BOX OFFICE: SPECTRE Wins The Weekend With Second Highest Bond Opening Ever

The weekend is over and the numbers are in - and it was a great result for Sony & Bond. Spectre topped the US box office, acheiving the second highest opening in 007 history.

Two weeks ago, Spectre acheived the highest UK debut for a Bond movie all time. While it hasn't quite reached those dizzying heights across the pond, it's certainly made some great business this weekend. Per Box Office Mojo, Sam Mendes' second 007 flick opened to the tune of $73 million, placing it just below his first, Skyfall, which grossed a whopping $88.4 million back in 2012.

More success is on the way, with the movie unlikely to meet any major competition until Mockingjay - Part 2 opens November 20. Meanwhile, Bond wasn't the only classic character to shine this weekend. The Peanuts Movie came in with a more than respectable $45 million, leaving the rest of their competitors in the dust. Here are the top 5 highest grossing movies domestically:

1) Spectre - $73 million
2) The Peanuts Movie - $45 million
3) The Martian - $9.3 million
4) Goosebumps - $7 million
5) Bridge Of Spies - $6.1 million

With Spectre still outperforming Skyfall in the UK, there's a small chance it may follow its predecessor into that exclusive 'billion club' by the end of its run. Do you think it's possible, or will it fall just shy? What did you think of Spectre and/or The Peanuts Movie? Sound off below!

I Doubt it.

Jurassic World still killed it with only an average score on RT.

General Audiences aren't really into that kinda stuff like us :)

I wouldn't call Spectre a shit movie. I really liked aspects of it but I thought the villains (no spoilers) plot and the way it ties into everything was a little over the top. I havea hard time believing someone that irrational and obsessive would be able to create a world wide organization capable of toppling mI6. Other than that I thought it was nicely shot and Hinx was a badass. That train fight was fantastic.

told yah this movie would not do as good as skyfall. that movie was a fluke like jp4. nobody knows why they did so well.

i have yet to see this one. i may wait for the bluray

@grif

The Jurassic Park franchise is so popular that it didn't have to be great but only decent.

Same with Bond I believe.

But if the movie was truly terrible then it wouldn't matter lol.

MI5 was one of the best movies this year and didn't even break 700 Million.

All I'm saying is RT should not be a guage for Box office success.

Skyfall was awesome, I really liked it

Still looking forward to Spectre, hope it's not as bad as some people are saying

I suspect Kingsman will actually stay the only spy movie on the big screen for me this year. I was very excited about the Spectre cast, but somehow the trailers did little to keep that excitement going. Now the reviews aren't exactly driving me to the theater either.

I guess I should get IM5 on blu-ray, though.

I enjoyed Spectre. It was a funner Bond movie but I don't think it was necessary. Skyfall was a masterpiece and could have been a great ending to a Craig trilogy. Enjoyable nonetheless. Bautista is a classic Bond goon in Spectre and Léa Seydoux is smoking hot.

Seeing PEANUTS today!

Don't know why people are knocking Spectre. I thought it was a fantastic entry.

I'm game for Elba as Bond. Honestly I could care less about a younger actor taking over. It took four movies to establish Bonds biggest villain and the pay off was....dull. Give me standalone Bond movies with Elba as an established James Bond with an established Blofeld and an established Moneypenny, M and Q. Establish that shit. No more [frick]ing origin stories.
