Director Matthew Vaughn has spent the past few years adapting properties created by comic book writer Mark Millar, but he was responsible for putting a fresh spin on Marvel's mutants with 2011's X-Men: First Class. While he was set to return for the sequel, X-Men: Days of Future Past ended up in Bryan Singer's hands and the franchise once again headed down a familiar path.
Talking to ComicBook.com about The King's Man, Vaughn revealed that he'd be interested in returning to the Marvel Universe to put a fresh spin on Wolverine.
"[To] cast the young Wolverine [in a] reboot...that would be fun. It could go in such a different direction where Hugh [Jackman] took it as well," the filmmaker said. "I think Hugh knocked it out of the park but I think out of all of the X-Men that's the character that I get drawn to. Yeah, Wolverine."
As for who he'd choose to take on the role of James "Logan" Howlett, Vaughn added: "Well, he's got older now, but I would say Tom Hardy would have been awesome. I think Taron [Egerton] could do it in his sleep. Aaron Taylor-Johnson could do it as well. I mean, I think Aaron or Taron would be my first two choices could do it really well."
Taylor-Johnson, who played Quicksilver for Marvel Studios and is now set to portray Kraven the Hunter in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, is probably an unlikely choice. Egerton, on the other hand, remains a fan-favourite pick for the role and Vaughn is arguably right that he'd knock it out of the park.
Vaughn plans to helm a Kingsman 3 next, while he also recently revealed that a Kick-Ass reboot is on the way. That could close the door on him potentially joining the MCU for now, though the director has maintained an interest in the superhero genre (even being eyed to tackle Superman at one point).
