BOX OFFICE: AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON To Stay At #1 This Weekend As It Nears $700M WW

Despite there being a handful of new releases this weekend, Avengers: Age of Ultron looks set to remain #1 at the North American box office. Meanwhile, we also have an update on the worldwide performance of Joss Whedon's sequel, and it's closing in on yet another landmark figure...

It's Mother's Day weekend in North America this weekend, so take your mom to see Avengers: Age of Ultron! In fact, it sounds like that's exactly what is going to happen, as box office analysts are predicting an impressive haul of around $85 million this weekend. As per usual, that's just an educated guess at this point, but it will be interesting to see if the sequel exceeds expectations after taking a dent last weekend because of a variety of sporting events.  It reached the $200 million mark after just four days, beaten only by The Avengers which achieved that feat in three.

Avengers: Age of Ultron faces competition from Hot Pursuit, the action comedy which stars Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara. Reviews have been brutal though, so word of mouth won't help that one and it probably won't make any sort of dent. There are a few other small releases (Maggie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger will get a limited run), but the sequel is free and clear until Mad Max: Fury Road comes out next week. As of right now, the movie's domestic total is $217.6 million, and with $478.2 million from overseas, it has a worldwide total of $695.9 million.

Did you ever think, that maybe, JUST maybe, they'll be adding more to the team between now and 2019?

Superman hasn't been a big moneymaker in the past decade. Who cares? Both Spider-Man and Batman outsell him. As seen with the Avengers, it just takes one thing to turn that all around. Superman can come back on top eventually. Whether that's next year, or ten years from now, it can happen. But really, who cares? Any comic movie being this successful is a win-win for all included parties. DC will step it up. Competition is a very good thing.

I don't think the roster will really matter once the Infinity War films get here.

I was REALLY disappointed in Age Of Ultron. But it's making money, and in a industry where $$$$ is ALL that matters. And quality is the least important thing... it is what it is.

@DoubleD

That depends if AOU can hit $500M domestic and make more than a billion internationally. I don't see it happening though.

Why do people have to bring up MoS all the time, its so [frick]ing annoying. This article has nothing to do with it or DC. MoS was not a failure. If making 668+ million at the box office is a failure than 6 out 11 MCU movies were a failure(which i don't think they are).

Either way this movie was good and it will make loads of more money.

@KurtWagner1225 I hear Mad Max is better than The Avengers. And is arguably is the movie to beat this summer. At least that's what the critic's say.

In all honesty, this could make or be close to $500 M by the end of May
