The Wolverine stand-alone movie moved closer to reality today with the signing of Troy screenwriter David Benioff to pen the film.

20th Century Fox inked the deal with Benioff with the understanding that X-Men star Hugh Jackman would reprise his role as the berserker mutant, Variety said.

The film will likely be produced by X-Men producers Lauren Shuler Donner and Avi Arad, the trade says.

Benioff says he's a fan of the character and the comic.
