X-MEN Star Hugh Jackman Weighs In On Possible WOLVERINE Return In The MCU... And It Doesn't Sound Good

There's been a lot of speculation online that Hugh Jackman could reprise the role of Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but asked about a possible return, the actor put the matter to rest...

Hugh Jackman has been doing the rounds to promote his new sci-fi movie Reminiscence and, as you might expect, he's been fielding questions about a possible return as Wolverine.

While the actor has made it clear he's moved on from the role quite a few times in the past (especially after Logan), there have been rumours about a possible return. The creation of the MCU's version of the Multiverse has only served to fuel speculation, with a cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness perhaps the most popular theory.

Talking to Screen Rant, Jackman said Wolverine "[is] in my past," adding: "I don’t ever want people to feel that when I say I’m done, it’s a glib thing. It was one of the great chapters of my life."

In a separate conversation with Jake's Takes, the actor went one step further when asked about recent rumours. "Well, the fact, Jake, that I'm hearing about this from you and there's nothing in my inbox from Kevin Feige means it's probably, no matter what idea I came up with, not on the table," Jackman stated. "Let's be clear there."

"I realized before we shot Logan, we got the idea, we knew what it was going to be, and I thought this is it and that really helped me. It really helped to know I was going into my last season when it was my last season, and I made the most of it," he continued. "And it's still a character I hold close to my heart, but I know it's done. Tell that to whomever you want, but please tell it to Ryan [Reynolds] because he doesn't believe it and he thinks I'm joking."

This is disappointing, but not totally unexpected.

Wolverine is bound to be a big part of whatever Marvel Studios has planned for the X-Men franchise, so casting a younger actor makes the most sense to ensure the clawed mutant is around for the long haul. Following in Jackman's footsteps won't be easy, but the hero deserves a big screen return.

As it should be. His wolverine died in Logan. Leave him to rest.

@SonOfAGif -

I get that he did a great job but as many of us have been saying, there's no way Feige would bring FOX-Men into the MCU proper. The franchise was a quality rollercoaster as it is, and if given the opportunity rebooting would be the smarter move.

I don't even believe Patrick Stewarts comments about turning done a shot at playing the MCU Professor X. He's saving face because a recast is imminent. If he was offered anything it would be in Deadpool 3 which will only be comedically connected to the MCU.

Props to Jackman and Stewart, though. They was great choices even if the material let them down from time to time. At least they went out on a high note!

Should never happen, he had the perfect send off.

Too bad Tom Hardy is Venom, he would have been a perfect Wolverine.

He was also Mathew Vaughn's choice when he was going to do a First Class trilogy

@dracula - I love Jackman and he was my favorite exposure to Wolvie, so I'll always love him for that, but I think now it's time for a short Wolverine. Short representation matters!!!

@Whaley87 - How does he keep getting a pass? He comes in here, uses profanity, and calls everyone racist because they want a short Wolverine.....

And I won't even try to guess how wanting a character's height to be accurate to the comics is racist lol.

Logan was as close to perfect as it gets. The man did us good. He's entitled to say when.

@Pigdango - I wonder if they’ll start adding X-Men to the title…

Avengers/X-Men: Forever. Or, Eternal. Eternal would be pretty badass

The poor guy. I know he loves the role but I remember reading once that he said the training or getting into shape to play Wolverine was getting harder and harder as he aged. Not sure he wants to go through all that again, but then anything is possible and he just may get a call from Kevin after all.

@Mugens - to be fair, "getting in shape" changed radically from movie to movie... sometimes he was super cut and other times not even close... so i imagine on those times he was super cut he was on a dietary restriction, etc which really pushed on top of extensive physical training.

Not good? Thats the best news possible. People always say he is irreplaceable, but they replaced ian mckellan and patrick stewart in this franchise, with younger versions, and at least one of the replacements was arguably better than the original. Hugh jackman may have been one of the very few things that worked in that franchise, but its obviously time to move on and start something new, it makes 0% sense to bring jackman back, and its 100% obvious feige likes crafting this universe in HIS image, not fox’s
