Mark Ruffalo: AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Sets Up 'New Ground' For HULK/Banner Relationship

Seemingly adding credibility to recent spoilers regarding the character's fate in The Avengers sequel, Mark Ruffalo reiterates what's needed for the Incredible Hulk to go solo again, and more.

While still making rounds for his new film, Begin Again, Mark Ruffalo also talked with Indiewire about his return to Bruce Banner/Incredible Hulk in next year's Avengers: Age of Ultron, and where he'd like to take the character afterwards. Possibly confirming recent rumors that indicate where the Jade Giant will likely end up before The Avengers 3, Ruffalo was asked if he was dying to do a new standalone film. The actor also says he wants to be the "leading edge" of motion-capture.

"If we could find a story that's compelling enough to hold people's interest for the two hours -- that is essential," he reiterated. "It's a tough nut to crack and I see it as a tough nut to crack. I think it's tougher than the other superheroes because you have a guy who essentially doesn't want to be there doing the thing that you want him to do more than anything. So it can be frustrating as an audience member. It could become a little mirthless. I think that Joss [Whedon] is trying to set it up enough so that we can strike out new ground on that relationship. With the new technology there's a lot to do in Hulk-land that we haven't done yet that is really exciting. So you could have a balance of the two. And I've been finding this relationship between Banner and the Hulk and Hulk and Banner is equally compelling -- it's been explored in the comics, but never in the movies. It's always been Banner's relationship to this sort of lump, this unknowable very two-dimensional thing. But there's also something really interesting about Hulk's relationship with Banner. The only thing that scares Hulk is Banner. It's not some bigger, scarier, huger thing -- it's this frail man. And it terrifies him and it angers him. It's such an interesting relationship that no one has cracked. I feel like that would be an interesting place for us to go. That might hold people's attention." Be sure to read the full interview with Mark Ruffalo over at Indiewire where he talks mo-cap. What do you think?

Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Cobie Smulders Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, with Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, and James Spader. The film is set for release on May 1, 2015.

Marvel Studios does not have enough faith in a Solo Hulk movie, even though all the fans want it after that awesome performance in The Avengers.

No to Planet Hulk or WWH! There are other stories you could adapt from Stan Lee's run, Bill Mantlo, Peter David's run, or even Dogs Of War.

I'm content with the Hulk just being a supporting character in ensemble movies.

The reason the only Hulk story arcs people mention are Planet Hulk and World War Hulk are because they're the only interesting Hulk ones. He's just not interesting.

@ Maxi

LMAO!!!!! Hate to say it but Batman fixes everything..........

But I have to agree with blackandyellow Hulk is not very exciting, and I would have to say that about Superman as well before MOS was released.

One of my favorite Banner moments in the comics that I can remember is where Abomination was trashing a town and Bruce parked on the outskirts, changed into his xxxl pants, and just walkedinto town holding the pants cinched in a fist. Just awesome.

We need to ad Spidey to the mix and we are all good.

Wonder why they don't touch on Banners fractured psyche due to child abuse...

Having Banner work for SHIELD (b4 it ended) would have been the perfect formula for a 3rd solo Hulk flick.

Does anyone know if Marvel Studios have the full rights back to Hulk or are they shared?

I want a Hulk film just as much as everyone else, but if such a move is announced for Phase Three, the people that are currently calling Marvel dumb for not giving him one (until that point in time) will reignite the "where's my Black Panther/Ms. Marvel/Inhumans movie" crap. Or they'll go on with the "took them long enough" bs.

Then if Black Panther is announced

I really really want a BP movie but I am not sure if Marvel Studios has faith in that character carrying a whole movie without another supporting characters like IronMan etc........

@ Soto

If Marvel does not announce a BP at SDCC then I am certain he will just become another side kick in the MCU like War Machine and Falcon.

Well at least at this point Marvel is doing better than Lucas ever did with black characters........

SW- Mace and Lando

MCU - Nick Fury, War Machine, and Falcon.
