Can Fox's X-MEN Go To The Savage Land?

X-Men: Apocalypse producer Hutch Parker answers whether 20th Century Fox's deal with Marvel Studios allows the X-Men to use Ka-Zar and travel to the Savage Land or if this is another Scarlet Witch/Quicksilver case - where Fox and Marvel share the rights.

The X-Men cinematic universe is ever-expanding, getting more and more ambitious with each successful release from director Bryan Singer. Deadpool looks to be a smash hit, there's a solo Gambit film in the works and Hugh Jackman remains adamant that there's still one more, solo Wolverine tale to be told.  Then there's the also films for the New Mutants and X-Force in development as well.  However, there's one area of X-Men lore that's yet to be touched.   When asked on the set of X-Men: Apocalypse if the X-Men could ever travel to the Savage Land, producer Hutch Parker admitted that he actually....doesn't know.  Unless he's playing coy, whatever Fox is planning for the X-Men cinematic universe, it sounds like the Savage Land won't be used.

“To be totally honest, I don’t know. I don’t know, and I kind of should because of my time at the studio, but it’s a pretty carefully cataloged thing and once we get our head down into stories, and we are into a bunch of them, that’s where my attention goes. I haven’t gone back to check but now that you’ve asked the question, I shall.”

X-Men: Apocalypse arrives in theaters on May 27, 2016.

Victory for Marvel Studios!

@Bullseye

Unfortunately, yeah. FOX refuses to use the 90% of the things they own for some reason ....and yet they don't want to share them with Marvel?

They don't have to share anything with Marvel Studios because they own the rights to these characters. Sure they let them play with Wanda and Pietro but I have a feeling that's as far as it will go.

It might be shared....

I wish Marvel had Kang because more than likely FOX isn't going to use him

SN: Should the X-Men movies really be referred to as a cinematic universe? It should be X-Men Cinematic World....

LOL! I am not sure if you are being sarcastic....on the win for Marvel remark.

I am not sure how this is a win.....when Marvel cannot even use the term X-Men.....nor use any X-Men that are not directly associated with The Avengers.

I would love to see the Savage land in Drew Goddards Sinister Six film, his script sounded nuts. And if he ever gets Tom Hardy as sandman like he wanted then I guess the script would be "[frick]ing alley" as he so elegantly puts it. But seriously, the dude's a talented writer and I feel bad, he left directing the Martian(which was praised to no end, but he did write the script) and then he left showrunning Daredevil, another of his scripted work that was taken over and received non stop praise, only to be halted in his tracks when spidey returned to the MCU, the place that he left for Sinister six. The dude has some bad luck, but if he gets to do an MCU sinister six, then hey, that's better than a sony sinister six, and we all win big. That's IF people even want to see this, I sure as hell do.

If the Fantastic four rights go back to marvel, then we can see Kang in the MCU

Unfortunately, Fox owns a lot of important characters that would fit well within the MCU, especially the cosmic side of Marvel and FF.

The X-Men movies are so wrote at this point that I don't think they would even attempt to incorporate the Savage World. Waiting for a total reboot of this franchise.

There is zero reason to even ask that question. None of the X-Men Savage Land stories are screenworthy, and Ka-Zar is much older than the Kirby's X-Men. He's even older than Batman and not originally a marvel creation, so there are surely some legal roadblocks.

Hey there mate! I remember that you are big fan of Attack on Titan so I think this might interest you!

The Titans look creepy as hell, specially the "little titans"

Singer has done great work but I don't think he wants to explore the more fantastical elements of the X Men. We need to see Genosha and Asteroid M among other things

We need more of an embracing of the classic comic book elements and locales. X men mythology is so broad; a lot more so than what the films have explored.

We've barely seen the extensive rogues gallery

I mean the xmen have a [frick]ing cosmic mythology too with the Shi'ar

This kinda pisses me off. The Savage Land could be a great X-men movie. I cant believe it took this long for someone to mention it. Fox has still yet to touch on the full potential of the X-Men franchise.

I doubt Fox has the rights to Ka-Zar. Despite him being introduced in an early issue of X-Men, the character has an entire history outside of that team. Also, he isn't a mutant so he doesn't fall naturally under the Fox license. So this should also eliminate the Savage Land and Zabu too since both would be inclusive to who owns Ka-Zar. Consider Ka-Zar, like Inhumans and Black Panther is to Fantastic Four, and Alpha Flight is to X-Men, that just because the character or characters were introduced in a particular comic -doesn't put them automatically into the same film license.

Now there are "mutates" in the Savage Land and they do have a connection to Magneto. However, back in 1993, I doubt Marvel and Fox were that specific in the license to include "mutates" alongside the common term "mutants". If Marvel had the foresight to see the problems they would have with Fox, they wouldn't had given that studio exclusive rule over the term "mutant" -and just kept to specific characters actually on the team. Anyhow, I don't believe any "mutate" character was ever on the X-Men so its a moot point to speculate. Fox shouldn't have any claim to anything involving the Savage Land and Ka-Zar.

BTW, I doubt any producer at Fox who has access to the list of Marvel characters in their license wouldn't already know the answer to if they can use a particular character. If they don't then I definitely wouldn't want them handling the property.

Yeah, I know they own the rights to the characters. Fox might also share some rights to that particular story. And then there might be an issue if Bob Byrd's family wants a piece of the action. He was the original creator of Ka-Zar. Goodman kept the copyright and gave it to Stan and Jack to play with.

They might not have Ka-Zar but I'd be pretty shocked if they didn't have the rights to Savage Land.

@ManCalledSting

Sauron has an extensive history and affiliation with the X-Men so I wouldn't be surprised that Fox can use him as a villain. Also, there is a possibility Fox could create their own fictionalized version of the Savage Land to do a story with Sauron. I just doubt they can use the term "Savage Land" as the rights to that name should be tied exclusively to Ka-Zar.

The question would be IF Fox created their own "Savage Land" could Marvel Studios sue Fox for copyright infringement based on similarities to a property they own. Fox Studios took Marvel Entertainment to court back in 2001 when Marvel was marketing "Mutant X" saying it infringed on their movie rights use of the word "mutant".
