MAN OF STEEL Star Henry Cavill Is Leaving The Door Open To Playing James Bond Despite Claims He's Too Old

Man of Steel and Justice League star Henry Cavill has talked about potentially playing James Bond, dismissing the notion that he's now too old to swap Superman's cape for 007's tuxedo. Check it out...

After starring in the likes of Mission: Impossible - Fallout and The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Henry Cavill is no stranger to the spy genre. Next up for him is Guy Ritchie's The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare where he'll take on the role of Gus March-Phillipps, a real-life influence for Sir Ian Fleming's James Bond.

Appearing on The Rich Eisen Show (via ActioNewz.com), Cavill addressed the long-standing claims that he's among the actors being eyed to take over from Daniel Craig as 007.

"All I've got to go off is the rumors. The same information you have. Maybe I'm too old now. Maybe I'm not," the 40-year-old former Superman told the host. "It's up to Barbara Broccoli and Mike Wilson, and we'll see what their plans are."

Asked if he believes playing March-Phillipps might have helped his cause, Cavill added, "Yeah, it seems like a good first step, right? I’m sure Ian Fleming wrote James Bond with a lot of stories, a lot of characters in mind, but as I understand it Gus March-Phillipps was one of the stronger influences."

For those of you who aren't aware, his character in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare was the founder of the British Army's precursor of the SAS. It was after World War II when Fleming wrote his James Bond novels, with March-Phillipps as a key source of inspiration.

Last year, Casino Royale director Martin Campbell looked back at Cavill's audition for the 2006 reboot.

"He looked great in the audition. His acting was tremendous," the filmmaker said. "And look, if Daniel [Craig] didn’t exist, Henry would have made an excellent Bond. He looked terrific, he was in great physical shape…very handsome, very chiseled. He just looked a little young at that time back then."

"The way they work with Bond, and it’s pretty terrific, is when they decide on the actor and you audition - in our case, it was eight people - it’s very democratic," Campbell added. "You sit around a table, eight or nine of you. It was myself and the producers, casting director, etc. And you go through the eight people and you put your hand up as you talk through each person and ultimately everybody has to be unanimous in their decision, if you see what I mean."

Kraven the Hunter star Aaron Taylor-Johnson is the current frontrunner to play the next Bond, though that remains a rumour and little more. Cavill would be a good fit for the role, but perhaps not if the franchise's producers are looking for someone to have a stint as lengthy as Craig's.

@tylerzero - Kind of, his Solo from U.N.C.L.E was basically the James Bond type with an american accent, but yeah, i wouldn't mind seeing him tap into that Walker character he was in MI6 as he was quite the physical challenger aswell.

What I liked about the Craig movies was that he was much more of a fighter than a shooter. If it is that Aaron Taylor Johnson is the next Bond, i think it would be awsome to see him fight someone like Cavill if the character was very similar in nature and charisma as Bond, but obviously had a different code of ethics etc thus making him the antagonist It would be poetic aswell, as he was only second to Craig when they rebooted 007 with Casino Royale.

@UniqNo - Loved Henry in Both Fallout (amazing physical villain) and Man from UNCLE. I hope he gets Bond, but im afraid they'd say he's "too old" now, even though he doesnt look 40 at all

@MotherGooseUPus - if it were to be him, by the time they start shooting and when it comes out he'll be closer to mid 40s, so if it's a reboot and they're likely going to want him to stick around for 4 to 7 movies, then he'll age out quite quickly depending on how quick they produce them.

I know the comparisons for Roger Moore are obvious. But they'll want to make sure this guy can look like he can hold his own in a fight. Difference in how those older movies are appreciated compared to action/spy movies in a post Bourne, Avengers and Craig Bond cinema era.

@UniqNo - i mean i get it, i do, so it makes sense to go with someone younger... just wish Henry could get a big WIN under his belt after the bullshit he went through with Superman and the Witcher.

Also, i never liked Roger Moore as bond. My favs are Sean Connery and Craig.. although i did love Pierce and those cheesy 90s/early 2000s

@MotherGooseUPus - I'm rooting for him too. I'm hearing good things about his latest though. Finally getting an opportunity to show some range.

@UniqNo - i will be seeing that movie in theaters, just not sure when. it looks bonkers in all the right ways, he looks like he's having a blast, and i love some "semi accurate" historical stuff.

@UniqNo - I just saw it today. i f*cking Loved it! it was pure Guy Ritchie at his finest. Cavill and the entire main cast were absolutely on point in the movie and looked like they had a blast making it. The stand outs were Cavill, Eliza and Ritchison. Loved the fact it was based on a true story and changed world history at the same time for what they pulled off.... anyways, great movie imo and hope it does well at the theaters and gets good reviews

@MotherGooseUPus - that's great! I heard Ritcheson is a stand out! Can't wait to see the interactions he's got with Cavill.

@UniqNo - he def was. Him and Cavill had fantastic chemistry in the movie. for me, him, cavill and eliza were the stand outs, but, the entire main cast was great. hope you like it... well worth watching

James Bond is not a character who needs an Oscar worthy actor and I still don't believe that Cavill has enough range for that.

What's the hold-up with Aaron Taylor-Johnson??? It's been nearly a month since he was supposedly officially offered the role and not a word since then. 🤨

I think Cavill as of now isn’t that old to play Bond but they would have to get going sooner then later if they pick him for the role..

He’s 40 and Craig was in his late 30’s when he was cast so I think it could work.

However personally while I do think Cavill would do well in the role , I feel like I have already seen his Bond more or less in Napoleon Solo from The Man from U.N.C.L.E…

I would rather we get someone more exciting such as lesser known actor or even Aaron Taylor Johnson who is the rumored front runner since he hasn’t played a Bond-type character yet (to my knowledge atleast).

Honestly, if he doesn't get to be Bond in the movie, I would love to see him as the Bond for the Project 007 Game. Henry is a big gamer and with Games age doesn't matter as much. They can make him look as young or as old as they want, he still gets to be his own Bond.

Roger Moore played the character very well and for a good amount of time. It is like we are regressing when it comes to ageism. With the right director, if they are so worried about age then film a trilogy back to back.

wait.....i thought most of the James Bond actor were cast on their 40's?

He's not too old. They could get 2 or 3 out of him easily - the 60s and 70s era Bond films WAY outkicked their coverage - plus 30 then looked like 50 now.

They [frick]ed up years ago by not putting Idris Elba in the role the second his name came up.

It's not the number, it's how the actor ages. Like Scarlet Johannsson looks 55 at 39. Kirsten Dunst is 42 and looks 58. Cavill still looks young and agile. If he wants to play Bond, but can't snag the role, he should create his own character who is like Fleming's Bond and go from there.

Pierce Brosnan was 44 when Goldeneye released. Daniel Craig was 38 when Casino Royale released. Henry will be 41 next month. He isn't too old at all. Henry could pass for late 30's easily.
