UPDATE: Matt Damon & Paul Greengrass Negotiating Return To JASON BOURNE Franchise?

Last year's The Bourne Legacy, that starred Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, was a moderate hit at the box office grossing $276 million. But, that didn't even come close to matching Matt Damon's last film in the franchise, 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum which pulled in $443 million. Even so, Universal announced at the beginning of this month that screenwriter Anthony Peckham (Sherlock Holmes) had been hired to pen the next chapter in the franchise.

That news didn't sit to well with fans of the series, as they were still hoping that Matt Damon would return to the franchise. And it seems that their prayers may have been answered. Twitch Film reports:

The studio (Universal) is in simultaneous negotiations with both Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass for both to return to the Bourne franchise. We're told Damon is only interested if Greengrass is directing so there are clearly a lot of moving parts here but if all comes together we could be seeing the return of the director and star of one of the strongest American action franchises of recent years.

Furthermore, Twitch Film, says that Universal isn't ditching Aaron Cross. The plan would be to have both Cross and Bourne co-existing, with a chance of having a "crossover/merger" of the two storylines. What do you think?

UPDATE: Variety reached out to Universal, and they were told: "Universal has said there is no truth to the rumor Damon and director Paul Greengrass are in negotiations to return for another ‘Bourne’ feature."

This would actually be good, but I'd prefer a cross-over, or at least both films referencing each other through a cleverly integrated plot.

I heard Matt Damon in an interview and he made it clear he did not want to return to the Bourne fanchise...he said he had a miserable time filming the last one, almost made it seem like he left on bad terms with the people behind it...I guess in the end of the day, Money talks.

I'm kinda surprised. Legacy wasn't really that bad, entertaining for sure. Renner was really good. Also loved first 30 minutes of the movie.

Damon surely won't return without GreenGrass.

@Alan Warlock

hell yeah. I still own this movie on VHS.

Need to bring back Rachel Weisz too. She's so beautiful and probably the best actress going right now.

I'm all for another movie but include Aaron Cross in the script, don't waste the events in Legacy, the movie was a great presentation of contingency at its most ruthless.

So he's just gonna run around again...and again...and again...the fight scenes were good but I think they should move on from the franchise.

I'm for it, but I'd be cool with a cross-over. I just assumed that's where they were going anyway. Legacy was pretty meh, I mean I have no desire to see a sequel unless it is a cross over.

@BlueDemon

i think those movies wouldn't work if they didn't show us CIA tactics in it. Otherwise it would be just Matt running and punching the bad guys from left to right.

For me it was always the most interesting aspect of the story.

A backbone.

Absolutely loved the Bourne trilogy, but I never was interested in seeing the 4th one with Jeremy Renner. If Matt Damon ever came back, I'd probably force myself to see Bourne Legacy and then go see the next one in theaters, but I wish they'd just leave the trilogy alone. Is Bourne Legacy worth it at all?

matt damon has been saying this since day 1!!!
hes been saying he will only come back if greengrass is back as well hes been saying that since the trilogy ended!!
i wouldnt mind seeing a 4th but where would it go??
last place we saw him in the 3rd film was swimming away lol
honestly if him n green were still together we would of gotten a 4th film probably back in 2010/2011

but i hope this is true
