Why I Am Highly Concerned About X-men: Days of Future Past. Less Wolverine, more X-Men.

X-men OH X-men. So far the live action universe for X men has become unnecessarily convoluted. In terms of following the source material there is a very big issue with these movies. The movies are very much centered one character. That characters name is…………..Wolverine. He is the most developed character in the whole series and at times the only developed character. He has two solo films and is going to be in Days of Future Past. Originally the story line in the comic has Kitty Pride go back in time to warn the X- men of imminent doom, but instead Wolverine will be sent back in time. This kind of deviation from the source material just doesn’t sit well with me as a fan. It shows clearly that twentieth century fox is trying to capitalize on Hugh Jackmans appeal to audiences.

One of my biggest issues is the fact that Cyclops is barely in the movies. He is the LEADER of the X-men, but ended up becoming poorly written and thrown out of the universe all together. I think it’s completely foolish to not utilize his character. His relationship with Jean is pretty much thrown out the window, because of Wolverine. There NEEDS to be less of wolverine and more of other characters.

Probably my biggest gripe with the movies series is the fact that they don’t acknowledge relationships with characters. The last stand finally introduced the juggernaut, but didn’t even slightly mention or acknowledge the fact that Xavier and he are related. This was definitely a missed opportunity. In X-men 2 Mystique and Nightcrawler fight together, but once again their relationship is not acknowledged. Mystique gave birth to Nightcraweler how the heck can you dismiss that in a movie?! I feel that no true character development will take place, due to the scale of the movie, and the poor handling of the source material.

Bryan Singer is directing Days of Future Past. I am not comfortable with this at all especially after seeing Jack the Giant Slayer. Although X-men 1 and 2 were decent films he has not proven that he can make a great film. I enjoyed first class a lot, but was extremely disappointed to find out that Mathew Vaughn dropped out of filming this movie. Days of Future Past has so much potential as a comic book movie. If done right it could set the bar like the Avengers did. Having a time travel story arc in a live action comic book format just sounds epic.

I really really really hope that wolverine isn’t the center of attention in the film. Let the other characters get there shine already. I want a true X- men TEAM film. After seeing the Avengers work as a team I realized that the X-men films have failed miserably. Out of all of the films First class was in my opinion the only movie to really show the X-men as a team. The first three didn’t feel balanced at all. I Hopefully when I see the movie all of my doubts and fears are thrown out the window. Overall, I truly want to enjoy this movie.

Singer has made a great film. X2 is a great film IMO, one of Marvel's best movies. Personally my favorite along with Spidey 2. X-Men is very good as well.

To me closeness to the comics isn't even half as big of a deal as making a good movie. Like Amazing Spider-Man is closer to the source material than Dark Knight. But anyone who's not a Garfield fan-girl (I kid, I kid) would agree that TDK is like a 1 million percent better movie. You see I really don't care if studios and directors take liberties with the characters as long as the movie turns out good.

Which is why I like the Dark Knight films, all the X-films except Origins as well as Iron Man 3. While they all manage to stray rather far from the material but they all are medium to high quality CBMs. And quality movie >>>>>>>>>>>>>> movie close to comics.

Singer and Fox have ruined X-Men for me... I don't see this movie being any kind of improvement

So you complain about them not following the source material, and then try to claim that First Class was the best! BWWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Yes, there may not be enough Cyclops, and too much Wolverine, your right about that one. I don't think you grasp the concept of alternate dimensions. Let me explain......

In the Ultimate comics, Juggernaut is a Mutant, and not related to Xavier.
In the 616 comics, Juggernaut isn't a Mutant, and IS related to Xavier.

See, now the movies, they take place in a different dimension than the other two. Look it up in The Marvel Comics Database. It will even tell you what number is assigned to the dimension. Its a different story, with different backgrounds for the characters. Thats my point. Singer did just fine. X 3 while controversial, still didn't really screw up continuity with the story they were telling. Wolverine Origins is were they started to lose it. And First Class made it worse. Dont get me wrong though, I love every one of them. It will be interesting to see how they try to patch this up.

@ Wylee

You're right, the films do have their own reality number. But that is something they added later on. Its basically an excuse to explain why things are so screwed up.

Originally they set out to make an adaptation of the X-Men, and I'm sorry but making Cyclops, the leader and heart and soul of the X-Men and poorly written background character was just awful.

They even got the perfect actor to play hom. Marston was an awesome Cyclops, for the whole 10 minutes of screen time he was given.

I honestly believe this is going to be Hugh Jackman's last movie with the X-Men.

Think about it. In a future timeline, we have this post-apocalyptic setting like the Terminator movies. In the X-Men trilogy, there was nothing indicative of this - and while we saw some blink-and-you'll-miss-it easter eggs, nothing in the story led us to believe that Sentinels would conquer North America. That is exclusive to this movie, and the stinger from the Wolverine.

We all know that Wolverine is being sent into the past, presumably to unite Magneto and Xavier. What they are doing is putting something that shouldn't be present in the 70s - they are altering the timeline. Now yes, Wolverine's mind is just going to do the time-traveling: there won't be two Wolverines, but at the same time, he is going to be making changes.

What if Wolverine is the one who ruins the timeline? Suppose in trying to stop Magneto from assassinating Nixon, he actually becomes the weapon (wielded by magnetism) to kill the President. Suppose humanity declares war on mutants outright after that, and as time progresses, Sentinels are built?

So how would Wolverine stop this from happening? Kill himself, that's how. If he kills his past's body, then he won't be able to time travel, and won't get near the President.

It's just a theory. What it bottoms down to is this: he is bringing something different to the past that wasn't there before. Now Wolverine could be chasing something, but I've always hated that kind of time travel. Wouldn't time be affected before he can realize it?

I think for us to get a proper x-men film we need to start with the original 5 and then make the plot of the movie is to save wolverine from magneto. But make sure cyke is the leader and is able to put wolverine in his place.

"Why is Wolverine the time traveller"

Why were shots of Patrick Stewart and Ian Mckellen used in the annoucement trailer for X-Men: First Class which focused on the past adventures of Magneto and Xavier?.

Your answer lies there.
