X-Men: First Class is a prequel to X-Men: First Class

An article explaining why First Class is not the movie you think it will be.

So what do we know about X-Men: First Class? We know the title, director, producer, and who's playing whom. We also know some plot details, but not the entire plot. Everyone assumes that it will be just like the First Class comic but will switch out the original five for a new five. Obviously people have been very against the idea of doing a First Class movie without the original students. But what if the movie isn't what we think it is?

The plot of the First Class comic was that Xavier's students teamed up to create the original X-Men and defeat Magneto. From what we've heard about the movie, the story will take place before the original team was even assembled! Mathew Vaughn, the director, has said that the plot is as follows:

"Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men."

So basically the movie is a group of mutants (Xavier, Lensherr, Beast, Havok, Banshee, Mystique, Azazel, Angel Salvadore, Darwin) must fight the world's greatest threat (most likely The Hellfire Club consisting of Emma Frost and Sebastian Shaw). This movie's main focus is NOT about the formation of the X-Men. The X-Men will most likely form at the end of the movie. At that point we will see the TRUE First Class. Well, almost true. We will see a young Cyclops, young Jean Grey and a somewhat older Beast. But in order to stay with continuity there will not be a young Iceman or young Angel. Instead it will most likely be a young Storm. 3 outta 5 aint bad.

So do not fret, fanboys. This movie will not step all over and spit on your First Class comic. Instead, it will lead into the First Class comic and still stay in the X-Men film universe.

On account of the fact that you know NOTHING about the movie, why do you think it will suck. Anyone can say a movie will suck, but can you back up your accusations with legit reasons?

Specifically @ InSpace
I know its not based on the comics. This article is basically here to open the eyes of everyone who is bitching about it trashing the comic

Dude, Singer has laid out the plot and this ain't it. The film will be set in the 1960's (Pre 1963 since Kennedy is the president according to Singer) so we are not going to see the original X-Men; they wouldn't have been born yet.

Have you gleaned nothing from the near one thousand posts on the other three or four articles relating directly to the Singer interview, its all over the goddamn front page.

FireStarter - 8/22/2010, 9:57 PM
@LEEE777-Are you kidding me? how can you speculate anything without even knowing the full story? you cant just say something will suck without even seeing an actual trailer. Plus why does 20th century fox suck? is it because deadpool wasn't what everyone thought him out to be in the wolverine movie? especially to you @inspace-is that why you would want to boycott wolverine 2? because that movie was really good, and the only thing that people can keep crying about is that deadpool had blades come out of his hands, his mouth was sealed shut and he had optic blasts...but why does 20th century fox suck is what i want to know? xmen 1 and 2 were amazing especially with bryan singer directing both of them and now that he is producing first class you know for a fact that the xmen franchise is for sure to kick-ass. Does 20th century really suck or is it because nothing is to your guys's liking?

@ Nero

Didn't know i had to specifically put in the article that it was set in the 60's. thought that was general knowledge by now. Also, I never said we would see the original X-Men. I said that if we did it would be at the end like an epilogue. Did you not read the article? Nothing I have contradicts anything Singer has said.
FireStarter
FireStarter - 8/22/2010, 10:07 PM
@NERO- dude did you even read the article? or the title to this whole thing? because it clearly said that its xmen: first class (prequel) to the actual first class. Which means there is a team that sets up for the actual xmen team with cyclops and jean grey. Yes its in the 60s, so xavier and magento are as a team to fight together until they do see things differently which then creates the brotherhood and the xmen. which means the actual team of xmen will then be born...but until then this is a prequel before we see the xmen that we know about. Because this team that will be in the movie is people who have mutant abilities along side xavier and magneto who want to fight the same fight, and they are all young, especially xavier and magneto. But like i said this movie will get into that with detail of course and show how xavier and magneto have differences amongst each other hence making the brotherhood and the xmen...thus creating the XMEN
NERO
NERO - 8/23/2010, 12:17 AM
What I'm saying is that I doubt that the First Class comic will be a basis and that Singer's lack of concern with the X-Men cannon will not lead to the "First Class" of Scott, Jean, Orroro, Hank, et al as being considered the first class of X-Men in this film. Rather, I think the B-listers such as Banshee will constitute the first class. I say this because even though who makes up the first class matters to us it matters little to Singer. That and I see no reason for an epilogue set in the late 80's or early 90's to introduce who we, the fans, consider the true first class of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.

here is the problem I have. The time line is crap.
In Origins:Wolverine, Logan fought in the Vietnam War which ended in 1975, (I understand they may not have been in that long, but they certainly weren't in the beginning either) So lets say they were "executed" in 1965 (Halfway)
Then it's SIX YEARS LATER! that the events of cyclops and everything happening. So how can they have EMMA FROST in the 1960's when she was taken by CHARLES in the 1970's! The time line is all backed up, Fox needs to either make this movie right or just do the UNIVERSE a favor and give the rights back to marvel.

So...you've clearly never read X-Men: First Class. That means that the whole basis of your article is a little screwy. How can you say the movie won't step all over the comic? You don't know what the comic is about, lol.

it IS trashing the comic. The plot of the comic is NOT about the first team forming to fight Magneto. The comic is basically the "lost years" of the first class. In fact, Magneto didn't make an appearance in ANY of them. Also, the team was already formed from the get go of the First Class comics.

2nd, We've already been told that Cyclops and Marvel Girl will NOT be in it...at all.

basically, you're the one assuming that it will just be a group of mutants (the ones you listed), and then they'll form the original team. THAT is the assumption that you're making. The things people are mad about are actually things that the director has stated as fact. I think you have things a little backwards

CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 8/23/2010, 7:53 AM
also, why would they call it "FIRST CLASS" if the people who have been confirmed as being in it are not going to be the first class? doesn't make much sense.

