I will cut right to the chase and say I think Ultron should be the enemy.

Now I know that whoever reading this may be thinking "No, save him for the Avengers!" But hold on, nobody said Ultron would DIE in this movie. Ultron has always had one major flaw, his interior, which unlike his exterior, can be damaged. And I think that if Ultron were to be the enemy in Ant-man, that is how he should be defeated. For a few reasons, one being that Ultron would definitely be upgrading himself for the Avengers sequel, and since we would have already established that Ultron cannot be defeated by conventional methods, if he fixed the one chink in his armor, then it would make for a much more dangerous villain. And that would definitely get me more excited than if he just started raising hell in the sequel out of the blue, plus he would likely have already built a fanbase since he appeared in a previous movie, which would only garner more hype.

Another reason why I think that it would be best to have Ultron as the enemy would be because of the story about Ultron, he is Pyms biggest failure. He is to Henry Pym what Two-Face is to Batman. The biggest reminder of his mistakes. It makes for a good story, at least in my opinion it does.

And lastly, in all honesty, the general public has no idea who the hell Ant-man is, and while I know who he is, And I know a bit about his lore, I haven't got the slightest clue who his enemies are. The only one I can think of is Klaw, and thats based on my knowledge from Avengers:EMH. In addition to that, a guy who can shrink and grow and talk to ants may excite some, but it would also seem pretty lame to many others, and while I would buy a ticket no matter what, I do want these movies to be successful, so that they can make more. And people have shown time and time again that they like killer robots, and obviously Ultron is MUCH more than just the Terminator, but the point is that it may excite others who may not have gotten excited before.

Do I think that this will happen? No. But I still think it is a good idea.

who is the villain? how about...

Professor Newspaper..

or..

Sergeant Swatter!

no i got it!

Dr. Magnifying Glass!

Ant man is lame... Giant Man. Giant Man is where the money is. imagine a tiny man flying around on an ant during that final battle against the chitauri - ghey. Now imagine a [frick]ing 40 foot giant going toe-to-toe with a leviathan! Grabbing it by its tail and chucking it into the ocean before grabbing another and using it to smash the chitauri hordes. Yeah.. Way better than freakin ant-guy. what’s he going to do? Wait for cap to bury an alien up to his neck in the dirt then calls his legions to slowly bite the head until the alien dies? Cool. One down and it only took two guys and thousands of ants. I’m begging you marvel, PLEADING with you to keep ants out of Avengers movies. When you have characters like Black Panther, Ms Marvel, Captain Marvel, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Quick Silver i feel confident you can forget about the insect people. Ant Man will only get LESS people to go see the movie. Not more. Anyone who wants ant-man is going to see the avengers 2 no matter what because they are fans. But the mainstream audience who just went to go see it because it was the cool, hip thing to do might get turned off by a few ants fighting alongside gods and monsters.

I challenge anyone to lay out a scene that makes sense in which ant-man not only looks cool but is only equal grounds with Thor and Hulk.

Put hank in the movie, but not as Ant-Man, as Giant man. He's scientist who makes formulas that can make you grow tall or shrink down. He takes the growth formula and gives his wife the shrink formula and shield provides her with miniaturized weapons that she can wear and a flying apparatus that would give us the feel of the wasp. Boom. Best of both worlds with no lame insects. No audience member with common sense will ever think things they used to dominate as small children could ever pose a threat.

and dude im totally down for Ultron to be villain in something BEFORE Avengers (it worked for Loki) and im totaly down for Hank Pym to have his own movie. because i agree - Ultron rising up to power takes a major toll on Hank and it's a good journey to explore. I however
(might be committing fan blasphemy)would have no issue if they switch it over to Stark's biggest failure, sending him on a downward spiral that takes queues from Demon In A Bottle.

i do think they should detour from Thanos/Cosmic for Avengers 2. i do think they should use Ultron and the epilogue scene could be back in space with The Other saying Thanos, who sits proudly on his throne "The Ultron threat has been eliminated. proceed with the annihilation."

CBMM1@ ok i buy it. you see things i just can't when it comes to ant-man. but then my argument is - i just don't think thats worth taking away screen time from the other heroes we could be seeing instead.

valid? not valid?

OdinsBeard - 5/17/2012, 3:58 PM
and just a personal prefernce CBMM, i'd rather see him as giant man. SOME of that stuff you mentioned could be done by my version of The Wasp that i laid out.

OdinsBeard - 5/17/2012, 4:01 PM
brazilianbatman@ so then he's as big as the hulk? cuz thats about how big the frost giants were. and i just don't see that working either. we already have someone of that size on the team. why add another, weaker charcter like that with essentially no powers? if he's not absolutey HUGE then Hulk makes him irrelevant.

No apologies necessary Odinsbeard, I make these to get people talking. Any input (as long as it serves some purpose) is welcome. And maybe Ultrons psyche could be Pyms biggest failure, and Stark loads him up with weapons beforehand and is partly responsible for the destruction as well. I'm not sure. Egghead seems to cheesy, but Klaw would be the best bet. Sets up Black Panther too with both of them being interested in vibranium. I just REALLY want to see as much Ultron as I can. He is my favorite villain, after Thanos of course.

