Even though the 007 films have had brilliant singers like Paul McCartney and Shirley Bassey doing their theme songs, no Bond theme has ever reached #1 on the UK charts. The closest ones were Duran Duran´s "A View to a Kill" in 1985 and Adele´s "Skyfall" three years ago, both of which peaked at number 2. Well, today that curse has been broken.
Despite a mixed response from fans, Sam Smith´s "Writings on the Wall" reached number 1 on UK charts in just a week edging out Justin Bieber's hit "What do you Mean?", making it the first theme song of the 53-year-old franchise to ever reach number 1. The song is only available on Spotify and Itunes at the moment, making this victory even more impressive but the song´s music video, starring Smith, will be released next week.
Even if you are not a fan of the tune, you gotta apreciate the level of awareness it´s giving to the already highly anticipated film, making it´s chances of surpassing Skyfall´s BO total even bigger. Spectre hits theaters worldwide November 6.
