BOX OFFICE: Will AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Earn As Much As THE AVENGERS?

We've rounded up a bunch of fascinating facts about the expected box office performance of the sequel to the biggest superhero movie of all-time, so hit the jump for all the latest on Avengers: Age of Ultron. We also have answer to the question everyone's asking: will it top The Avengers?

By JoshWilding - May 03, 2015 12:05 PM EST
Avengers: Age of Ultron has rocketed past the $600 million mark worldwide (details here), but the fact that it opened slightly lower than the first movie in North America this weekend means it's a flop, right? Wrong. Even with a budget of $280 million, the sequel has already made a lot of money, and Marvel Studios' success shows no sign of slowing down. So, who went to see the movie? Well, 59% of the audience domestically were male, and 59% of those who gave it a watch were 26+. It also received an A CinemaScore. The Avengers received A+. That doesn't tell us a lot, but might be useful information next time someone dismisses the superhero genre as being for kids.

Currently 10% behind The Avengers in terms of earnings in North America, Avengers: Age of Ultron still took an amazing 82% of the overall box office this weekend. Box office analysts believe that it may end up finishing 25 - 30% lower domestically than its predecessor, but the US really isn't all that important these days, at least not as much as it once was anyway. It's thought that Avengers: Age of Ultron will shoot past the $1 billion mark overseas, and it currently seems likely that it WILL reach the same number (around $1.5 billion) as The Avengers. It's going to be big, and even if the sequel doesn't end up topping what's come before, no way will Marvel be unhappy with this result.

As of right now, Disney, Marvel, and Robert Downey Jr. all have the three highest US opening weekends of all-time. Those are The Avengers ($207.4 million), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($187.7 million), and Iron Man 3 ($174.1 million). Many thanks to Exhibitor Relations and Gitesh Pandya for these figures. How many times did you guys decide to watch the sequel over the weekend?

"Even with a budget of $280 million"

where did you get that number everywhere else has been saying it's 250 million budget.

LastOfKrypton - 5/3/2015, 12:56 PM
No.
It will make around $1,4 billion at the world-wide box office.
Star Wars will be the highest grossing film of the year.

It'll probably have a strong second weekend. The fight really took away a large percentage of viewers who would've been watching this movie Saturday evening.

ok so it's tracking lower......to date......domestically than Avengers.... But does anybody know if it's tracking lower to date, globally, than Avengers in the same timeframe? I can't seem to find that comparison on Box oFfice Mojo.

I'm going to watch it but then demand my money back to maintain neutrality.

Avenger had a lot of lets after opening weekend. I'm not so sure about Age of Ultron. It will make lots of money but likely not beating the first or Fast7.

I guess it all depends how they do in China.

I'd be surprised if it didn't; there's hardly any comparable competition at the moment (In terms of the box office) so it can get there.

The reason it didn't make as much on the weekend is because over half of America decided they liked boxing all of a sudden

Yes.

Worldwide Yes - it's already beating the 1st Avengers in that category without even China opening yet.

Domestically US though it won't.

Why is anyone even questioning if this movie is going to be a flop financially??????

Anyways the movie was good not great......I enjoyed it very much but there were issues with it. That being said I am sure this movie will do 1.8 billion but sad to say it will not topple Avatar!

@KurtWagner1225

I think Pitch Perfect 2 will affect AOU's box office more than Mad Max. As awesome as that movie looks, I don't see it grossing a lot of money.

So what I gathered is that this movie should hit 4 bill by next weekend? Cool :D

But keep in mind if this movie only matches the first avengers outing than I would start to question.........I guess we will wait to see what happens with this and than Ant man.

It's funny to read some people blaming this on the boxing match... i Went to watch the fight at 9pm and left the bar at 12pm. If people wanted they could had watch AOU and still make the fight. 50 million is a big gape to over come simply due to a few hours of boxing...

If they released it in America on the same date as Europe then yeah. But given piracy anD early online reviews with spoilers, those that were on the fence about paying to see it miget have been swayed away.

@Ramiel

Actually Pitch Perfect 2 can and will have an effect, that movie will draw in all the teenie boppers..........

Either way I stand firm on 1.8 billion!

Current BO forecast says it's still on pace to do about $1.7 billion worldwide.

Since foreign markets profit =/= domestic profit for Disney, I really doubt it. Beside that this could be the first Marvel sequel that made less than his predecessor, and that never happen with any Marvel Studios movies until now, hope it make more than Avengers 1, but looks unlikely.

"We also have answer to the question everyone's asking: will it top The Avengers?"

Who cares? People will spend money on something great as much as they'll spend money on something that's crap like Avatar.
Demiurge

I'm going to say YES. It will be big in China.
If not, then it'll be shy of the threshold by 50-100 mil.

@kalelhawj

I agree the boxing match is not a great excuse......I live in New Mexico and we are die hard fans for boxing and MMA.....yet my son said the theater he works at was very busy as usual with all the teenagers and young adults.

If the boxing match was really a factor than I would think it would pick up today since it is Sunday.

And people do not give me the excuse that people are strapped for cash after the fight. My friends rent it and we all gather together and chip in..........