Personally, I think people don't give Pym's shrinking power enough credit. Mainly because it's really easy for writers to handle them poorly. However, with a little creativity, they could be used to great effect. In fact, I'd actually written a thing in the fan fiction section roughly a year or so ago (a short film script, intent on briefly establishing Ant-Man before The Avengers) that involved basically what Thanos005 suggested -- Ultron goes active in Pym's lab aboard the helicarrier, and Pym shrinks to climb inside and tear out its CPU.)

I do feel that introducing Ultron as the main villain in an Ant-Man solo film would be a bit much. But I think that if he's handled in the way that Loki was (i.e. As a character in a solo film who, towards the end, starts to become a villain, and then returns to face the Avengers once he's become an even bigger threat), it could work.

Also, on a side-note, I feel like Giant Man should be introduced in The Avengers sequel, not in his solo film. Imagine, if you will, Ultron going crazy, and the Avengers trying to contain him. Hank shows up to try and help, based on the fact that he built Ultron, and understands him better than anyone. The team is a bit hesitant to let him help in the actual fighting, because they don't see how the shrinking power he's famous for will help all that much. Through the course of the film, characters keep referring to him as "Ant-Man", and he keeps asking them to call him something else, be it "Hank", or "Doctor Pym", or what have you... just, directing them away from the term "Ant-Man". Then, towards the beginning of the climactic battle sequence, BAM, we get our sequel's "Hulk moment" (I'm, of course, referring to a moment that equals the sheer awesomeness of Bruce's second transformation, during the battle in the city) when Pym turns to team and says something to the effect of "There's a reason I asked you to stop calling me 'Ant-Man'." At which point, he activates his Pym particle belt-thing, and becomes a giant for the first time on-screen.

You've totally convinced me that Ultron is an essential choice for antagonist. Like you said, it worked with Loki. Avengers Assemble 2 will, more than likely, include Ultron. Phase 2 of the MCU starts off with nanotech-centric Iron Man 3, so I feel that this next step after "avenging Phil Coulson"-- is exploring cyborgs (aka resurrection?). Ultron will evolve, as Loki did, into an even more menacing force. And he doesn't have to die. They could use him over and over again in other movies like they're doing with Loki.

I say establish Ultron as Pym's partner ala Jarvis that way when he turs in Avengers 2 it has meaning.

Also I say the villain should be a "champagne villain" like beloch from Raiders or even Jstin Hammer more of a suave corporate threat maybe with some muscle as a side villain like the nazs from raiders... jus make everything like raiders of the lost ark lol

I hope Pym turns into Yellowjacket by the time Avengers 2 rolls around. But as for a villain I'd say Erik Josten A.K.A. Atlas, with Ultron having a cameo at the end.

No desire at all to see ant man or giant man on screen. Period. I have no doubt they could make it awesome i have no desire to see it. What i think would like is pym, and stark build ultron, use him to help defeat thanos and then ultron turns bad. Maybe after that pym can become gyant man to help fight thanos or ant man to crawl inside of thanos. Eh. Itll be cool but not exciting.

Ant Man Rogues Gallery:

- Ultron

- Egghead

- Klaw (though he's only been his foe in A:EMH, more a Black Panther villain)

- Monica Rppacini (brings in A.I.M)

- Mitch Carson (Eric O' Grady villain)

- Atlas (More an Avengers' foe, but has identical powers so...)

- A.I.M

- Alkhema (She-Ultron essentially)

- Whirlwind (notable for his Wasp obsession)

- Black Knight

- Colossus

- Dr. Nemesis

- Comrade X

- Voice

- Porcupine

Here we are, though as you can tell Ant Man doesn't have the most impressive rogues gallery...

For everyone saying Ant-Man is lame....

If you're lacking in the imagination department, I guess I could see where you'd think that. A man who can talk to ants and shrink to half the size of one doesn't seem like much. But if that's all you're seeing, then I am really thankful you aren't working for Marvel.

Hank Pym created his "Pym Particles". They shrink things, not just himself. In his debut comic, he made a pitch (which actually sounds really cool especially today) to offer the American Army a way to transport soldiers and supplies a million times more effectively by shrinking it all down to size for increased storage capacity. This only skimmed the surface, but his scientific community scoffed at the idea.

The trouble is, when people think of Ant-man, they are so hung up on the fact that his "powers" make him super small and that he can communicate with ants, and by itself, that would seem like he'd only be an ok asset to the Avengers (yes, we're looking at things in terms of assets, not how interesting the character could be) for the potential reconnaissance abilities he can offer.

