JUSTICE LEAGUE Star Henry Cavill On Whether Starring In ARGYLLE Takes Him Out Of Running For JAMES BOND

Henry Cavill remains a fan-favourite choice to swap Superman's cape for James Bond's tuxedo and the actor has now shared his thoughts on whether starring in Argylle has closed the door on him playing 007.

It's been a difficult couple of years for Henry Cavill. For a short time, the actor believed he'd return to the DC Extended Universe as Superman; brought back into the fold by Dwayne Johnson for a Black Adam cameo, he shot a small role in The Flash and announced his return as Kal-El along with plans for Man of Steel 2

However, when Warner Bros. Discovery formed DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran fired Cavill and his role in the Scarlet Speedster's solo outing was left on the cutting room floor.

It was also around this time the British actor decided to bid farewell to The Witcher's Geralt of Rivia, leaving him without a regular gig. On the plus side, he's been cast in Matthew Vaughn's new spy thriller Argylle and remains a rumoured frontrunner to suit up as the next 007.

Recently, Cavill was asked whether he believes starring in the upcoming action comedy will jeopardise his chances to take on that iconic role.

"It’s a fun character," the actor told Total Film (via SFFGazette.com) when asked if he's concerned about that. "Whether I’m ruled out of Bond because of this or not is up to Barbara Broccoli and Mr. Wilson."

As for that bizarre haircut he's rocking in Argylle, Cavill credited Vaughn with giving him such an unexpected look.

"Matthew came up with it, and said, 'Look, trust me, I can make it look good,'" he says. "You know what? You don’t just wake up and have a flattop. It takes work. I don’t know if I have the time or the patience for that kind of carry-on when it comes to my hair, in real life."

Regardless of whether he ends up playing James Bond or not, Cavill has had a taste of the spy genre with his villainous turn in Mission: Impossible - Fallout and looks to be having a lot of fun in Argylle

The greater the spy, the bigger the lie. From the twisted mind of Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman franchise, Kick-Ass) comes Argylle, a razor-witted, reality-bending, globe-encircling spy thriller.

Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World franchise) is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books—which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past.

Accompanied by Aiden (Oscar winner Sam Rockwell), a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur.

The ensemble cast also features Henry Cavill (The Witcher), John Cena (Fast X), Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), Dua Lipa (Barbie), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek), Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), and Samuel L. Jackson (Secret Invasion).

Argylle is directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn, from a screenplay by Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman). It arrives in theaters on February 2.

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - They are trying to work out how to get a woman in the role.

@marvel72 -

So you do this with every property? Just whine about Wokeness while inventing outlandish scenarios?

Doesn't that get tiring?

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - A woman who identifies as a man can go by James Bond.

Its the current trend.

I still say Fassbender.

Not only would he be a great choice, I think he needs it. He’s a great actor who has been placed in too many bad movies in his career. He needs a new agent.

@thewanderer -

That's maybe why Fassbender would want the job but not why Broccoli would want to cast him.

Class act. He belongs under the cape! Too bulky for James Bond In my opinion but would absolutely support him if he was.

I was going to say “Cavill is 41 this year — too old for a new Bond”, but Brosnan was that age in his first movie, Dalton was around 41 and Roger Moore was 45. So there is precedent if they go with another seasoned, middle-aged Bond. But if the Broccolis want a young Bond, fresh out of the military, Cavill has no shot.

@santoanderson - Just saying, average age for a Captain in the Royal Navy is 43 and Bond was a Commander so outside or Wartime (ie during WWII promotion was a LOT faster) limit to how young they can plausibly go without workarounds. Cutting it down to mid thirties would be reasonable and passed off by the GA as rapid ascension thru the ranks as most won't be that clued in on the norms but...

...but yeh, bulk of the films the actors were in their 40's since Connery's last film and Moore was 57 for his last one...

...unsure there would be much demand for a Bond in his 20's, better to go original IP for that to my mind maybe as a spinoff from a 007 film.

Hope he finally gets a chance to act instead of posturing. Needed to get that chance in MoS2 but alas, it wasn't meant to be.

Good. Doesn’t have the chops or charm for Bond.

The fact that he was shit-canned by Gunn for being too old for Superman is likely taking him out of the race for Bond.

Why would Broccoli and Wilson want WB's leftovers?

@Ginley - I don't think age wqs the reason he wasn't rehired.. his take was basically the flagship of the Snyderverse and that portrayal was not how he would like the character to be seen. Can't fully disagree there, as there were definitely some creative choices that i did not agree with.

None of the JL actors/characters imagined by Snyder are coming back in those roles...i simply beleive they're waiting out Gadot's contract she reupped after WW84 got sent to streaming.

Cavill would make a good Bond , no doubt imo but I still would rather someone else be given a shot (especially since I feel I have seen his Bond with Napoleon Solo from Man From UNCLE).

Speaking of actors already playing spies , I think Jack Lowden could work and I don’t think his Bond will be anything like his Slow Horses character either.

I don’t give a s### what about Gunn’s reboot does. Cavil’s Superman deserves a MOS 2. WB should’ve done it when they had the chance, not quickly have him meet and fight Batman afterwards.

@cyclopstb - still arguing for a final DCEU finishing movie that ends that universe's open plot threats. Done with a lower budget, wide shots are done with stand-ins and closeups shot with the lead actors over 2 weeks to save on cash.

VFX can be bad, they've been bad for 10 years now anyways.
Get a cheap soundstage and the actors in their costumes again. Might be a scheduling nightmare but a 100M Justice League 2 movie can be done.

I really wouldn't mind him as Bond, nevermind age. The character is supposed to be a middle aged dude anyways, so I'm totally game for this.

My personal dream cast:

James Bond: Henry Cavill (budget choice: Daniel Gillies)
M: Ian McKellen (budget choice: Anthony Head)
Q: Rowan Atkinson (budget choice: Rob Brydon)
Tanner: Regé-Jean Page (budget choice: Max Minghella)
Moneypenny: Felicity Jones (budget choice Daisy Head)
Felix Leiter: Alan Ritchson (budget choice: Charles Michael Davies)
Blofeld: Ben Kingsley (budget choice: Tobias Menzies)

This is me really grasping at straws here…does anyone else think there is a chance that Cavill will be back as Superman in a Kingdom Come-type story, since Legacy is about a younger-take on the Man of Steel?

That way in a decade or so, Cavill can put the cape back on as an older, scorned, isolated Superman.

Again, totally grasping at straws here. But just a thought

Cavill is gonna be tied up in Warhammer stuff on Amazon don’t think he’ll have time to play Bond.

He definitely could play bond, except that he is a muscular freak of nature.
