Hugh Jackman Says The Wolverine Will Be Filled With Rage; Will Have Less Focus On Other Characters

The Real Steel actor talks more about what to expect from his next outing as The Wolverine, saying that it'll be simpler than X-Men Origins and it'll go more into the character...

Speaking with The Guardian newspaper while promoting Real Steel, Hugh Jackman - perhaps best known for his role as Wolverine in the X-Men films - says The Wolverine will be much simpler than 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, saying that it won't have as many characters (he believes that the main flaw was that it had too many characters). He also reveals that the film goes more into the character, and that they have the chance to 'nail the character', which Jackman believes hasn't been done yet.

"I think we've got the chance to nail the character this time, to do the hole-in-one. We haven't managed that yet. On the last movie, we complicated it with too many other characters. And there'll be more women this time, which is good. The last one was so masculine!

"The new film will go more into the character. I don't think we've ever seen his rage expressed properly. We're letting go with this one of the whole, 'Who am I? Where did I come from? Oh no, I've lost my memory,' thing. I feel like that's sent us all to sleep. 'Yeah, whatever pal. We're bored! Fine, you were a sushi chef, whatever it was, can we just get on with the story now?'"

Starring Hugh Jackman, James Mangold's The Wolverine is set to begin production next spring, possibly for a 2013 release.

Glad to hear it. But...it gets said every time. They've had four movies to "nail" his persona.

@Intruder: Yeah, Aronofsky was this films savior. The only thing keeping me going with support is that Jackman said they would hardly be changing the script Aronofsky turned in. Hope he is right, Wolverine needs justice for the last two shit st

I think Aronofsky would have been a game winner. I guess the reason I have faith in this is because it must have had a script attached to it that Aronofsky was interested in. This could be a tone changer for Wolverine. Let's hope that this enthusiasm from Jackman for this installment isn't just hype again. Let's hope it's enthusiasm for a credible piece of work that will give such a great character some notoriety

There was no problem with there being many characters. The problem is that the movie needs to make sense. Come on! memory erasing bullets, wolverine is Canadian while fighting for wars that America was involved in, and volunteering for the weapon x program in order to get revenge against saber tooth. I bet all we'll get is another watered down story involving over the top action.

^^^Then they need a movie titled after them; this is is a Wolverine movie, so it should focus on him- this is not an X-Men titled movie.
Jackman go berserker just once in this new flick...please, for the fanboys!

Wolverine is one of my favorite marvel characters.... He has been misrepresented for years on film. Hugh Jackman is an overactor and I don't buy his Wolverine. I would love to see someone else get a shot to play him, but I guess since that won't happen this is the best news I could hope for

@DannyRand401 I agree, the script must've been good if it could attract a legit director like Aronofsky. If everything that Jackman's been saying about The Wolverine is true, then it could very well be the best X-Men/Wolverine film to date (not counting First Class). Besides, after FC I'm interested in seeing Fox churn out more CBMs (mainly X-Men; they should give up Fantastic Four and eventually Daredevil).

We've all heard this promise many times before from Hugh, but I do think that this time they'll get it right BUT I do also feel it'll be Jackman's last Wolverine portrayal. I doubt he'll return for more.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine should never have been made in the first place. The Japanese saga is the film Hugh Jackman originally wanted to make, but Fox decided that a prequel was necessary to explain Wolverine's origins to the audience. Stupid Fox dumbass mistake number one. We already knew more or less how Wolverine got his claws from the flashbacks in X1 & X2 - any more exposition should have been left in flashback, not cobbled into a pointless new film that did nothing that interesting with the Weapon X programme.

Yeah, that is the problem; in all four films we already know a lot about his character. I think the only way to get Wolverine's character right is the same way they did him in the early comics; not go into full details on his character and origin, and just have him be all badass and stuff. Admitly, that was already done with X-Men First Class; now lets see him as a secondary character instead of main for once in a while!

"The last one was too masculine." WTF are you talkin about Hugh?! Yeah what we need is a more FEMININE wolverine movie! I like Hugh Jackman, but he is all wrong for Wolverine. It doesn't matter how much he 'loves the character'.