Giant Man wouldn't get very far... can we say property damage? Who's paying for that?
OdinsBeard
OdinsBeard - 5/18/2012, 10:56 AM
Tainted87@ :( i do too have an imagination! lol. (Real quick - property damage?? who's paying? Disney. Stark. Asgard. It’s movie! lol i don't care about that! I want to see carnage! That’s why we go to the movies. To be able to escape and watch things and not care how many lawsuits will come out of it.) I don't dislike the fact that he can turn small but i do look down on the whole "communication with insects" a la aqua man with sea creatures. I'm all about the character of Hank Pym, think he's great. If you want to shrink him small go for it. MY problem with that is that he's not Captain America. He’s not black widow or Hawkeye. He’s not a soldier or a trained fighter. He’s a scientist. So he still maintains his human strength as an ant-size man right? So what's he going to do? Punch something in the face? You all saw Batman Returns, right? "Hey two-face! Show me how to punch a guy!" - That’s how i see that going. Thankful I’m not working for marvel? Then why didn't marvel put ant-man and wasp in the avengers? Because they know as well as i do that it's very hard to get a mainstream audience to accept that along with all of the other things they're asking them to accept. It could have been just as easy to do a Pym cameo over Hawkeye in Thor but they didn't take that route for a reason.

sikwon@ exactly. It all just comes down to personal preference.

CBMM@ agreed. People DID make that same argument for Hawkeye and Widow. Honestly tho i was not one of those people so that’s all i can say on that. They're trained killers as opposed to Pym being a scientist. Plus an archer is such a cool symbol/archetype. It always has been. which is why i argue for Giant Man over Ant Man. it just seems so much more classic to me, giants have always been cool and always been part of tall tales and fables. Giants, Gods, Monsters, Soldiers, Knights, Kings, Aliens, Sorcerers **(= Giant Man [big IF], Thor, Loki, Cap, Hawkeye, Widow, Iron Man, Thor, Black Panther [IF], Captain Marvel [IF], Chitauri, Thanos, Doc Strange [IF])** are all just cool symbols to me that belong in stories like this. Throw in a Pixie/Fairy (=The Wasp) and you've got all of these classic archetypes in this modern day setting, a setting that, TO ME, doesn't fit in with insect culture. Maybe I’m missing something... which i'll be happy to concede as you know. And yeah you can't do Hank without Janet. If you have one you've got to have both! Which is, in my opinion, actually the best way to do it, you get the visuals of the small and big in the same movie.

Marknjoanna@ Black Panther!! haha. But yeah even Doc Strange over Ant Man

Brazilianbatman@ BIGGER!! haha. I think we'll just have to agree to disagree. Because i do want him Godzilla sized. I don't think we've had something like that in a movie for a while. And i only said 40 feet. Which is realistically only 4 stories tall, meaning he wouldn't really be towering over any of the buildings we saw in avengers so imho i think it could work.

Thanos005@ yeah there should absolutely be some connection between Ultron and Wakanda's Vibrainium. Whether it’s through hank or klaw or just ultron trying to get it himself.

TheMyth
TheMyth - 5/18/2012, 9:19 PM
I'm very much agreeing with OdinsBeard here. I am absolutely DREADING Ant-Man because of the insect crap. He is useless and entirely off-putting with the ants. The shrinking is fine, matter of fact I think him being able to go from 50ft. to 1 inch would be great rather than just doing one or the other. Use the Pym Particles and all the cool stuff that goes with the science behind them because THAT is the coolness behind Hank Pym, not [frick]ing ants. Wasp, however, just sucks. All she has ever really done is die and get slapped around by Hank. I've read so many comics that I forget things, but I seriously cannot remember anything significant she has ever done. If Marvel wants more strong female characters, the should start with Carol Danvers and Scarlet Witch to put with Widow, not lame ass Janet Van Dyne. The Pyms could be devastating to the MCU if they aren't done just right, and I'm not so sure we need both of them anyway.

Tainted87, Dude, saying people have a lack of imagination because they think a certain character is lame isn't really fair is it? Couldn't the same be just as easily said for you, or do you just adore all comic characters? I don't like Superman or Silver Surfer much, it doesn't mean I lack imagination, it simply means that those characters don't appeal to me. And don't assume just because someone doesn't like a character, they must not know anything about them. I've read countless books over nearly 25 years, and I've always thought, "Man, Wasp [frick]ing sucks, I wish she'd just go away forever. Quit wasting ink already." I clapped at the end of Secret Invasion.

Save Ultron. If they pull off Ant-Man, then Ultron could be an absolutely spectacular story for an Avengers film. Do the building of Ultron and Vision like in the Ultimates, Pym built them both at the same time, but base the rest on the 616 Ultron and Vision, with Coulson taking the place of Williams. Have them be something commissioned by SHIELD as insurance should the Avengers go rogue. Avengers find out from Pym, they tell Fury off, whip Ultron in a last desperate gambit(I like the idea of the Ant-Man taking him out internally), ends with Avengers separating themselves from SHIELD. That's a good nutshell for what I think would be a cool Avengers flic with Ultron, plus it fits the "smaller, more personal" plot we've heard whispered.

I think AIM would be good. It could be simple too. Don't try to over complicate an Ant-Man movie, it'll be a tough pill to swallow as it is. Use Atlas as AIM's test subject after they steal the research for Pym Particles... or something, I dunno, I don't write movies. Simple and no insects is the way to go

This isnt that hard. I dont know Ant-mans villian roster well, but its simple. AIM is getting introduced in IM3 we already know.
