Reported on the "foolish" day the month from Latino Review, Deadline now confirms that Universal Pictures wants The Hurt Locker actor Jeremy Renner to takeover as lead of their Tony Gilroy-directed The Bourne Legacy film.

The search is over. Universal Pictures has formally offered Jeremy Renner the lead role in the Tony Gilroy-directed The Bourne Legacy. Hes expected to sign on quickly to play a new character in the spinoff film that begins production in September.

Before taking over the Matt Damon-driven spin-off, Renner, 40, will be appearing in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, in which he plays a similar "operative" role, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, and The Avengers, which commences filming next week. Although, THR seems to think scheduling may conflict.

Also, other actor Universal strongly tested include Dominic Cooper, Taylor Kitsch, Garrett Hedlund, Luke Evans, and Renner's Hurt Locker co-star Anthony Mackie.

Anyhow, while full story details are being kept underwraps, tentatively jump-starting production in September, what do you think?

i am so glad for this guy.he was always amazing actor, searching for a career for so long and now he has it.the thing is most of you are thinking-he will have 4 giant franchise in his future.well 5,if he gets his hawkeye spin-off.
but bourne legacy will be the only thing were he will be the main, true lead.the whole movie will depend on him and it will prove if he is a star or not.cruise is still the star of mission impossible,in hancel and gretel he shares his time with gemma and in avengers he wont have more then 25,30 minutes of screen time.

Impossible Mission Forces Agent? Check.
SHIELD Agent? Check.
Treadstone Agent? Check.

The man's agent obviously thinks he has incredible range.

For the record Renner will not be playing Bourne, but a different operative with ties to Treadstone & Blackbriar. I think the film makers know Damon is irreplaceable so it's good to see them go with a different character with a connection to Bourne. Gilroy is an excellent writer and director (see "Michael Clayton") so this should turn out really good.

Obviously he's not going to be "Jason Bourne"... it even says it in the article. They're just keeping "Bourne" in the title for recognition...

My question with Renner is whether audiences can actually like him. Don't get me wrong, he's a great actor, but in most of his roles he plays a guy you kind of hate. He's very untried as the appealing lead in anything, and now he's been tapped to play an elite agent in three potential franchises.

Can he actually draw an audience, rather than just convince an audience that there are quality people involved? Because that's the difference between a Star and an Actor.

Good choice!

He have at least 3 films and 10 years of action before him.

this makes NO sense.. the guy's already got a FULL plate on his schedule. Mission: Impossible (and maybe its future sequels) and all the Marvel movies a number of years from now.

making him the new Bourne doesn't add up. does Damon really not want to reprise the role???

The prerequisite for the role of Jason Bourne is: "You must have a shnoz like a rudebega!"

IDK if it's Matt Damon or just the Bourne movies period but one of the two really bores me. I can't sit through any of them. Maybe Renner will change that.

My english teacher actually knows him. I just watched the Bourne trilogy the other day, and he could be good to play another agent, just as long as he doesn't play Bourne. Matt Damon IS Jason Bourne