@ LEEE

so let me get this straight...

you don't like that the first class of X-Men is Havok, Darwin, and a bunch of other idiots? can't blame you, lol. i just like that people say it makes sense that Cyclops isn't in this because it takes place in the 60's. yet its okay that Havok is in it? Havok is Cyclops' YOUNGER brother! WTF?

I guess Fox is just going to change it and make Havok the older brother...which is stupid. Part of what makes Havok is the fact that he's lived in Cyclops' shadow his whole life. lol

TROLLHUNTER is right, i mean you guys have to give him credit for digging up all of this information. From the way it looks, it is possible that this could be a plot for the film, it even includes facts stated by the director. Plus its the closest assumption to an actual idea of the plot that i've read so you guys need to back off already. I dont see you guys putting anything out there with your input on what we could and could not expect from the movie. So geez dammit just give him some credit, and i'll LMAO if what he said turns out to be 100% true...even if its 80% true he still has my vote. So im sticking to this til i see an actual trailer.

As I have said... They all want to piss their scent on movies. Having characters that weren't even in existence in the books out before the second team. Oh well... I know they will never do it right and I am a little better on just watching and hoping for something with good effects. But I really wish instead of only taking credit for a great movie I wish they would admit a mistake or when they fail. We can only hope.

"...and the only thing that people can keep crying about is that deadpool had blades come out of his hands, his mouth was sealed shut and he had optic blasts..."

@Firestarter - For the most part I'm right there with ya, but as far as X-Men Origins: Wolverine goes, it was kind of bad. I've actually softened up on it a bit since I first saw it (I used to HATE it) but from a story-telling perspective it was pretty bad.

I didn't give a crap about any of the characters. Gambit was completely wasted and was put in the movie just so they could say they had Gambit in it. That role honestly could have been replaced with any other charcter and it wouldn't have mattered. In fact charcters were thrown in that entire movie just for the "Oh hey look it's..." effect. Not to mention Gambit's questionable "accent" that kept fading in and out.

Also, with the exception of the final fight between Wolverine/"Deadpool"/Sabretooth, the effects were quite sub-par. Wolverine's claws in the bathroom scene looked like cartoon claws.

And adamantium bullets? Really? I'm willing to forgive them on the logic issue with that and pretend that when you shoot something that is supposedly "indestructible" with a bullet that is also "indestructible" it doesn't just bounce off his damn head or the fact that, if indeed it did make it through, how it seemed to ONLY effect his memory (Stryker's the best shot in the world apparently)...that whole concept was just some of the laziest writing I've ever seen.

Ugh...the more I talk about it the more I hate it.

actually, my problem with the article is that he says the movie won't be crapping on the "First Class" comic as much as we think, yet he CLEARLY has no idea what the First Class comics are, much less what happens in any of them.

"The plot of the First Class comic was that Xavier's students teamed up to create the original X-Men and defeat Magneto."

This statement from the article is completely wrong.

and so is this one...

"So do not fret, fanboys. This movie will not step all over and spit on your First Class comic. Instead, it will lead into the First Class comic and still stay in the X-Men film universe."

So, sorry if it seems like this guy doesn't really know what he's talking about.

one thing i do want to note is that, if this is truly set in the 60's for the majority of the movie and prof x is young, then it's reasonable to assume that he couldn't possibly be establishing his own school at his age, so it being a prequel to first class isn't outside the realm of possibility

personally, i dont see cylcops in jean being in the movie, rather an ending that shows prof x starting his school

singer has already retconned before, so likely he's going to ignore x3 and wolverine altogether, or even he could include wolverine's ending by doing something like, Magneto: how are you going to find them Charles? Charles: im going to have them find me. referencing wolverine a little bit

ScarletSpidey - 8/24/2010, 11:45 AM
So people's biggest problem is that it's called First Class and doesn't have the true First Class? Ok, sounds fair enough.

I saw the Karate Kid remake earlier this year and, though it was set in China and had absolutely NOTHING to do with karate, it was still a pretty good film. The title actually still irks me a little but I can look past that and enjoy a quality film for what it is.
MrSinister510
MrSinister510 - 8/24/2010, 12:46 PM
Ha. ScarletSpidey, I totally agree with you on the Karate Kid remake. It should have been Kung Fu Kid those effers. Ha. However, it was a pretty decent flick.

As for First Class, I definitely hear both sides. Yes, it sucks that they had tricked the fans into believing it would be about the X-Men First Class comic. Not using the starting 5 members is a disappointment. I can appreciate what Singer and Vaughn are trying to tie in the continuity. But is it really needed? If yes, Singer was awesome in the first two X-MEN, can't we start the continuity from there and get rid of X-Men 3.
If not, just do a reboot and be true to the origins and cast the starting 5 or at just change the X-Men title.

This movie is not crapping on the comic. The movie that you would have to worry about that could possibly screw up the First Class comic is the potential sequel. I do know about the comic, the question you need to ask yourself is do you? Heres a refresher course for ya-

i heard its finally an official prequal which is gay as hell. it taks place in the 60's and both xavier and eric are in their 20's. i guess none of the original xmen are going to be in it. they will have beast in it which doesnt make sense cause beast i thought even in the movies was suppose to be close to cyclops storm and jean grays age but apparently not. and the hellfire club is in it with emma frost and shes older then she was in wolverine origins? now does that make sense i swear people are retarded. im going to become a director and show you people how its done from scratch

This article is crap and so will this movie be crap. I hate Singer as much as I hate Uwe Boll. How can you have Havok before Cyclops, that is BS. I am tried of Fox crapping all over the Summers family and the X-men in general. This movie should fail and comic book fans should support its failing so the rights will go back to Marvel.
