Reports are coming in that Sir Roger Moore has passed away at age 89. The star's children announced the sad news over Twitter, confirming that their father died in Switzerland "after a short but brave battle with cancer”.

The legendary actor was best known for playing the third and longest running incarnation of 007 in the James Bond franchise, and will remain the most popular version of that iconic character for an entire generation.

Before taking over as Bond from Sean Connery, Moore made his name starring in TV shows The Saint and The Persuaders. He also devoted a lot of his time to humanitarian work, becoming a Unicef goodwill ambassador in 1991.

Moore is survived by his wife, Kristina Tholstrup, and three children.

Absolute legend and it's so sad we lost him. Seemed to live a great and long life to 89, may he rest in piece.

One of the best Bonds. His movies were my favorites out of the series when I was a little kid. RIP 007.

He may have been the silliest Bond, but he was Bond. James Bond. Rest in Peace, Sir Roger Moore.

@MosquitoFarmer - Crazy to think Roger is actually older than Connery. Looks a decade younger in that video
