Is Daniel Craig Finished Playing JAMES BOND? It Seems So!

Fellow UK actor Mark Strong says his longtime friend Daniel Craig is probably finished playing the suave, 007 MI6 operative, James Bond. "He’s done what he wants with it. That point has come."

Out promoting his new film, Grimsby, Mark Strong was asked whether he would like to star as a Bond villain with his good friend Daniel Craig. The two have been friends since 1996, when they stared together on a BBC drama Our Friends in the North (check out that gnarly photo above from the show - yes, that's also Christopher Eccleston).  Craig is also the godfather of Strong's eldest son.  So it's not as if Strong is just giving his own personal thoughts on the subject, it stands to reason that he would know if Craigs was truly retiring his Aston Martin and laser fountain pen.

"Do you know what, I’d have loved to have played the villain in a Bond movie while Daniel was doing it because he’s a pal and that would have been great.  But I think he’s come to the end of his Bond time and so it’s probably never going to happen, but that would have always been great. He has been [wonderful] and he’s loved it. But I think he feels like he’s mined it. He’s done what he wants with it. That point has come."

Back in 2012, Craig actually signed a contract for 2 more Bond films after Skyfall. He delivered on one, Spectre, but it sounds as if he's looking for a backdoor exit out of the second. With Spectre grossing $879.4 million from an estimated budget of $245 million, what are the odds that Sony lets Craig walk?

I doubt it, Sony had a huge boost from better than expected profits and they specifically made sure to mention Spectre's success as being a big part of that. I don't think they'd want one of their only star's to walk off the role before his contract is up.

Even if Craig is done, I'd be happy with his run.

@JamesMann - Agreed. If he's done, it was a hell of a run.

Lol. Nah, he'll probably do one more as a "finale" for his Bond to wrap up any sort of lingering plot threads, and then it's on to the next one.

I remember back in probably 2009 (right before MGM had a financial crisis) I read an article, which was probably bullshit, about how MGM wanted Craig to do more Bond films than Roger Moore did. That would have been interesting to see.

I guess we'll get our answers soon, the next Bond film is supposed to begin pre-production this spring.

Good! The last Bond flick sucked anyway. I'm not a fan of this last bunch of Bond flicks.

I wouldn't mind Craig doing one more turn but Spectre was very disappointing. If he does, I hope that he's given better material to work with.

I wouldnt mind seeing them go with someone like Taron Edgerton. And bring back more of the Brosman style of fun and action. We did the stoic and dark Bonds and lets be honest Skyfall was the best of the batch. I just want to see Bond go back to fun action again.
But if they want to maintain the more serious tones and keep it suave. Maybe someone like Michael Fassbender would be a good choice. The man knows how to rock a tux thats for sure.
