mentioned Essex Corp., but with Cable set to be introduced a little further down the line in the X-Men Universe, this is one question may well be answered. One day.
