Joss Whedon Rules Out The Possibility Of An AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Director's Cut

Still waiting on that Avengers: Age Of Ultron Director's Cut from Joss Whedon? Sadly, we may be waiting for quite some time. The director claimed he has no plans to work on an extended version any time soon - but he did promise plenty of new scenes in the DVD extras!

Joss Whedon's original cut of Avengers: Age Of Ultron clocked in at almost three-and-a-half hours long. Given how many scenes had to be removed for the final version, many fans have wondered about the possibility of a Director's Cut. Indeed, while the Marvel blockbuster was, on the whole, warmly received by audiences, one common criticism it received was over how rushed it felt at times - a problem that a lengthier version would surely rectify.

Sadly, this vision may never be realized. Speaking at the Nerd HQ panel at Comic-Con this weekend, Whedon unfortunately
ruled out the possibility of an Avengers: Age Of Ultron Director's Cut in the near future - citing his reluctance to constantly meddle with something when it's done (along with his own personal laziness). He did, however, tease plenty of extras in the DVD release. You can read his comments in full below, courtesy of Collider.

"It has always been my ambition never to do a director’s cut of anything, and always to make the movie with the studio that we both want to make. Ultron was very complex. There was a lot of back-and-forth. My instinct is no. Just as an artist, I’m super f*king lazy and that sounds like it would be hard. I don’t think there’s interest in it, right now. You’ll see a bunch of stuff on the DVD in extras that were meant to be there. But the narrative came together very close to the way that I hoped it would, and I don’t think it needs me to constantly tweak it. I feel you put something out, and there it is."

"The first time I ever heard a re-mix, I was 13 and I was listening to the radio. I heard a song that had been re-mixed and it freaked me out so much that I turned off the radio and never listened to it since, literally. That is an actual truth. I felt like, “Wait, that was the song. You can’t do that.” Our entire culture consists of doing exactly that, but I’m not for it. If I tell a story, I want that to be the story I told. Ultron may have some transitions that I’m not 100% on board with. It’s also one of the most ridiculously personal things I’ve ever put on screen. The fact that Marvel gave me that opportunity and supported it, I’m very happy and very proud of everybody that worked on it. I don’t feel the need to go in and fix. I feel like, there she is."

Disappointing, huh? However, given how much this film is said to have worn Whedon down during production, it's hardly surprising he's unwilling to revisit it just yet. Maybe in a few years? What are your thoughts? Are you interested in seeing an Age Of Ultron Director's Cut, or are you happy with the movie as it is? You can check out the entire Nerd HQ panel below, and be sure to leave us your thoughts in the comments!

His rabble about remixes makes me roll my eyes a bit, but I do get the gist of what he's saying.

This is gonna be like The Amazing Spiderman 1 & 2, where we had a ton of deleted scenes and alternate scenes on the dvd. I fully expect a 3 or 4 deleted scenes devoted to the Thor subplot and 5 scenes devoted to the twins

His remix statement makes no sense.

Yeah like the time P.Diddy decided to sing on top of another song made by Led Zepplin.....horrific.

So now that he has said his piece can we drop the whole "MARVEL SCREWED OVER JOSS WHEDON, PUPPET DIRECTORS, THEY ONLY WANT YESMEN" bs that some people have been spewing?

It was Avengers 1.5.

More of the same...

It was good but far from breaking new ground, to be honest I'm far more excited about the origin stories of Ant-Man, Dr Strange and Black Panther up on screen.
I'll pick up Age of Ultron when it's dropped in price a little like the first Avengers film now has as I'm in no real rush to see it again soon.

Yeah, I get what he's saying but Whedon still sounds exhausted. He needs a break

And, technically, he "remixed" Ultron

it's cool, I am sure someone will edit all the deleted scenes in to a makeshift extended cut, and then torrent that shiz.

AOU was good movie, lot of great stuff and scenes in it. I missed only couple of things, like Thor dream sequence extended, Stark more emotional with Ultron and more of that Prime vs Thor fight ;)

People are so difficult to entertain today and they have so many expectations and many dont even know what they want from the movie.

On to the next one Marvel and stay focus with the Quality!

No Director's cut would have fixed what we got out of the goofy Ultron.

Too bad, would've loved to see how Joss wanted it cut. Probably just adds a little more to the MCUniverse not the AOU story.

Never got the Ultron complaints tbh. I think that Ultron knew he wasn't formidable enough to face the Avengers. That's one of his reasons for the creation of Vision. Thing is though (having watched the film a couple of times), Ultron isn't really about matching the Avengers. Its all about this end game. He knows the Avengers were going to be an obstacle, hence he recruited the twins. That scene in Klaws ship where he had planned with Wanda to get in their heads proved this. Whileat Wanda and Pietro attacked them, he was transporting the vibraniun back to his bass.Basically, the twins served as a distraction whilst Ultron completed his plans. He was more into the bigger picture.

His end game was far more important and he was doing what he was programmed to do. He has hatred for the Avengers no doubt, he basically says it when Thor calls him out," This is all I've ever wanted. All of you against all of me." He was cocky and arrogant. He waited for the Avengers to show up so that he could beat them with his sheer numbers. Yeah, I had mixed feelings about him at first but he was a great villain. Needed more screentime. Spader killed it.

What I found most interesting about Ultron was how he called the Avengers on their ********. I mean the whole party scene he pretty Much calls them killers and unworthy which was very interesting considering the final act of the film is all about being worthy. Cap said it as they prepare for the battle that Ultron thinks they're monsters. He wants to prove that he can better than all of them. At the same time he acted like a rebellious teenager with father issues. An angry child. I mean his endgame and metaphors were all associated with kids stuff like Pinocchio and the whole thing dinosaurs and meteors. I do get the complaints but one criticism I don't agree with is "he wasn't a threat" when really his journey in the film isn't really about being menacing and threatening. Just because he wasn't wiping out people left and right doesn't mean he's not a threat. His endgame was pretty much scary if you think about it.

What?! The promise of extended cuts is what got me through all 6 ruthlessly edited LOTR/Hobbit movies.

wtf the constant hating of Age Of Ultron confuses me as much as the hate for Man Of Steel (I really like both films). I get not loving it, thinking it's sub-par etc. But the absolute statements like "it was complete and utter garbage" etc are ridiculous. I genuinely don't understand how someone could have watched it and not had fun.
MrSnrub
MrSnrub - 7/14/2015, 5:56 AM
honestly, maybe he genuinely doesn't want to revisit AoU. That's totally his choice and not devoting his own time and energy into something he just doesn't care for is understandable.
