Nicholas Hoult Says X-MEN: APOCALYPSE "Goes Extreme" And Oscar Isaac Is A "Badass"

Hit the jump and check out the latest from Nicholas Hoult as the English actor talks more about returning as Hank McCoy aka Beast in X-Men: Apocalypse, the 1980s costumes, as well as Oscar Isaac's performance as En Sabah Nur for which he offers nothing but praise.

When Nicholas Hoult sat down with IGN to promote his new comedy thriller Kill Your Friends, the English actor talked more about reprising his X-Men: Days of Future Past role as Hank McCoy aka Beast in X-Men: Apocalypse, the 1980s costumes, and Oscar Issac's performance. First Class was the first time we went back in time with the younger cast,” he said. Days of Future Past dealt with time displacement and all that sort of thing, and blended casts. And this one I think is just going to be pretty huge in many ways. It’s set in the ‘80s. Introducing younger versions of Cyclops and Jean Grey and Storm and those characters so you get a bit of a back story to those guys. And then Apocalypse – Oscar Isaac – turns up and is a badass and it all goes quite extreme.”

How often did Hoult's mutant come face-to-face with Issac's supervillain? “To be honest with you, the times we were acting in the same scene were often quite distant,” he admitted. “So I could sense the presence of him – and he’s certainly got a lot of presence, in life – he’s a really fun guy to be around. And that character’s a tricky one to play, you know, essentially a mutant from an era long ago, awoken in this modern day, very confused about what’s been going on around him and decides to do something about it. He certainly brings an intensity to it, in a great way.”

About wearing the 1980s costumes, Hoult admits to feeling a little silly. “80s gear? You know what I felt like a bit of a kid wearing my Dad’s suits and stuff, because it’s very baggy the 80s style,” he said. “Big pants and shoulder pads. I’d try them on in the costume fittings and I’d look ridiculous. I’d look like a three-year-old wearing my Dad’s clothes, but that’s what it was at the time.”

Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-Men: Apocalypse, opening in theaters everywhere May 27, 2016. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel's X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from total destruction.

Oscar will kill it as Apocalypse.

Sadly his Apocalypse design will kill any interest people have.

It's so [frick]ing embarrassing that you're favorite X-Men villain gets compared to a goddamn shitty Power Rangers character. You got a perfect Magneto design and perfect Psylocke design then go meh on Apocalypse and have all the X-Men in not black leather but black armor.

Leave it to Fox to think "let's make these characters look like the comics but not everybody else".

Meh. Apocalypse looks OK to me. It really ain't a travesty. A grey face would be nice but it's not a dealbreaker.

Not a fan of Hoult's Hulk-Beast though. Him and Lawrence's Mystique are such weak points for this new trilogy. It's such a shame, because they had a great setup in first Class with Beast being ashamed of his mutation, and I really thought they'd spend the trilogy having Beast adapt and learn to accept his blue form. But nope, they did a cop out with that ridiculously stupid serum. Such a damn shame, and not in line with the character of Beast at all.

Unlike a lot of people I've dug quite a few of Fox's X-men films. Origins was a travesty, and The Last Stand was disappointing, because for every amazing thing they'd have a stupid thing following it. But First Class was enjoyable, and Days of Future Past was even better, if not slightly disappointing with certain characters (mostly Beast and Mystique). I just kinda wish Singer would stop lying about the costumes. Every film it's "they won't have black costumes this time". Until they do. However, Psylocke and Magneto in "Apocalypse" are a step in the right direction, costume-wise.

@MattBellissimo

People are always going to complain about the Fox-Men, haha. I think it's just so much a part of the culture now

I understand the reasoning behind it, because they aren't a very good representation of the source material, especially the costumes. But, most CBMs aren't. The majority of the previous X-Men movies are dated, imo, especially the early ones, which had no where near the visual effects we have today, and were made in a time in which CBMs weren't mainstream.

I am looking forward to X-Men without Singer eventually though, and I think what Miller is doing with the Deadpool and Colossus and the X-Men that he can use, is awesome. I hope Deadpool is a success and that they bring Miller on for all of the X-Men movies in the future, especially in the costume department.

I have high hopes for New Mutants

"so you get a bit of a back story to those guys."
Soooo, they will be the Iceman, Rogue and Colossus of the new movie. You know, side characters.

Welcome to the Mystique, Professor X, Beast and Magneto show.

Cant wait to see my girlfriend Olivia Munn kick some @ss!

They should really contact Adi Granov, when they reboot Wolverine

And, use his concept art

I'd love to see the new Wolverine looking like this on screen, hopefully following some type of "Enemy of The State" storyline, adapted for the characters that Fox has the rights too

X-men was alright.
x-2 was fantastic.
The last stand poor.
First Class was piss poor.
DOFP was also piss poor but somehow everyone keeps talking about it like was good. It was one of the worst movies in the genre I've ever seen.

I'd love them to make a film like xmen 2 again, with a solid story and characters who have proper reasons to be there!

Prove me wrong Fox, prove me wrong!

"Badass" is a phrase used way too loosely these days. But Oscar is a great actor so I have high hopes that he'll at "least" give us a verbal Apocalypse to remember.

Someone please ask them about Archangel because he looks ridiculous!

I have nothing but faith in this film. Singer's X-Men films while far from accurate to the comics (at least not 100% accurate) they're still able to be A+ films. There's a reason they get some of the best critic and audience responses outside of the fanboy community.

@JamesMann

Right on.

@NightsKing

You mean the previous timeline, where the last movie is from 2006?

I don't get why that matters, why would they mention Apocalypse in those movies. X-Men 1 (all the way back in 2000) starts way after Apocalypse ever would have appeared anyway in relation to the movie timeline

Apocalypse takes place in the 80's

What do people think of Tye Sheridan as Cyclops? I know nothing about him. I always pictured Scott being mature and strong, even as a young man, but insecure of his powers at-first. I've never seen Tye in a film yet so don't know how stern he can act. I love Cyclops and don't want him getting mistreated again by Singer's hard-on for Jackman.

Hank McCoy is a boisterous, loudmouth womaniser who gets even more confident when he is a blue beast. He is best friends with Iceman.

Has anyone addressed how this idiot's character is NOTHING LIKE HANK MCCOY????????

Definitely high on the anticipation list for me. DOFP and Wolverine are both fantastic movies. I like what I've seen from the set photos, and the cast is top notch. Singer makes damn fine films. Can't wait.
