UK BOX OFFICE: THE BOURNE LEGACY And THE EXPENDABLES 2 Fail To Outdo BRAVE

It's been a busy couple of weeks at the UK box office as both The Bourne Legacy and Brave were released last Monday, just a few days before the release of The Expendables 2.

It's been out in North America since June, but the debut of Brave in the UK has still been met with an extremely enthusiastic response. Released last Monday opposite The Bourne Legacy, it took £5.2 million this weekend, easily winning the 3D Pixar film the #1 spot. The fact that it expanded its opening from only Irish and Scottish cinemas to those in England and Wales actually resulted in an 818% increase in ticket sales (explaining why it leapt from #5 to #1). The Expendables 2 had a disappointing domestic opening and its performance in the UK hasn't been much better unfortunately. Falling way short of the £3.94 million opening of the first movie in 2010, it finished at #4, barely holding off competition from The Dark Knight Rises; a film which has so far made over £75 million on this side of the pond. Many thanks to Digital Spy for the following figures.

The UK box office top ten in full:

1. (5) Brave - £5,269,402
2. (-) The Bourne Legacy - £4,620,289
3. (1) Ted - £2,076,046
4. (-) The Expendables 2 - £1,985,082
5. (2) The Dark Knight Rises - £1,506,178
6. (-) Ek Tha Tiger - £543,073
7. (4) Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days - £459,526
8. (6) Ice Age 4: Continental Drift - £350,788
9. (3) Step Up 4: Miami Heat - £340,072
10. (-) The Wedding Video - £333,079

In all reality, and I'm sure producers would admit to this, after the release of The Avengers, there was no turning back, there wasn't a movie this summer that could have outdone the type of movie Avengers turned out to be. The Dark Knight Rises was a great movie, great story, great actors, not enough "kick" and "wow" factors that the Avengers gave.. I'm a big Batman fan and I had to admit that the movie was great but it didn't wow me. So no surprise that these two movies didn't make it.

@deadly whistle True say, i think the expendables should be doing better. hopefully i will go see it tonight. Bourne legacy didnt interest me one bit. I think the avengers and the dark knight, were the most see films of the summer. The avengers definitely blew away my expectations, The bar (very high bar) was already set with the previous two batman films and it delivered but just. And everything else coming after those pales in comparison.

i will prob see dredd as I watch all things CBM related but not much at the moment is exciting for me in the upcoming line up. I need an epic scifi flick or something to get excitement up.

Grif I like you, but have you even seen any of the movies that you think are shit?

@TonyTony

The feeling is mutual, I really am hoping for an epic Marvel/DC film, right now I've given up on the rest of the summer movies, as Avengers pretty much did it for me and Batman was a entertaining. Yet, next year what I am looking forward to, besides the usual (Thor, Iron Man, Captain America) is Man of Steel. I really have my hopes up for this one, as it was shattered with the Superman Returns failed film. Based on the previews that I saw, it seems that it will touch a good portion of the humanity behind Superman and not to mention way better CGI than any of the previous Superman films.

Just go to wait and see...

And in what universe would anyone expect those films to top a PIXAR movie especially over a holiday season?

..Dumb article headline!

@ MisterNiceGuy - of course Grif doesn't see the movies he hates, he can tell us what movie is gonna be sh*t before it even begins production.

Grif is right about one thing though - Batman 3 (aka Batman Forever) was sh*t, Batman 4 (Batman & Robin) was even worse, Batman 5, 6 & 7 were pretty awesome though.

Expendables 2 is already down nearly 10 million dollars on what the first Expendables was after the same amount of days in release....I love my 80s action movies and their stars as much as anyone, but the Expendables movies are cool ideas with very unimaginitive execution, they should go straight to DVD. The poor box-office seems to indicate that the public has no interest in seeing these old action stars up there on the big screen, with all their plastic surgery and saggy manboobs magnified 100 times for all the world to see.

Stop picking on Grif. He's not always wrong. And he liked Avengers, I believe.
