Joss Whedon On Crafting Captain America's "AVENGERS ---" Line

Chris Evans almost managed to voice a longtime Avengers tradition in Age of Ultron before the credits were ushered in. Here's Joss Whedon sharing on how he crafted that particular aspect of our first look at the new [Spoiler]. Warning: Major Spoilers will be discussed after the jump.

Longtime comic book readers had a brief moment in the closing minutes of Avengers: Age of Ultron where it seemed that  a feverent wish was about to be granted.  As the New Avengers team gathered, Chris Evans' Captain America was just about to let out the longtime Avengers battlecry, "Avengers Assemble" before the movie faded to black.  Director Joss Whedon has disclsoed to Empire Magazine's Spoiler Podcast that Cap was never going to get out a full battlecry

"I made sure that we never shot Chris Evans saying [the 'assemble!' of 'Avengers assemble!'] I was positive that some executive was gonna go, 'You forgot to put in the last word!' I was like, 'With my dying breath...' I don’t have to say that a lot, but sometimes I’ll turn to [Marvel head honcho] Kevin [Feige] and say, 'With my dying breath...'

As much as I was like, 'We didn’t get this, we didn’t get this, this is sloppy, and I’m not happy with that music cue...' With all my complaints, it was in the script exactly as you see it. 'He draws breath to say the next word. Blackout.' So to know that we landed exactly where I wanted to go, however many stumbles along the way, was extremely gratifying. As was Chris Evans’ reaction when I told him what we were going to do in the second movie, at the MTV movie awards, when we won for the first movie – he lost his s***. (Laughs) It was great."

Perhaps in the next Avengers film, or possibly even in Captain America: Civil War we'll get to hear Cap say the battlecry? Maybe Civil War ends with Cap at a press conference [a la the first Iron Man] struggling to address the media regarding the inevitalbe mayhem and destructon that just unfolded in Civil War and then he stops, realizes what his next move needs to be and then looks directly into the camera and deadpans "Avengers Assemble"? Hey, a fan can dream!

Avengers: Age of Ultron is currently playing in theaters.  Written and directed by Joss Whedon, the film stars Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, James Spader, Jeremy Renner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Cobie Smulder, Samuel L. Jackson, Paul Bettany and Don Cheadle.

Oh well, would have loved it if we had actually gotten to see the Kooky quartet assembled properly

I was hoping to hear the Avengers battle cry in this sequel. Maybe in Cap 3

Kinda put the spoiler in the title....defeats the purpose of the spoiler warning. Lol

Feel this was one of the reasons i left the film with a taste of disappointment, which made me consider that while the movie was good, it wasnt fulfilling. If it hadnt have been for the lack of the 'Assemble' at the end then i would'nt have looked back on the film with such a critical eye.

The lack of the full battle cry is like a lack of commitment to the film in my view, its not funny for the fans and it feels unfinished to those watching the film as casual viewers.

@Christuffer
The [spoiler] refers to the new team, which the title doesn't give away.

I don't get the joke. Why leave out assemble? I'm still waiting for Thor to say, "For Asgard!" I'm surprised that Hulk was able to say, "Hulk smash!" in TIH. He has yet to say it since.

That was actually the first time in my life I've ever uddered the words "[frick] you Joss Whedon...but well done dickhead"

Mark,

A good article. I really liked the choice to cut at that moment in the film.

NB: I think the word that you are after is "fervent."

Really wished Thor said some variation of "Ultron, we would have words with thee"

With all the joking around that Thor did, it would have been great for at least that little bit of fan service for his character. But nope, we had to watch him crack-wise as he was being choked.

LOL! Someone yelled out "Oh f*ck you Whedon!" at the theater I went to too.

"Avengers Assemble!" has to be dramatic. Him walking into the room when the movie is closing is kinda "yawn." Save it for IW pt2. When Cap calls on all Avengers past and present to arms against Thanos while he's on the battlefield.

Its a build up though. Jesus let them sprinkle the good bits over the course of the films not prematurely ejaculate every quip, money shot, and spectacle in 1-2 films....let it simmer and season and after Cap is killed (guessing) in Civil War and then resurrected in Infinity War part 1 at the very end leading into part 2 Cap is resurected via karate magic or whatever, than he finally [frick]ing says it and it's glorious and everyone [frick]ing cheers and cries and goes home [frick]ing stoked for part 2. At least that's what I'd do.

I hope it becomes a running joke that they don't say "avengers assemble" through the rest of the movies only to finally use it in Infinity War. I felt like that's what Whedon was doing because aside from the last scene there's a point in Age of Ultron where Tony says "Avengers, time to work for a living."

Yeah, just save it for when all the resurrected Avengers come back to fight Thanos at the end of IW 2.

I would have liked it actually said. Cutting the last word just hammered home for me how much the whole movie pulled back and seemed afraid of true greatness.

I've been very tolerant of Whedon's place in the MCU, even excusing a lot of the things I didn't care for in the first movie, but how Age of Ultron turned out makes me glad he's not coming back for Infinity War.

Maybe his 3 hour cut is amazing and it's all Feige's fault, but I cut Whedon the same slack I cut Raimi for Spider-Man 3, which is basically none. Working within the constraints of the producers/studio is part of a director's job, too. (Not that AoU is anywhere near SM3 or anything. Just talking philosophically.)

When He was about to say it my friend and I sat up straight with hope in our eyes. We were waiting for it. Then the scene cut and I yelled out " GAHDAMMIT!" I wasn't pissed off. I got the joke. I think it will have more power when he finally does say it.

@Amazing512- that would be perfect! I'm gonna cry actual tears when IW drops. Seeing them all fight and interact with each other to take down Thanos...

I wonder if they're gonna kill Cap at the end of Civil war, I know he goes to jail in the story right? Or will they kill him in IWpt1 to bring him and all the other dead heros in pt 2. They're bringing Agent 13 back. Isn't she the one that kills Cap?
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 5/7/2015, 7:03 AM
On the other hand, if Cap had said: "Avengers..." breath "...Congregate!" and then Widow gives him a weird look, and Cap shrugs and says: "We'll work on the catchphrase..." or something...

Then, it's at least a joke, rather than just a pointless tease.

@Scarilian

Exactly my feeling.
