Wolverine Doesn't Live Up to its Hype

Marvel has been hyping up movies coming out over the next few years, and if Wolverine is a preview, I'm not impressed.

This past weekend I finally had the opportunity to see Wolverine. I had wanted to see it the second it came out for so many reasons – Gambit and Deadpool being among the biggest. I didn’t get to see it until Saturday, though, and I feel the extra day of anxiety could well have been spent on something else. It’s not that Wolverine was bad. I think the hype that it had gotten was a bit exaggerated. The story (for those of you who don’t know) revolves around how Wolverine became the character of such popularity that he is today. And I feel that was one of the biggest shortcomings of the film. There was no plot other than that. Point A led to point B which led to point C and so on, but there was never really any overlying story. They contented themselves with “this is where he came from.” Another problem I had was Gambit. Maybe I’m being a bit of a fanboy here, but three of the major things that make his character so unique were missing. His eyes. They’re supposed to be black with red irises. Always. And they were just regular eyes. And he had no accent. Well, not one that really counts. Where’s the French Southern accent that makes girls swoon? That makes guys go “Dang, I wish I talked like that”? And most importantly – one of the reasons that they hadn’t written him into the X-men plotlines earlier was that they viewed his character as too similar to Wolverines. The one similarity that they really needed to keep, though, was that he is an independent soul. That’s one thing that he, Wolverine, and Deadpool have in common that makes it possible to have them have stand alone movies. They fight alone at least as often as they fight in teams, but they used him almost strictly as an aid to Wolverine. I did really like Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. The voice he used, his look, his demeanor. Excellent. I feel he wasn’t used enough in the movie as the merc with the mouth, though. He had only a few witty quips, and then he was gone. Oh, and remind me – does Deadpool have Cyclops blast? My last complaint is that some of the CGI was not as good as in the first few X-men movies even. It wasn’t a bad movie, but it’s easy for me to spot the bad when I was expecting it to be amazing and it was only average. Step it up, Marvel. You’re better than that and I expect you to prove it.

The acting was really good for the most part, but the lack of plot alone drops the score. It could have been amazing, but Marvel came out with an average three dot worthy movie...
