X-MEN: James McAvoy Shares One Key Franchise Criticism And Whether He's Heard From Marvel Studios

X-Men star James McAvoy has reflected on his time as Professor X, sharing his disappointment with a specific creative decision and revealing whether he's heard about a role in Avengers: Secret Wars...

James McAvoy was faced with a mammoth task when he joined the cast of X-Men: First Class as a young Professor X, though he did the role - and Sir Patrick Stewart - justice. Despite having some hit-and-miss material to work with, the actor proceeded to knock it out of the park in X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and even Dark Phoenix.

Following the Disney/Fox merger, the actor's time as Charles Xavier appears to have ended, and in a recent interview with GQ, he called his tenure as the X-Men leader "one of the most positive experiences I've had with a studio." He'd add, "I don't really [see them as just] money gigs. Days of Future Past I think is one of the better films that I've been involved in."

Despite having fond memories of the experience, McAvoy would also share a brief complaint.

"My biggest criticism of what we did throughout the four movies was that after the first movie, we didn't take advantage of the relationship between [Xavier and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto], which really formed the backbone of the first film. So it was like, why did we just eject that massive weapon?"

X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn decided to play with that dynamic, but when Bryan Singer returned to the franchise, he shifted focus back to characters like Wolverine and Mystique. As a result, it fell by the wayside as the series continued, with all those time jumps doing little to help matters.

Stewart recently got to reprise the role of Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, so does McAvoy now anticipate returning to pick up where he left off? "I'm very quick to say, ‘No, I'm done.’ Or ‘I'm not that bothered about coming back,"" he admits. "Because you move forward."

As for whether Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has come calling about Avengers: Secret Wars, the actor says, "I’ve definitely not got the call. And if I did I would definitely not be telling you."

Read into that as you will, but something tells us McAvoy isn't saying goodbye to this character quite yet. If nothing else, we have to believe he and other actors from this era of storytelling will appear either in Deadpool 3 or the next two Avengers movies as a way of finally saying goodbye to Fox's X-Men Universe.

@bobevanz - the cringy part is she says that line so seriously but it’s literally how the scripts are written, women are always written to save the men. Feminists have always been attacking men for years and we are expected to not point it out and accept it.

@Matchesz - To be fair, even in the X-Men comics, with the exception of a few, the most powerful mutants are the women, generally speaking. (Xavier, Iceman, and Cable are powerhouses, but when it comes to the males, most are only mediocre power levels. And I'm not talking characters like Elixir or Proteus who never go fight.)

During Chris Claremont's run Jean/Phoenix saved their asses so many times it's not even funny. Because she was just so powerful that not even the usually overpowered villains could stand up to her.

Storm is obviously insanely powerful with no real limit to her powers.

Psylocke has done things that almost none of the males can contend with.

Polaris is a slightly weaker Magneto, although she should technically be able to do anything he does.

Monet, who is basically itching to become Omega Level any minute

Hope Summers

Emma Frost

And all of these females have saved the day several times.

@Matchesz - That's not even accurate and is random and out of place, as far as I remember.

I hate to admit, and you secretly know it to be true, these are simply money gigs. Nothing more, nothing less

@bobevanz - In at least his first two, there was real acting work on display. Not just the would-be “money gig”.

@MosquitoFarmer - Yes. Days of Future Past is the superior film overall, but Xavier and Magneto's story and relationship in First Class is top notch. Kevin Bacon was great too. It's unfortunate that the team members themselves as well as the members of the Brotherhood were so underwhelming. What could have been an all-time best X-Men movie was mixed.

@dracula - the lack of care was evident in XM:A and XM:DP. Continuity was where the FoxMen were most comic book accurate

He was in one of the most underrated comic book movies in my opinion.

Wanted is much better than you remember.

@DarthOmega - It's a crime to even call Wanted by that name. Is it a good movie? Maybe. But it's a terrible WANTED movie.

DarthOmega - 11/28/2022, 3:58 PM
@CorndogBurglar - Terrible? Come on man. That might be too far. Is it a masterpiece? By no means. But I thought it was dope

CorndogBurglar - 11/28/2022, 4:05 PM
@DarthOmega - Have you read the WANTED series? It couldn't be any different. If you walked into a room and someone was watching the movie, you would have no idea it was a WANTED adaptation.

So I stand by what I said. Not a bad movie on its own. But it's a terrible WANTED movie.

@CorndogBurglar - I actually never read the comics. I just enjoyed the film
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 11/28/2022, 4:41 PM
@DarthOmega - Got it. So imagine that when they made the MCU they decided not to have any superheroes in it. They were just going to adapt stories from the comics but replace the Superheroes with normal people that could curve bullets from guns.

That's literally what WANTED the movie is.

@CorndogBurglar - It's a good thing I didn't read the comics. Although I enjoyed Watchmen the film more than the comic. I felt the changes were necessary

Both Stewart and McAvoy were excellent despite the material not being so much. However generations of movie goers believe Charles is English when he is a New Yorker in actual canon. While not absolutely essential, I would like to see him portrayed as such. MCU

It only was starting in the Apocalypse film that they stopped fleshing out further the dynamic between their characters, I thought that in DoFP they still got room to play against each other especially since Charles had to help break out Magneto from the Pentagon which led to a lot of bad blood to start to flood back between them which was good.

It would be nice if he could reprise the role for Secret Avengers.

Off-topic: Tomorrow releases the new JSA comic book issues from Geoff Johns, thought that it would be nice if an article about it could be made since I've seen more than once the same be done for the Marvel comics events.

"THE JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #1

A long-lost hero from the JSA crashes into our era with a grave warning…but it’s too late. A mysterious and malevolent enemy has invaded the entire history of the JSA, and an all-new team must come together to defeat it. But what deadly secret does this messenger from beyond keep? @ObserverIO - Yeah this place could use more of it and these titles from Johns were actually announced back in mid August so they've been waiting for a while.
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 11/29/2022, 12:16 AM
@Reeds2Much - That must be due to him writing that Flashpoint Beyond story focused on Batman trying to unravel some mysteries from Flashpoint which is what set up these new titles for the JSA and the continuation from last year's Stargirl Spring Break Special, The Lost Children.

He also will work in adapting another of his comics from Image Comics called Geiger for Paramount+ and act as showrunner for the 2nd time. The people at Paramount TV must've liked a lot what he did in Stargirl to trust him with this. And obviously he's been busy since 2018 with said passion project, until this tone deaf cancelation that only can come from soulless suits. Thankfully the fanbase is fighting back for it's rightful revival.

Of all the XMen casting decisions...Fassbender was 100% the GOAT.

I don't imagine he'll want to return but I'd love to see more of his Magneto, more unleashed like he was in DoFP.
